In this video we went to a deer camp in the Atchafalya Basin. The Atchafalaya Basin is America's largest swamp and a national treasure. Deer hunting with dogs is a long-standing tradition that these hunters are proud to be a part of.
This video was funded by the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area. www.atchafalaya.org

Gee, thanks for taking me back to my beginning of deer hunting (1965). Since my father died when I was 7, I never was taught much about firearms or deer hunting until I got to hunt with a friend of mine at a deer camp in the Ouachita Mts. in Arkansas. The men at the camp ranged anywhere from their mid 40's to their 80's. I learned a lot about deer hunting through them, and I also learned how to spin tall tales, cuss, play poker, and freeze your rear off without complaining. IT WAS GREAT!

Some of my first deer hunts were with dogs. We didn't have tracking collars for the dogs so often times we hunted deer for 2 hours and dogs for 2 days! I transitioned from a dog hunter to a still hunter then to a Traditional Bowhunter! Bowhunting teaches you so much more about deer since you spend so much more watching deer than shooting deer! Great Times!
@OutsidetheLevees

I went scouting last October and it was bad. 80% of the trees that aren't Cypress were downed by the storm. I didn't even try to hunt it the last 2 seasons. I'm gonna go back out soon just to check it out for next season.

Looks like great fun. I've only seen the Atchafalaya from the I-10 causeway. I stopped at a rest stop where they had a visitor center telling all about the swamp and the construction of the interstate through it. There was a really pretty young woman in there who was a naturalist or something with the State and was redoing and up keeping the displays. Free awesome Community coffee there as well. I spent close to an hour there. I have dogged deer before though. Got invited to the oldest deer club in Alabama called Dollarhide. One morning they held drives with dogs. Was not sure I was going to like it...or even approve! But man it was super exciting and extremely interesting. Man, deer running away from the approach of the dogs....deer running towards the dogs trying to get through the drivers...and deer doing the stealth approach. Rules were no does and bucks of six points or better. I guess I saw an over six pointer slink by who had three points up but I couldn't see the other side and a lot of deer there don't have the brow tines. He slunk by quick and then just disappeared into thin air like a savvy buck will do. Would love to hunt that way again. Cost me 93 dollars though...you see I'd only hunted bird with a plug in my pump 12ga....never deer...but the guy who invited me said you didn't have to have a plug in for deer and had me take it out and load 5 rounds. Well I forgot to put it back in and went dove hunting in Georgia in September almost a year later. I loaded two and chambered one and then put the third one in the tube. Checked to make sure the youth 1100 20ga I'd borrowed for my son had a plug but never checked mine because I'd only ever hunted birds and it was always plugged. A female Fed ranger ticketed me after I think the male ranger was going to just warn me. Then the female walked off and the guy said...you can continue hunting and just cut a stick off that bush you are sitting next to and use it for a plug. I told him I knew that and could have done it...and likely would have done it...if I'd remembered it wasn't in there, during the almost thirty minutes while I watched you guys checking the end and far side of the field. I've been so religiously aboveboard when it comes to following the regs that it kind of pissed me off!

Jared great video! Please, please, please give us some more videos of the dog hunting. I grew up hunting in the basin in Butte La Rose on what they call the Island and hunted with dogs from 1983 until 1998 and I miss it terribly. Nobody has these videos of dog hunting in the basin. I would love to get back into a hunting club that runs dogs. You would not by any chance be looking for members?

Brother I am not a member so I can’t say for sure. But yes I would agree that we need more dog hunting videos. I will be prepared next year.

One of the main things I miss about moving north and commercialization of hunting. My kids literally have no idea how it used to be. Now unless you hunt overcrowded public, know someone, or have $$$ you are shite out of luck. The "family" isn't there any more. It's sad.

All of that for 2 days hunting and nothing shot to take home. Time at camp is always good but I'd rather hunt where they have deer. Here is Pa. I shot as many as 3 in one day with a bow and arrow, and no Dogs. Lots of Big Black Bears, just getting to old and after a severe Heart Attack it's time to watch the young ones do the hunting.
