The Chevrolet Cruze is one of the first cars we featured when we moved to Québec last year, so how has our opinion changed about it since? We also test the 1.6L turbo diesel option.
Both Volkswagen Group and Mercedes-Benz/Daimler pulled their diesel engines out of the North American market, leaving BMW, Jaguar, and now Chevrolet as the main diesel engine manufacturers. In Canada, the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze is the only consumer-segment sedan to offer a diesel engine, shared with the Equinox and GMC Terrain. We put this small car to the test!
Our full tour and review of the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback diesel goes in-depth with this compact hatchback, talking about the important exterior and interior features, along with a comprehensive road test to talk about performance, ride, handling, and fuel economy. Exterior features include the RS appearance package, halogen headlights, halogen fog lamps, rear parking sensors, keyless entry, and 18" rims.
Interior features include front heated seats, heated steering wheel, 8" Chevy MyLink display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, reverse camera, blind spot detection, forward collision warning, and rear cross traffic alert. The Cruze also comes with the Diesel True North Package.
We talk about the fuel economy we got with our 650km+ week with the Cruze diesel, including some important things to consider if you're thinking of buying a diesel car.

This car has a huge following here in the US. A ton of MOD options. Trifecta tune cold intake being the most recommended. Love the Cruze. ❤❤❤✋🙂👍

There is a way to get around the start/stop with the diesel as well as the gas for the 2017 models and up. Not sure about previous years. Put the shifter into (L)ow (manual mode) instead of (D)rive. Keep the brake on and then shift the gears using the + sign on the shifter to you see 9th gear appear on your info window. Leave it in 9th gear and then drive as normal. It will upshift and downshift automatically. The car drives exactly the same as being in Drive but will not shut off. Car actually drives smoother in my case.

I just purchased a 2018 hatchback. Black, standard gas model LT with 6spd auto. I can't *believe* how much room is in this thing. I am used to trucks with less sprawling room than this. I mean sure, I've been in more *technicially* luxury cars - don't get me wrong, but literally speaking, this is a luxurious car to drive. Super comfortable (with cloth seats anyway. I have to stay away from leather. I get in and out with work too much. Leather is a waste), very responsive to drive, and I mean it will flat move if you put your foot even halfway down (in fact, it almost feels as though it goes faster that way than mashing it to the floor). Also, room. Did I mention the room? Holy crap there is so much room in this little car! I can't say enough good things about it. I haven't really, truly *enjoyed* my car in a very long time. Always just trading off to the next one after I miled it out. I go through them every 2 to 4 years driving them all over a multi-state area doing field tech work. Always tried something new. This was the best choice I've made in a long time! Android Auto? Oh hellzyeah. I am so loving this so much. All the calls that come in from work all day long on the road? All of the texts I can just listen to and reply back to using my VOICE! Holy crap. It's just amazing. I realize that's not just this car - but it adds to my n00b experience. My system is not a Bose, so I have no idea about that - but the sound system is amazing to my ears (and my butt. Lots of bump in it I wasn't expecting). Anyway, TL;DR - I love this car and it is an amazing buy. What you get for your money is really hard to beat. Later!

We’re glad to hear that you have one and love it! It’s unfortunate Chevy is killing off the Cruze after 2019 for the North American market, especially with this being the only diesel you could buy in the segment.

@MandrakeDCR
@MandrakeDCR 5 лет назад
@@highcountrypioneer3025 My most recent trip was about 184 miles, mostly all 70mph interstate (in all honesty, I had the cruise set at 75), and the average mpg was 38.1. That's only about 4 miles or so total of City driving. Like I said, job sites were right of the interstate.

You can override the Auto Stop by putting the automatic shifter in the (L) mode then press the + button until you reach #6 on the bottom of the instrument cluster. The transmission will still shift through all gears automatically. Auto Stop override.

Sounds like a lot of work to do something that should be included as a button.

@@PRNTestDrive oh I totally agree, however because they didn't make that feature on the 2017, that's the only way to override unfortunately.

