In this video, author and depression counselor Douglas Bloch talks about akathisia--an intense inner restlessness brought on as a side effect of medication. Symptoms include anxiety, agitation, and a compulsion to move or to walk about. He also shows you how you can take the medication in a way that greatly reduces the risk of akathisia.

My mother was on antidepressants my entire life. She was started on opiates 20 years before I was born, when she was 14 (for nephretic colics) then she graduated on to barbiturates, then added benzos, then tricyclic antidepressants, then laxatives. When I was growing up, she didn't spend more than 1 hour without taking pills. She ate almost nothing but yoghurts, cakes (soft ones as she'd lost most of her teeth. She did have bridges and crowns but they didn't work as well as real teeth) and sugar. She was taking several dozens pills a day and we went to the GP (for her repeat prescription) at least once a week, sometimes twice (if she'd run out of drugs before the week was up). It was Hell, and because I was birthed by her, I never knew anything else. I felt like the odd one out growing up because I didn't take any drugs. I also had to 'care' for her, and to try and feed myself (a bit difficult when there's no food in the kitchen cupboards) and wash my clothes in the sink. I have gone no contact with her over 20 years ago, but if shes't still alive, I bet she's still on those drugs, which will make it 70 years of taking pills.

I've stopped binge eating, lost 22 pounds and am way more active and feeling happier again. I cannot stress the word FEELING, enough. One more depressive episode would have finished me, and it very nearly did this time, which is why I took such drastic action. Yes, sometimes I may not like what I feel, as the 'old' me starts to return, but I must acknowledge that this fight will be on for the rest of my life, and I am going to do things my way from here on in. Just understand that tardive akathisia is common after years of cumulative use. Tardive akathisia happens after you come off and it erupts. You might be lucky and just get withdrawal akathisia that eventually fades, but withdrawal akathisia can also turn chronic. Find Dr. Stuart Shipko’s writings for Mad In American and hear about his work tapering injured patients and his work documenting the risks of antidepressants like tardive akathisia.

exactly!! You cannot go from 0 to 50mg or 100mg over night, you have to go very very slowly and build up the dosage. When you first start taking any SSRI, what happens is the sudden flood of seratonin into the brain motivates you to actually do things in your life, to take action. But because it takes time for the levels to even out, you are still having depressive thoughts while having a surge of energy. so look what can happen! Someone can start taking an SSRI and then do something like actually end their life. You must be under supervision and go slowly. Like anything in life. Someone who has a very bad depression and starts taking 50mg - 100mg of SSRI is like getting into a Porsche and not being able to drive.

This may have a double lesson for you "Imgoing back to 505". We love our moms even when they push all our buttons, create drama, are jealous, or whatever. No one ever talks about the mom's negative influence over the grown kid. But speaking as a person of more than a few years, it's a great experience to own your own life and kindly and thoughtfully say NO TO MOM. One does not need to bully or be bullied by our family members. If you decide you wish to never go back, tell your Mom that you want to try to live your life without dependencies on drugs or anything. God being the loving and kind, and truly wonderful Parent is the only exception..You can tell her you need her love and support for your decision. A good selling point for you to tell her is that when you are with her, you will have better times off drugs. You've taken the first courageous steps.... I will pray for you to go forward creating your own life and being your own wonderful and unique self. God will surely help you in all of this. IF you belong to a Church that insists you are born with a sin nature... pull out Genesis Chapter ONe and find out the amazingly good and wonderful "image and likeness" you are with "Dominion" over the problems of this material world. We are all powerful spiritual beings with the power to heal as Jesus did.... "these things and greater will my followers do!" Much love from Texas

Celexa did nothing for me, same with luvox. Wellbutron made me cry and made me very depressed. Doctor I was seeing tried to convince me that I was bipolar because I wasn't responding to these drugs. Also commented saying " thanks for trying these drugs out for me " So then was put on depekote and lamictal which made things worse, even after I kept telling him I wasn't bipolar. Even got to try an anti psycotic seraquel, which was awesome if you wanted to sleep all day. I went through living hell for 4 years!!! I then I realized I felt better when I didn't take anything, maybe the occasional ativan. Finally got to see a psychiatrist who said that I'm nowhere near to bipolar, just had some bad anxiety with mild depression. The doctor then tells the man, "After your test results, I am afriad to tell you that you only have five minutes to live. The man then asks the doctor, "Is there anything you can do for me?" You're right. They don't cure anything, they just make you sick in a different way than you were before, i.e. they don't work - only supress! B-complex and chelated magnesium will help his nervous system/sleep. There are adaptogens like rhodiola and that might help too, but you have to be careful they won't interact with the drugs. No point in asking doctors, as they have so little knowledge about nutrition that they wouldn't be able to tell you what goes and won't go with what. I say make sure he's not deficient in any minerals or vits as a starting point. Docs can test for all that. We need all 90 vits and minerals to stay well. It's not complicated. Drugs cause complications. Dr. Peter Glidden knows his stuff, and there's loads of his vids on here.

