Watch this video to see the Different types of Cottages. Hi Guys! This video is all about English cottages & Cottage Architecture!
Over the past 2 years, with the surge in cottagecore search terms and interest sky-rocketing, it’s pretty clear that a lot of us like a chocolate box cottage, thatched cottages, cottage style (or more specifically English cottage style)- so I thought it would be a fun idea to do a definitive guide to English cottages , so to speak, where I give you an architectural guide on the subject. Without naming names, I see lots of people online confuse viewers about what an English cottage is, and actually give false info on English architecture history lol. And because of that, I just wanted to clear a few things up, start a series on architecture styles explained and list all the kinds of Fairytale cottage found here in the UK and give you guys MY architectural study on a cottage tour.
So if you're interested in the history of cottages & architecture history… let's go!

We have a style of cottages that you didn't mention, it's called Storybook and it was popular in the 20's and 30's. It's was mixture of several revival movements with a leaning towards fictional storybook homes. There are some really interesting houses in this style.

Thank you. I'm French, I'm renovating a farmhouse in Brittany, I've been to the Cotswolds and the Yorkshire Dales for inspiration last year. Going to mix these styles. My house is going to be true to Brittany but with English features like an Aga, flagstone floors and even one or two sash windows. England is a land of inspiration to me. Your sense of taste and style is unmatched.

As an American I have traveled to Wales and the UK. I love The Dales, in Yorkshire. Your channel this morning was informative and I adore the history. You inspire me. Your a young lady and I'm much older than you. Continue to bring such beautiful information. I have renovated (7) seven homes. I am currently working on a farmhouse cottage in The Appalachian Mountains of the USA. It was built in 1960 with original interior and in desperate need of attention due to lack of care management. I'm excited to bring the home back to a healthy environment first which just has been completed and moved onward from there. Keep up your site information. It's lovely to watch and listen to.

Although not a beer drinker, I could happily live in an oast house, with its characterful rounded tower and expansive attached open space. Also I prefer this type because I am a fiend for reuse and recycling. It breaks my heart to see so many large and beautiful old barns collapsing on their footings throughout the US countryside, when they could be repurposed into magnificent dwellings. I admire the UK emphasis on preservation.
@dantierandbalogh
@dantierandbalogh Год назад
Hi Gina! I've been lucky to go to an oast house, and they converted the tower into a lovely circular bedroom- it was very interesting and unique. My favourite Cottage is the Cotswolds Cottage style - in real life they truly do glow a gold tone ✨ I had no idea about that problem with barns in the US?!! that's so sad 😥😥 Here in the UK we are prone to 'adaptive reuse' projects, as so many older buildings are listed (meaning that it's illegal to tear them down lol). Which as you said is fantastic preservation but sometimes older buildings are extremely difficult to renovate physically 😅 For example thatched cottages here are SO expensive, as they are nearly impossible to get insurance on - due to them being fire hazards, low energy rating etc 🤣🤣

Except you cannot just have every barn in the country turned into expensive barns. It would change the very nature of the countryside you presumably like. Plus it does nothing for the local rural housing crisis. Barns make excellent shops, workshops etc which woUld produce local jobs

I have to disagree with you over the rarely seen thatched cottage. An awful lot of cottages were originally thatched , but due to the high maintenance costs were then tiles or slated. That’s why they are rare not because there were not many originally.
@jontalbot1

The colours referred to are traditionally in East Anglia, especially Suffolk. The pink was achieved by mixing blood into lime wash, ochre came from mixing clay. Incidentally, Timbers are not blackened everywhere. It’s a practice most associated with Cheshire and later Arts and Crafts buildings. From the 1860s A&C architects went around the country sketching vernacular buildings to incorporate into their designs.
@mikepowell2776
@mikepowell2776 Год назад
Very interesting summary with good diagrams and some really lovely photos. ‘Cottage’ comes from Old English ‘cot’ which simply meant hut. Cotters, who occupied them, were estate employees owning no land of their own. Cottages usually came with sufficient land for the occupier to grow sufficient food for his family. That was part of the deal. Black and white cottages were often originally red and white where animal blood was a component of the fluid painted on as a form of surface preservative. It also accounts for the popularity of pink as a traditional colour for daubed outer surfaces. I no longer live in a cottage but in an apartment in a building we believe was originally completed around 1470. If they’d had mortgages in those days it would have been paid-off about the time Colombia’s sailed. Hence my interest in vernacular architecture.

I’m from the North Leicestershire, in the vale of Belvoir. The local stone here is ironstone, so all the cottages are a lovely shade of burnt orange, slightly warmer than the Cotswold cottages

A couple of builds (pun not intended) on your narrative. 1. Oast houses are also found with square cross section. Because the freshly harvested hops had to be in and drying in short order, the kilns were positioned near the hop gardens and may be found in large numbers in not just Kent and Sussex, but also on the Surrey and Hampshire borders and in the West Midlands. 2. Thatching of English cottages (as opposed to Scottish and Irish) come in three main styles: Norfolk reed (most durable), Devon reed (actually straw!) and long straw (least durable).

