@@crystalflare0684 I don't think I'd be able to tell you many off the top of my head? I haven't played in quite a while so I don't have all the games on me. Shouldn't take you too long to find games not too dissimilar though.
I remember I made a really terrible Unity "game" I sent to Vinny back when I was 13. He wrote a scathing email live on stream to send to me, likely tired of getting sent so many terrible games. I still have that email, and I resented him for awhile, but it ultimately pushed me to actually learn to program rather than rely on pre-made assets and scripts. I never did get to see the stream where Vinny played my "game" unfortunately. Being 13, I had school and stuff, and this was before the Full Sauce channel existed.
This story is so wild to me; I have a hard time picturing Vinny doing that, especially live on stream haha. I totally get harboring resentment though. I'm sure I would've felt the same after that kind of response.
@KingCrazy9 this was all the way back in 2013/2014. Pretty sure Vinny was still a frequent user of 4Chan back then. He's more professional now, and I can't imagine he'd do the same nowadays.
Egglikes are how I got into Vinesauce, all those years ago. A lot of fun memories watching them back when. When The Excellent Game came out of seemingly no where earlier this year, I was so happy. Here’s hoping The Quest for Sausage will be good!! It’s something that’ll be sold, I believe, so it’s a shame we won’t be getting pop culture references or memes (or at least I’d assume), but I guess we’ll see what’ll happen.
I want to clear something up because I feel like a lot of people are confused on the subject. Fantaria: The Quest for Sausage only shares its vague themes, characters and world with the original Le Fantabulous Game. Otherwise, it is completely its own thing and a “legitimate” game, not an egglike. Great video, especially for your first. I would’ve liked to see you go a bit more in depth though, just overall. It also would have been nice if you went over games like Weed Chase as well, because without some of the smaller, but still known, games, I don’t think you can get the accurate and full picture of the egglike genre.
If you were to define an egglike to me it exists as a first person exploration game of what it felt like to wander geocities. Areas having the mishmash of the creator's interests and thoughts, what they think is funny and in general is fun to them. Each page/area being entirely different and customized to their thoughts on the subject, and how goofy each area ended up is really what attracted me to them.
I found Vinesauce with Vinny's Fantastic Game video in 2013-2014 and have been watching since, so egglikes have always been super nostalgic to me. This is a fantastic video, and is a good way to document some important Vinesauce history!
I only recently found this video, it's very good! I think egglikes are the closest to outsider art in video games. It's rare to get those, since games are typically a pretty open medium (with little appreciation for the art from the players...), so there are a lot of indie games made by people without a game developer's skillset. I think egglikes are outsider art where said indie games aren't due to their defiance of video game conventions.
I Wonder if this type of genre could be translated to other medias. Could there ever be an egglike movie, an egglike book even? The possibilities are truly endless
Calling fantastic game like Mario 64 or banjo kazooie is like calling a blank sheet of paper like the Mona Lisa. Only in the most barebones, roundabout way is it correct.
Holy crap dude... This is the most professionally done I've seen with so few views! This is comparable to some of the videos I've seen similar to this that have hundreds of thousands of views. I love your take on the egglike genre. Keep it up!
@@souppyyy3053 The games are often nothing like the original Rogue, and the genre lost credibility when Rogue itself was given the "Roguelike" on Steam.
@@JomasterTheSecond i suppose you're right. rogue is a very distant game from the rest of the genre, no doubt due to technological advances. the genre is named after it because it was the first to do it, but it has since transformed far beyond its namesake. i like it as a historical thing, but i will agree that the games arent like rogue at all.
I didn't even know that such a genre exists! Thought it was something new when I stumbled upon the video but eventually noticed it was released 4 years prior... Great work and interesting stuff!
HOLY CRAP, I FORGOT ABOUT THE FANTASTIC GAME! You unlocked a core memory from my childhood, I must have been in middle school back then seeing Vinny play that.
Nicely done, it is a very esoteric genre and can be difficult to pin down and explain. If you're ever looking for missing egglikes, I have many of the eggs backed up if you ever wanted to revisit any. Othewise, great video :D
The video on The Fantastic Game was how I found Vinny 12 years ago. This genre has a weird, but special egg shaped place in my heart, and I love how people still remember and create them! Great video
_Ohhhh noooo, Harry!_ You left out _Scrib's Adventure_ which I'm pretty sure came out after _The Brilliant Game_ but Vinny played it anyway. It makes up the majority of "Gettin' Weird With It" part 25. It deserves mention for being (according to him) the first egglike in which the collectables are actual eggs. By the way, I've always assumed the eggs that play Smash Mouth are a reference to the old Something Awful meme "Smash Mouth eat the eggs."
I wouldn't mind uploading the game somewhere for archival purposes because I do believe that is important, and it was something I was considering but ultimately it's not my decision to make. From what information (or lack there of) on The Brilliant game I found, it was pretty clear the creator really didn't want anyone to play their game ever again and they've since moved on to doing bigger and better things. Plus not only was the brilliant game a terrible game, but it also features some pretty "outdated" jokes that I'm sure they wouldn't want to be associated with. I would ask the creator if they'd be okay with me re-uploading it, but there no real way to get into contact with them, they do have a Twitter but they have DMs turned off unfortunately :/ Thanks for the question though!
