This episode follows us as we attend two call out jobs around London.
The first job involves faulty hob in East London. We arrived to discover that the savy customer had isolated the fault, we were able to test the circuit and establish the cause of the fault.
The second job involved a loss of power in Kensington. The customer complained that they heard crackling throughout the property. We went in to investigate and the job took an unexpected turn.
Enjoy.

It's alot different here in the states , were 120 volt 1 phase for residential dwellings , and our panels are much larger , but the same principle I see process of elimination , start at begening work your way back and can't go wrong !!!!!

If one has to run an insulation resistance test in a property in which it is difficult to remove all appliances or sensitive fittings will it be sufficient to do the test on 250v and not cause any damage? Thanks

Most likely the problem may have been that some water had gone down to the cooker somewhere. The good man should have just opened up the cooker to see if that was the case.

The second job has a consumer unit and meter with cables that could quite easily be pulled on by children, knocked when carrying something up those stairs behind them... whatever. To top it all off there's no isolation between incoming electric and meter (which should have been done when the smart meter was fitted)... This type of installation is surely against regulations and the whole CU and meter should be at least boxed in for safety... My guess would be that someone has come in through the front door drunk gone to hang their coat up and steadied themselves using that neutral cable LOL.... very dangerous as it could have been the live.
@5tevia
@5tevia 5 лет назад
Main isolation or DNO cut out could be located in another room. There is no regulation to say it needs to be by the meter.

Lose the neutral and usually lose all the electronic stuff in the house. Neutral pulled out due to smart meter install and meter installer pulling on tails and not checking the main switch in the consumer unit after install. Common problem always check after meter fitters have been in the house. Enjoying your videos Delroy.

Sorry Delroy. I don’t understand your fault finding logic on the first job. It’s a cooker radial circuit with only two appliances on it, they are much more likely to fail than the MCB, wiring or switch. Disconnect the hob and cooker then IR test from there back to the CU, proves the switch and wiring - wouldn’t have shown a fault, hence it must be an appliance, re-connect cooker which would have been fine, same with hob, fault repeats. So it’s the hob, disconnect at the backplate so that a new hob can simply be wired in. Not being funny but am I missing something?
@TheDeathBonus

Wouldnt the neon on the cooker switch affect the IR values?

Fantastic video gents. Well presented. However, can I just ask a question on 2391 inspection and testing. I’m about to sit my 2391 in a months time and wanted to install a rig testing board before the exam but not sure how many circuits i should include to make sure I’m well prepared for the exam. If you can possibly help me with a spec I would much appreciate your help!

Meter installer should have cleated tails before working on the meter, however I would say dodgy electrician was to blame, as looks like the neutral was never connected properly. Could definitely of caused afire that one.

You should definitely have isolated the load before working on that - apart from sparks as you put it back, bear in mind that the load side neutral would actually have been live while the neutral supply was disconnected.
@taianwar89
@taianwar89 5 лет назад
Great job Delroy but a few pointers mate, the second consumer Unit one has a multitude of issues/ No labeling, no RCD protection, old fusewire MCB's, meter tails need upgrading to 22mm, should have a 100a isolator between the meter leading to the DB and that's just what I can tell from looking at the DB who knows what the circuits are like in the rest of the property. I would have told the customer that the immediate fault has been resolved but she seriously needs to consider taking care of these other things here and would have given here a recommendation with an estimate to have this work done. Also, why not offer to replace the old double socket frontal while you were there? could have billed a bit more and have resolved another issue.

It must suck to work on a consumer unit located in such location. Is there any requirement that dictates location of a consumer unit? US and Canada has a requirement for a working space in front of consumer unit/electrical panel that has to be free of any obstruction. I believe it is 3 feet of available space from unit cover. Other than that, good job guys.
