A reconstruction of John Harrison's successful Longitude timekeeper H4.
Derek Pratt, one of the 20th century’s most talented watchmakers, had always been a fan of John Harrison and was determined that a re-creation of his most successful timekeeper H4 should be constructed.
Derek started work in 1997, using other talented craftsman for the case, dial and engraving. Then in 2009, due to ill health, when approximately half of the watch had been completed, Charles Frodsham & Co took on the project which was finished in 2014. Displayed worldwide at the Ships, Clocks and Stars: The Quest for Longitude exhibitions at the National Maritime Museum, America and Australia.
This is the story of that remarkable achievement.

honestly, if you simply posted the video on youtube in its full length, you'd probably get enough subscribers and revenue from youtube to outweigh the DVD sales.

Hand work like this not lost, but is greatly reduced to a passionate and dedicated few. It is also fortunate that there are generous supporters of this fine art, who recognize that this craft must continue. I, a humble metals craftsman, got my start, by being interested in the silversmithing skills of the 1700s, and so became a silversmith in fact. That was 60 years ago and i am a machinist/ sculptor/jeweler to this day.

I love the Longitude story and how John Harrison solved a problem that changed the navigable world with his succession of timepiece’s. Starting with a long case clock, to eventually recreating the pocket watch. Watching this video really brings home the geniuses of the man and the hardships it must of taken to build without modern technology. Thanks for sharing!!!

I just read the book (Dava Sobel) Longitude. Facinating. But more facinating is that you build a copy, so accurate. History is alive again. Fantastic work. Thank you.

Such as? Apart from electricity, the tools that were used in the video aren't new. Copper laps and steel gravers have been around for quite a few centuries!

I salute your craftsmanship. I've done some machining so I know how hard it is to make something that perfect.

Never ever heard of a chronometer. Went down a rabbit hole- found out about Greenwich which led me to Harrison- training in Genetics not engineering. This device is fascinating and the work put in here is incredible to watch. The level of craftsmanship is awesome.

Even with modern machinery it seemed quite a challenge. I can only Imagine the many many hours it took then (as it did today). Beautiful video. Kudos!!!

First, obviously, it's wonderful that others honour John Harrison as I do, and secondly it actually showed me something of the techniques used to create the components that go into a clock. Thank you very much for posting

I am so happy that there are people that can still do all these old world kills , as I am a metalworker and love all skills and the English speaking world seems to have lost pride in its past industries because of the ineptitude and ignorance of the political classes of how wealth is created .

A modified verge escapement was what won and the rest is history. To think Harrison knew about the co-efficiency of linear expansion of brass and steel to create a temperature compensation device in a mechanical timepiece, a first in any branch of physics is beyond me. He invented the bimetalic strip at a time when this concept was well above the heads of the most educated and he was not educated in the true sense of the word, yet had worked it out for himself. I'd say he had a gift from God.

Would like to interest you creating ultra accurate classical clocks. Have many new ( classical) innovations. Need someone who can put the gears together. Maybe a watch with a premature and a more precise balance. Do you like working small? Or large? I don’t know where the money would come from. If you can build a watch for me I’m sure High accuracy would draw a good price.
