In 1992 I was in St Petersburg for a few months. It wasn't easy finding fresh food -- you had to know people who knew people, and I didn't. Went to Moscow for 2 weeks, and believe me, the new Moscow Pizza Hut was manna from heaven. They had a salad bar... with FRESH SALAD. The green stuff was stuff that was supposed to be green! That's the only time I've ever been grateful for the chance of eating at Pizza Hut...
Restoration also moved slowly with some works such as Vier Türme completed in 1960, Dreikönigenhaus in 1977 and Liebfrauenkirche lasting until as recently as 2007. Many buildings including the Hauptbahnhof, Koblenzer Hof and Jesuitenkirche were never fully restored but rebuilt in a similar, but simplified form while others were never rebuilt for a variety of reasons from costs, material or labour shortages or difficulty in sourcing references to aid reproduction.

Not so. Being on the front line of the Cold War, West Germany received huge amounts of foreign aid in the decades after the war, and underwent the "economic miracle" to become the dominant economic force on the European continent.
Andrew, if you ever manage to make your way up to these shores, ie. Finland, you should most definetily give good old Helsinki a try. Not only do we have a well-preserved Empire-style city centre, but just off the harbour is Viaborg, the Gibraltar of the North, which is arguably the best preserved offshore fort in Europe. I really enjoy your videos and always use German subtitles for your English films and vice versa, beinf the language nerd that I am. :-D
I was there in 2005 and the statue of the unknown soldier doesnt glorify war. Its just a tribute to the german soldiers who died during the war. You still can see the holes of the bullets on the walls of the fortress and it was never conquered. A beautiful city indeed.
This may be true for cities like Düsseldorf that practically started over with cheaper, faster & modern building materials & techniques, but I don’t accept that foreign aid could have provided Koblenz the ability to undertake a massive & exorbitant restoration project. The Altstadt was dominated by Fachwerk houses that went up like tinder boxes during the heavy raids between 1944 & 1945 with something like 98% of buildings in the historic district lost.
I wonder how you would review the architecture in Rotterdam..... Having once worked in the Netherlands Architecture Institute I can say that architects have definite ideas and opinions on what can be build where. To bad it clashes too often with the taste of us common people.
Ich find's fast schlimmer, wenn historische und moderne Bauten nebeneinander stehen. Sind das ausschließlich moderne Bauten, ist es vielleicht öde, eintönig, hässlich, was auch immer, aber wenigstens sieht man nicht, wie es eigentlich aussehen müsste.
Solche Bausünden gibt's überall in Deutschland. In Lübeck steht direkt neben dem richtig schönen Rathaus ein Einkaufscenter, das geht gar nicht. Ich hab' leider keine Kamera und auch sonst keine Ahnung, sonst würd' ich's euch zeigen. Du kannst ja mal einen Wettbewerb veranstalten. "Deutschlands bauliche Fehlgriffe" oder so ähnlich :)
One US serviceman wrote upon reaching Koblenz in 1945 that the city was so badly damaged that people could never live there again, and that the city would need to be rebuilt elsewhere. Fortunately, it was rebuilt, but unfortunately aesthetics appear to have not been a priority. Still, in my 3 days there I was always finding something of historical interest. Too bad there was always an example of modern trashchitecture on either side of it. Unfortunately, much like most American cities (I'm American so I know that all too well). At least Koblenz has the excuse that they were bombed. We did it to ourselves.

I feel Germans have the right to remember their dead from both world wars. They should not be forgotton because of a crazy Kaizer and a crazy corporal.

Given the choice between using funding for one restoration every few years while several vacant lots await use, or several cheap, fast and modern (albeit ugly) buildings I can understand why they moved on the side of economic over historic restoration. I do agree it’s awful and hope future aesthetic conscious developers consider more complimentary designs, but even though I know you were going for humour as far as there being ‘no excuse’, I must disagree.
Man sollte wirklich mehr historische Gebäude wieder aufbauen, statt immer wieder, und das seit fast 90 Jahren!!!, "modern" zu bauen.Sieht dann eh nach ein paar Jahren entweder wie Betonschrott aus oder es bleibt ein überdimensioniertes Aquarium.