“What I’m about to say might be a bit of a controversial statement.” *Proceeds to say one of the most normal statements I’ve heard throughout last year and the start of this year.*
There's a RU-vid video with gameplay of The Brilliant Game called "EROOTTINEN AUTOMATKA | Oudot Pelit #1" by the Finnish RU-vidr Deata. He plays another game for the first half of the video, but the second half is gameplay of The Brilliant Game. So check it out fellas if you're interested in seeing more footage, though you probably won't understand what he's saying.
I enjoy Egglikes, the O.G. ones. The wanna-be Egglikes are putrid and unplayable. some possible future Egglike contributions: Fantastic Game 2.0. LOQTN (a game on Fantasticaneers IndieDB that has some Egglike qualities to it that wasn't released). Finishing of the Excellent Game. Its a reality i still hope for to this day. Seeing stuff like this makes me feel a little less stupid knowing other people cherish these stupid games as much as I do.
I loved this video! I never even heard of Egglike games before watching this. Very interesting content that was covered here and I love video game background/information videos. You did an amazing job with explaining everything!
The idea that people who play video games are "in charge of" "consuming" a "product" is a fucking insane worldview and would makes anyone who is a video game designer cry their eyes out at night.
honestly it seems like a case of irony-fatigue with the brilliant game and all the other clones. when things are treated as too ironic you start to lose the earnest care you actually felt about it. the sequence goes one of two ways. start with irony, the ‘its so bad its good!’ kind of stuff. then it splits off into the reclamation of care, yeah its funny and its silly but you actually care about it, it may be weird and stupid but its still art, you make it more engaging, and you are free to make it rough around the edges because of the ironic origins. OR you can go the other way, clown on it until its just an echo of a joke with no actual substance.
For the love of god, how does this amazing video only have 4k views?!! Sure, that's still a lot of people but damn, I see so many other videos like this garner hundreds of thousands of views. You deserve more man.
As a developer who isn't begging for money and just using what's available to me, the prospect of a kickstarter for the spitefully made "i could do that batter" tantrum clone of a shitpost game fills me with such contempt.
Egglike games are still alive and well in the VRChat space. They can be hard to find sometimes simply because of the VRChat world search layout, and how it prioritizes popular worlds, but you can definitely find them. VRChat is sprawling with user generated content, and egglike games if you’re willing to dig a little.
Crypt Worlds is a pretty interesting game, but yeah I think you could classify it as an egglike if you want. It's definitely a more surrealistic take on the egglike genre. Though I'm not sure if the creator of Crypt Worlds even knew what an egglike was since the genre wasn't really defined until 2013 with Le Fantabulous game. Nonetheless I think it would fit well into the egglike category if anyone would ever want categorize it as such.
Interesting question because Crypt Worlds feels a lot more high quality, detailed and story-based than egglikes. Nothing about it is memey, just very surreal, I would say not an egglike but original similar game
I try to add every non-trivial game I play to Glitchwave to rate and tag it. Sure, it's no guarantee that anyone will find it, but it does help as I myself have found some hidden gems via deep dives into the site's charts.
What is the line for egglikes? Are soda drinker pro or juice simulator egglikes? Im not sure what constitues an egglike over just a "cursed" or absurdist game
I know I’m late to the party, but I knew the guy who made the Fantastic Game- it’s a tall claim, I know, but I went to high school with him, and he submitted the documentation and source code for the game as a coding project, both of which I got the chance to see. We took a coding class together. Now, for obvious reasons, I won’t disclose any names, but he was… an interesting guy, to say the least. About the kind of person you’d expect to birth a whole subgenre of terrible video games. I think he went on to go to a technical school? Not sure, haven’t spoken to him in a long time. Anyway, just wanted to throw my hat in the ring. He actually showed me the project before I saw the Vinny stream, so when I connected those dots you can imagine my surprise. Always wanted to tell someone, but privacy is important and all that. Regardless, great video, man. Hopefully this little anecdote tells you a little more about the history of this *very* strange genre.
During the brilliant game there is audio from Vinny, there did that come from? I feel like if this guy actually reached out to vinny for a comment it would say something but I have never heard that audio clip before and have a hard time imagining when it would come up.
I'm ngl, I wanted to like this video more than I did but found the scope kinda disappointing. The intro set this up as a broad look at the topic of small rushed indie games both good and bad, and I thought at some point we'd delve into stuff like 24-hour gamejam games and their relation to egg-likes but instead it was just a Vinesauce Greatest Hits with the majority of the video spent talking about a game whose developer was made to feel so guilty about that they deleted it and any association they had with it, and your only takeaway was "yeah it was bad", which kinda sucks tbh. Even if it was juvenile and ran a joke into the ground, somebody was still inspired enough to make a game and share it with the world and I think there's still something special in that. The editing and overall vibe was really nice, and I know this is feedback on a video over 4 years old so if you read this please know: if you ever revisit this topic in a slightly different light I'd watch it ASAP! I'm glad the algorithm is showing this to more people including me, and I hope this feedback doesn't come across too negative because I did still enjoy it ♥️
No worries, your feedback isn't too negative because you're completely right! I've grown a lot in the past 4 years since I made this video and if I had made it today it would be very different. "The Brilliant Game" was a horrible mess of a game, but it was also the first project of a really young developer who put their creation out there and got way too much unwarranted hate for it. Back then I overlooked this detail and added the game to the video to create an interesting story with a "mysterious deleted game." I'm glad you were able to enjoy the editing and vibe as its the two things I'm still proud of in regards to this video. Appreciate the comment and feedback!
Thanks for hearing out an internet rando! For the record I also watched your Kero Blaster video and loved it, you made a subscriber out of me lol@@MelloMuffen
