the fact that entertainment laws for child actors isn't federally regulated is INSANE like the USA really is so dystopian in many ways

I don’t believe that child acting should be banned, but the laws need to be federally regulated, enforced, and tighten up on those laws.

If Child Acting was horrible on a massive network like Nickelodeon at the time, it makes me so curious to know if any other huge networks had the same issues as well but are still lying under wraps to this day. Like I can’t imagine how I would feel if it was revealed that Disney had these issues as well

the film industry is already extremely exploiative of adult actors and crew members, it’s not surprising they do the same or even worse with children. IMO the entire industry *worldwide* needs to have major law change because it is quite an unhealthy industry for anyone who isn’t famous, and probably not great for a lot of famous people too. Almost every crew member is an independant contractor. Anyone can be let go at any time and no amount of work is guaranteed. It’s an awfully stressful way to live, and the working hours, even for adults, are absurd and life draining. I think child acting is really important but absolutely the laws need to be stricter. They need to have their earnings protected and I think more restrictions on how long they can work, not just a daily limit of working hours, but also there should be a limitation on how many working days they can have in a month or year. Child acting is important, but creating child stars is not. I think we should allow children to express themselves through art, but not full time, year around. It simply isn’t healthy and robs them of having a more balanced childhood.

i feel like even if kids love acting, it's different than performing on a stage that the whole world can access. like, how can a child understand that kind of global nature of films? I can hardly fathom how many people make up 3 million. If they can't understand that (which, to be fair, they might, I might not be giving enough credit) then how can we say that their choice to be in a film is fully informed?

Exactly! Like there are so many kids that love to cook, paint, etc. but they're still not "allowed" to actually work in those roles, so why should acting be any different? Kids can still perform in local plays and stuff without having to WORK in the role. Such a cop out argument if you ask me.

yes we should. i’ll take grown adults in silly wigs if it stops this from ever happening again. if adults cannot create a safe space in the industry (which clearly they cant) they shouldn’t be allowed to have children on set.

I believe a lawyer and social worker that advocates for the child and is paid or picked by neither the company or the parents, but an advocacy group, would be a great start. They don’t represent the family but strictly the child. They play a part in assuring the scripts do not violate the children, the work day is not excessive, they are able to attend proper schooling and that any complaints they have can be made in confidence to someone who does not benefit from them hiding anything. Lastly, they would set up in the contract that the child is to have no contact with the staff outside of work or publicity events that are age appropriate. Also, I believe sets should require security cameras as well as the front of every actors trailer.

I don't think so. I think throwing the baby out with the bath water isn't necessary. I also think it would lead to more sneaky stuff happening in the shadows like fudging of ages. What is necessary is more checks and updates. A good idea would be a union specifically designed around child actors. That way they could be in charge of checking up on things , taking care of welfare etc. I also think a public reporting system and do not work with list would be very beneficial to parents and agents.

You may have already seen it since you mentioned their interviews, but Alyson Stoner also has a great podcast called "Dear Hollywood" that gives a lot of good insight into the harm of child acting and potential solutions/next steps to address the problem