My favourite has always been the half timbered cottages although they all have their charm. I first saw them in Germany and even had a holiday in one of these very wonky cottages. It was over 500 years old and of course nothing like that in Australia 🇦🇺 where I live. Outstanding.

Although I reside in the Midwest USA I found a house built in 1910.. I gutted the house and was delighted to find it was made of walnut. My theme was relaxed English style with lots of browns tans and maroons. Antique furniture when it could be acquired. I planted wisteria around the home and this really gives it that cottage look. I wanted a thatched roof but firecodes made this impossible so when I reroofed the house I chose what I imagined a cottage roof to look like! Naturally I have gardens with fruits and flowers.....but with a relaxed feeling when one comes into the home. There is also a waterfall that came with the house that we enlarged. I have many muched loved items from tag and boot sales......if you look for your colour scheme you are on your way. Go for timeless items and splurge on good rugs. Go for quality on your furniture this will reek English style. Cheers.

Hi from the UK, I worked as an architectural restorer (mainly timber), and the true definition of a cottage is a building with nothing between the upper windows and roof line, opposed to a house which will have some brick or stone between top of the window and roof. Many of the late Tudor and Elizabethan houses were built using reclaimed oak timbers from the many war ships of that time hence the often convex/concave timbers used. Interesting video, thanks for posting
@davidheggi9866
@davidheggi9866 Год назад
Interesting, Paul, about the true definition of a cottage. So the windows and doors are tucked under the eave/roof? I've seen some like that in film depictions. Also the wonky timbers. I thought they were just natural tree cuttings, like the cruck members of a wall-gable end. I like the idea of "repurposing" the oak of war ships, an aspect that adds to the romantic character of these beautiful houses
@paulmaryon9088
@paulmaryon9088 Год назад
@@davidheggi9866 Hi David, cottage windows (a generalisation) would be just below the timber wall plate, often nailed into it, though we often now mix the terms house and cottage, and yes I have worked in many old buildings where timbers have been reclaimed from some very strange sources!

You are lucky in the UK that when modernizations for windows is done, I see much effort has been put into the aesthetic toward the historic structures they will fit to. Here in the US, unless the owner is knowledgeable and goes out of their way to maintain the character of the original home, window replacements look fake, plastic, bulky and just plain unattractive. Where I live this is partly due to the horrific storms we endure every year (southeast region) but still… Most window replacements look horrible in my opinion. I still have (and maintain myself) my original 1920’s (old by America’s standards!) window sashes and casings and I love them!
@shelleyphilcox4743
@shelleyphilcox4743 Год назад
@Lindas5964 Many older properties in the UK are 'listed buildings' or are in 'conservation areas'. This means you are obligated to maintain the building in accordance with the original design and materials, which can be very expensive as the materials and skills to produce them are becoming increasingly rare.

I subscribed last year. I am retired and now living in a totally rural area in the Blue Ridge Mountains, since 2018, after purchasing a circa 1938 clapboard turned stucco, two story. Bead board walls and ceilings. Heart pine floors. It's not possible to hammer a nail in these walls. Only an electric screwdriver will penetrate. Eventually I managed to hang all my many mirrors and old oil paintings. Whew! Petrified wood everywhere...makes a really dark moody backdrop for my countless books and curated collection of this and that. I guess my library décor just could not be contained in my actual library...because I love filling bookshelves and decorating with carefully stacked books and even specialty vintage magazines and periodicals in every room. I named my home, "Moonbow Cottage". I didn't know about Dark Academia as an aesthetic... until I viewed your video on that style last week. I must have missed that vid when it first came out. I do hope that your channel grows. You deliver excellent material and content...with class and integrity. I appreciate that you aren't posing as a drama queen putting on a performance... Many thanks for this delightful tour. The cottages are almost as beautiful as you, luv! I lived in England for 35 years (half my life), mostly in SW suburban London, married to an Englishwoman from Twickenham. We also lived in the East Midlands near Peterborough, and there's a huge swathe of limestone running through Northamptonshire, Rutland, part of Leicestershire, up across Lincolnshire and into Cambridgeshire. So the area has strong similarities to the Cotswolds. After my wife passed away, I bought a golden limestone, Victorian cottage in Rutland. That's still my favourite cottage style but it's difficult to choose. I had to sell it and move back to America (for medical reasons) but I wish I still lived in it.