"5" is based on a different understanding of "a full recovery". Today, recovery means being free of all symptoms, and being the same person as before treatment started. Pre-antidepressants, clinical depression was treated with ECT and/or lobotomy. Yes, all patients were cured for their depression. But at a horrendous price, they lost their persona, their identity. Around 1960 Tricyclic antidepressants became available. Roughly same side effects as SSRI, and only slightly less effective. But....Tricyclics often turned patients manic, which could have disastrous consequences. Another example of the cure being worse than the illness. Today, with SSRI, the government target for full recovery is 50%, based on the modern definition of recovery. And in reality, we are looking at a full recovery rate of 75%>

My doctor prescribed Prozac 10mg for me 5 days ago. I was taking it first thing in the morning with some breakfast. I have to say after day 4 I had to stop taking it all together. Day 1 wasn’t to bad, i had tremors and confusion/ trouble concentrating and dizziness as well as stomach issues and headaches. Day 2 was a bit worse but from everything I’ve heard and what my PCP told me that feeling worse was normal. Day 3 was better than day 2 but still the same symptoms with diarrhea onset. Day 4 was what made my mind up; day 4 was horrible! I was completely off the rails, anxiety, confusion, concentration were crazy bad! I was pacing and thought that I was going crazy! I stopped by my parents house and my mom wanted to take me to the ER. She said I looked extremely agitated and sweaty. I called my doctor to ask what I should do, he said that I should push through but I can’t imagine going through that again for another day. I read some interesting studies about SSRIs. The dosage is highly dependent on your enzyme activity in the liver. There are different types of metabolizers: those whose bodies can break down the active substance super quickly, those with average enzyme activity and those whose liver just very slowly breaks down the active substance. For the latter it means that they get overdosed by the standard dosages. The so called "poor-metabolizers" were excluded from the clinical studies. So the substance cumulates in their bodies, cause their liver can´t break it down quickly enough which leads to overdose and intolerable side effects - could this be on of the causes why some people develop akathisia? So the thing is, that those poor metabolizers have to be underdosed! I am one of them and I´m perfectly fine with maximum 10 mg of paroxetine. I probably would have been fine with 5-10 mg fluoxetine too but the doctor didn´t believe me and prescribed me 20 mg which was way too much!! I developed akathisia! Some people are just fine with low dosages.

I have this and I've been off meds for a year & it's still so horrific. It's making me so suicidal & I feel like it's not going to go away. I've had it while on meds but didn't know it & I kept telling my Dr something was really wrong & he just kept changing, increasing doses adding more meds. He never titrated or anything and then I did not know anything about it. I can't describe the misery I've been in for so many years. Help.

Everyone who had a bad experience: its not one try and if it doesnt work then all antidepressants are bad. It takes trial and error to get the help you need. So I could see how trying one would leave a bad taste, but here is my experience. I've had severe depression for over 10 years. The first antidepressant wasn't helpful and had opposite effects. The next antidepressant I took was wellburton. I feel like a human being again. Its the first time I felt happy in years and haven't felt like cutting anymore. Antidepressants have side effects so do natural herbs. I think I'd take the side effects of being happy and enjoying life instead of hoping to die, cutting myself, and wonder through life feeling no purpose. I don't think their is a magic cure for depression, I think right now treating the symptoms is as good as it can get. Like we would all like a cure for a million things, but their isn't a cure. Naturally there is a way to manage symptoms, but not cure it. Its better than nothing.

Thank you for this video. I normally do cut pills if not extended release. I was on the fence about taking these because I have headaches and get so nauseated I can not get out of bed. That’s no life. This is on small dose that would be considered a normal amount. I was slowly doing what you said but it wasn’t working fast enough and my anxiety was out of control. I am now searching for natural ways including reading all scriptures on peace, but may continue very small dowse to see if my body will get use to them. I was about to totally quit. I wasn’t functioning with or without them unless I could use a quick form of something for nerves. I feel so stuck but I know god will help me through My father recently found out he had an aggressive cancer and it has been a nightmare. Maybe someday I can learn to accept this along with many other things in my life. God bless you.

I am sorry that you are struggling. There are medications that you can talk with your doctor about that can help with anxiety for the short term. In the meanwhile since you mentioned prayer, I recommend that you call a really good prayer ministry call Silent Unity. You can call in 24 hours a day. If you are in the United States the toll-free number is 800-669-7729. If you're living outside the US you can call them at 1-816-969-2000. Tell them what you are going through and they will give you a prayer treatment and hold you in the light in the prayer chapel for 30 days.

