The sidechain effect on the Deluge is not just for creating a "pumping" affect. You can take synth clips to wild places with a little bit of experimentation.
There are several workflow and use cases shown in this clip so stay till the end.

And here I've just been using the default gold knob sidechain for volume ducking like an amateur

I'm going to have to watch this about a hundred times. So many ideas! I'm really not digging deep enough into this incredible device.

Basically using the sidechain send as a generic automation/modulation parameter, but easily sequenceable and playable. Very nice! Learning them to the knobs takes it to outer space. Seriously great video series so far. I'm struck by how many of these slightly off-the-path tricks there are hidden inside Deluge, and how musical they end up being. I've been playing around with velocity sensitivity in the arpeggiator, which you can use to create ghost notes and grooves that work like polyrhythms. Now you've got me wanting to add in a sidechain layer to make it evolve over longer timescales.

Is this the Elliot Williams that wrote the Logic Noise articles? If so, just wanna say thank you so much for writing those! They got me into synthesizers and helped me learn a tonne about electronics and I recommend them all over the place! :)

Gonna have to watch that back at a slower sync rate! 😂 Amazing sounds from this method, thanks for sharing Ian!:)

Yes, it's great to see all the possibilities, but, if Ian(?) could do the first part - in particular - at a slower rate, or even just do a very simple example slowly, the rest would be easier to follow. I'm a music teacher, and, I know how you can explain the simplest things too quickly and then lose the pupils immediately. The result being that they get bored for rest of the lesson, as they have absolutely know idea what's going on.

Thanks for sharing. New to the Deluge and just testing out the sidechaining process flow. I was under the impression that I had to go to my Synth track, then, select the Sidechain/Reverb button to control the Sidechain from the upper gold knob. Thus, this sort of through me a "curve ball" since you never used that part (unless I completely missed it?).

Is all of this applied just to that one drone track? Like I can make another drone and do it all over again for some crazyness and switch back and forth between the tracks?

Can someone explain in more detail whats happening with the sidechaining here? If I understand sidechaining correctly, there is (in this case) one drum track which acts as the trigger by sending out an 'on' signal, this trigger then triggers whatever the sidechain is connected to, right? In this case, the kick triggers a 100% (fully turned up knob?) for whatever it is being sent to, while the hi-hat triggers that effect for 50%, right? So if we have the drum kit sidechained to reverb for a synth, the kick triggers a fully turned up knob for reverb each time the kick plays? Very interesting stuff

Yip. Pretty much. You can send multiple parameters to the Sidechain effect (incl. Reverb), then have whatever samples you like be the trigger by dialling in a percentage to the Sidechain "send", you can also have that be reversed by dialing in a negative amount

still not 100% sure what the sidechain 'shape' actually does (not in manual) anyone? sine >> square?