The lock keeper cottages along the Birmingham to Stratford-upon-Avon canal are unique amongst UK cottage architectural styles in being built with barrel roofs that are covered in pitch to make them watertight. Whaen you described cottages built on great estates to accommodate poor relations I couldn't help but think of the Dashwood sisters in Sense and Sensibility. Thanks for all of the information about the various styles. I grew up in a Tudor Revival in the U.S. and loved it.

I am interested in how big some of the cottages are. As part of the definition of cottage being a small structure, some of the examples look rather large. How big can a structure be and still be considered a cottage?

I lived 50 years in London and in mid nineties I bought two cottages. One in France and one in greater London. The French one is built in granite stone, and as I restored it entirely inside and outside, I tried to give it an English look in both. I bought loads second hand, and made it cosy and comfortable. The cottage in UK is very small. From the outside it has 2 windows up, two down and a wooden door in the middle with a small front garden. By it size it is very cottagey inside, but as it faces North, I keep it pastel. I think some places that you have shown look more like houses to me than cottages, especially the Victorian ones. Lovely program though. Thank you.

In the SouthWest of the United States we often use adobe and stucco however, there are places in the hill country of Texas that is More German than Mexican. In Arizona we find a combination of English and local queried materials. Did I mention that Arizona is home to the original London Bridge? It was dismantled rock by rock and transported to a place called Lake Havasu where it was reassembled on land next to the lake. Once complete, a channel was dug to allow water to flow order the bridge. A cottage style combination can be found in the area to emulate the feel of England.

My friends, who were born and raised in London, and worked in music stores owned by the same person who caved in to rock and roll. They were sisters who never married and one worked in the rock store and the other worked in classical store across the street. When it came time to retire, these OAPs checked out the estate cottages in the North of England and the South of Scotland. They found a lovely little one on a working estate in the South of Scotland. Their cottage was called The North Gatehouse. Cute. When my friend, the younger sister, took the dog walking (who died the year before she did), she loved to visit her friend a 5 minute walk away on a beach. It was called the Laundry Cottage. I love the name but thought, with my luck, people would leave laundry for me to do! The North Gatehouse had a little backyard that opened onto a little wood that was also fun to walk in, esp during hotter days. Instead of being stuck in a studio apt on the 12th floor, I would love to live in England/Scotland in a lovely little refurbished cottage on an estate. By the way, I have named my apt, The Little Shoebox. Thank you for this lovely tour! (I loved all of them, but most seemed too large for me and had a second story, I can't climb stairs. The North Gatehouse was a single floor.)

I live in the Southwest in the US. Its super hot desert. All the houses out here look the same, boring tan stucco. I love French Country/Cottage Core. My boyfriend seems to think because we live in the desert and live in a desert house, we can't have pretty French Country inside. We love antiques, history, the old ways, greenery (grass and trees). I think no matter what the outside of our house looks like, we can have whatever we want inside.

Thank you so much for this informative and very pleasantly lighthearted presentation about the actual definition of COTTAGE as used in the UK. What was new to me was that it defined a kind of poor man's or farmer's home, that did NOT have any land. But now that you have outlined it, it actually makes sense to me, considering the landlord / peasant relationship in UK history. So thank you so much. I love anything English and I am still seeing myself living in one of those jewels one day soon. So please do go on with your channel...glad I found you here...will watch your content regularly to help me make my dream and specific wishes come true sooner....lots of love from Germany ;)

I'm living in one. And it is my favourite! It's a simple stone, two-storey worker's cottage, probably more than 200 years old, which has been sensitively modernised. You get lots of wildlife (mainly of the eight-legged variety) coming in. There are families of sparrows living in the roof. Some people wouldn't take to it, but for me it's paradise.

Love the Cotswold cottages and the Victorian, and must add one extra the Yorkshire Dales! I live in the U.S. but just love all the lovely landscaping and the homes of Britian, The house we have is closest to the Victorian. The Red Brick etc and have put flowers all around and have tried to copy a look of living in a sort of English Cottage. Would love so much to live in Britian and truly have a real cottage there but under the circumstances looks like this is her we are to stay. Thank you for showing these hems and explaining just what the history is behind each stile. Absolutely loved it and look forward to seeing more videos like this in the future. Learned from "Escape to the Country' episodes that we get, from maybe 2014, on no charge afternoon TV. Gives a much better impression of England than the decorating shows where they take perfectly tolerable, if boring, decor & redo it in turquoise, orange & glittery silver (& that's just the dining room). You give a much better impression.

Many of the "cottages" you shown in this video are huge homes. My definition of cottage would be first of all , a small home, 1000 sq ft or less. I lived in a modern brick & wood home for many years that was 1100 sq ft- a small home. I decorated in a "cottage style" which was pretty much an eclectic style - several antique pieces - and even the new furniture was what Americans call country style. I considered that house a cottage.I loved that cottage brings up feelings of warm and cozy.