Dear Douglas, I took prozac for 1.5 years without any problems. My depression was also completely gone. I was reducing my dose from 60mg to 0mg. When I reached zero, I was without depression. In that time I had appointment with doctor. I was very joyful that time and went to doctor to thank him. But, he said me my depression can come back again. It hitted me in my mind. After some days of that appointment I was feeling some sadness and started increse my dose. That made me total restless. I am suffering from this for 4 months now. I am loosing hope. Now doctor said I developed anxiety. I never had anxiety. Even with my depression I was working everything normally. Now prozac just made my life completely hell. I am hopeless. I dont feel comfort in my body. Life just seems unbearable to me. I made my mistake to go to doctor for depression. I was managing my depression very well. I miss those days badly even though with my depression. Now I am taking buspirone 10mg 3 times a day with a benzo. Is it possible to heal and remove my anxiety?

Some of the anti depressants can worsen certain symptoms. I only lasted 3 months on effexor because of agitation, palpitations and panic attacks. I didn't have panic attacks before. Just a general anxiety. My issue was low mood. The doctor was wrong to say the depression would come back. Put fear in your mind. I find when on medication I don't feel in control. It's hard to describe. I was on cymbalta for 6 years...I hope your doing well.

The sad thing about this is today all they have to do is a simple blood test. I went through what you did but was strong enough to go back to my Dr and just looked at him and said I have no idea what is wrong with me but I just want to die. I was then sent to a mental hospital for an evaluation where they did the blood work and told me I have a chemical imbalance and would never be able to take anything with a black box warning. The dr's had me flagged in the pharmacys. I went to my childrens pediatrics and had both of them tested to see if they was like me and my son is and my daughter is not. So many people have lost their lives I feel like because of SSRI's and all a Dr had to do before putting them on it was a simple blood test. This subject hurts me so bad.

I didn't ask at that time I wasn't even in a place of mind to ask. I was taking Elavil and Cymbomta. Not sure if either is spelled correctly. I'm a genially hyper out going person but I had been through the loss of a child and they said I was in depression and anxiety but thought Fibromialgia was the main source of my problem pain. So first I was put on Elavil when I went back I told my Dr something wasn't right I hurt all over and was tense then I he added symbolta within two weeks all I could think about was different ways to kill myself and make it look like an accident. Until I walked his my Drs office and past signing it and went straight to him and told him how I felt. From there after I said it out loud I started crying and everything was a blur. But the first thing they did when I went for an evaluation was blood work. My children pediatrics knew what I want when I said they did blood work on me and I have a chemical imbalance to any medications with a black box warning. I want blood work done on both my kids. He just said OK we can do that. So these Dr are educated they know it can be done. My kids pediatric has been in the field for over 35 yrs.

Mine was the CRP. Because My personality was normally hyper, friendly and a happy person and within two weeks I went to a person I didn't know. But I did have a strong will and knew the thoughts I was having was wrong. Only then was I test and I came back with a chemical imbalance that I can not take any type of medicine with a black box warning. So I had my children tested my son is exactly like me and my daughter is OK. I has been nice to know with my children because Dr's are extremely bad to just hand out medicine and not bother to do this blood work and it could save many lives. I think it should be a requirement. But I had a very bad experience with it.

Hi Doug, THANKS for this video. Last year I had akathisia. I had for almost a year. It was a nightmare. Now Im medication free and dealing with very high level of anxiety because of the horrible experience. I had symptons like fatigue, fear, sadness. I m not working and going out always with somebody. I feel that it is getting better. The doctor told me to start a new ssrri but im so afraid I have an adverse reaction again. Sometimes I feel that my nervous system is still getting back to balance because the akathisia went away only four months ago. What would you recommend?

Sorry for the late reply. Your comment was held for review. You could try another SSRI, but start with a tiny dose. Maybe 1/2 of the lowest dose that one can take. Then stay on it for awhile before you make any increase. Of course, you should work out the details with your psychiatrist and not do it on your own.

7 years. I have spent 7 years in that exact state that you just mentioned. The word agitation dosn't even remotely do it justice. If there is a hell on Earth, this is it. Unlike you, it wasn't triggered by an antidepressant. In a way it has been triggered by a lack of antidepressat. I have always had it, churning inside of me like a ball of fire. I didn't know that such a thing even exists until I went through a traumatic experience which brought it out. That was after a week long anxiety attack. After that, my world has never been the same. My life went from partially living to a quest for survival. I would really appreciate it if you reply to me because I cannot seem to find any sufficient information on this particular type of depression.
@DouglasBloch

Your trauma probably triggered the fight or flight response in your nervous system, which is why you are in a continual state of arousal. Find a psychiatrist or therapist in your area who treats extreme anxiety, and they can help you to feel better.