Great review. There is actually a way of switching the Auto Stop feature. Chevrolet just doesn't tell you. :) Try to announce the decibel levels of each car rather than mentioning if a car seems loud or not. It makes it much more legit and scientific. Keep up the good work.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
I believe we mentioned in our episode last year that the system can be cheated if the AC or heat is running on high, or if the engine isn't warm enough yet. As for decibel levels, it would require us to get a meter beyond our standard recording equipment. Might be something we can budget down the road.
@-Munditimum-
@-Munditimum- 6 лет назад
The "cheating" is done through/by the gear selector. :) The decibel meter is always an assured way of making a statement more scientific than just a feel. There are many factors with sound waves as well as other things that can trick with our interpretation. I say this since your presentation and show overall is very well put together stemming from a calm sense of presentation rather than other reviewers who constantly present their feel of things as facts and preach it to others. Keep up the good work.
@haywoodjablome234
@haywoodjablome234 5 лет назад
Munditimum Mosu it's not cheating. Put gear selector in L, tap the + on top of gear shifter up to L9 and Stop/Start is defeated....

This engine is also available in the Equinox/Terrain. Unfortunately, they are not selling. The Cruze is cancelled so these will be rare.

@PRNTestDrive 5 лет назад
That it is! We actually had the Equinox diesel booked about a month before this but there was a problem with it clearing entry into Canada, so they had to bump our booking for it.

That's the only real downside to these, is so few were made/sold here that most places won't really know what parts to order for it. It was a fun little experiment for GM for those few years.

5L/100km is a lot for a 1.6d tbh. My best is 3.9L/100km in a 2014 Škoda Octavia 2.0TDI, averaging 4.1L/100km on open roads with AC off. Considering old 1.9tdi's can do the same, this cruze is bit of a let down.

We're starting to realize that fuel economy numbers are really hard to report on, since so many factors can contribute. We're in the process of filming a vehicle this week that will set a new standard for how we report on fuel economy, we've come up with a 100km TestDrive Circuit that allows us to measure the fuel econ in city, highway, and coasting with variable elevations and traffic flows. Each vehicle from this week onward will go through this same test, and we'll be using those fuel economy results as the official numbers for each car. We hope it's going to help settle things a bit!
@malcolmnewall6867

Question of different emissions standard also. North American emission standard seems to create issues here. Frankly epa focus on concentrations instead of total emissions seems to be a problem hence vw fails which would be a problem for Skoda as well.

Compact cars like this have gotten bigger since the mid 2000s, you might find this Cruze feels about as spacious as your Altima. I used to drive a 2010 Altima, im 6 foot tall and found the interior on this to be decent in terms of space.

Interesting choices! The Fiesta would definitely be more fun to drive over the diesel on this, but the Cruze being a bigger car would offer a slightly different experience depending on what you're going for.

if wasn't a cold start, the engine is not extremly quiet for today's standard, certanly quieter than 10-15 years ago diesel but 1.6 crdi by hyundai is quieter. if average fuel consumption has been reset few km ago, may be change a lot in a short period of time due to dpf (diesel particulate filter) burning, since it burn particulate with extra diesel injection, durin that process (require full temperature engine and around 10 minuts) the fuel consumption skyrocket... but yes, diesel engine suffer short drivings, at least 25 km at time, otherwise not only increase consumption but cant complete dpf burning cycle.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
The auto-start we did was about as cold as we got it, the car was pulled into place after running for a minute to position it. Part of the reason for the start-up was just to get that raw diesel sound :D We were pretty impressed with the overall fuel efficiency though, just wish we had recorded how the gas versions we tested last year did.

@@PRNTestDrive Because nobody knows that a diesel hatchback with a 6 speed exists. Europe has all the good cars and we are stuck with huge garbage wagons that suck gas and fall apart after less than a decade. Allegedly this is what we like. When GM finally gets a car that costs less than a hybrid but beats the gas mileage they make every effort NOT to let everyone know about it. Ill bet they didn't even let the leasing companies have it. It was destined to fail because of corporate leadership NOT lack of demand.

Meh... I'm not impressed. I average 6.2L/100km with my 2017 Forte manual and that includes really bad Montreal trafic. On long drives (like Mtl-Qc), I get 4.5. The 2019 Forte is expected to be much better with its IVT. Also, manual AC and halogens on a 32$k car???
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
Those are certainly pretty impressive numbers. Fuel economy is always a hard number to review, considering how many factors ultimately go into our daily driving habits. We did a lot more very short in-town driving with the Cruze than we'd like, and we almost always had multiple passengers in the car.
@vladsaghin7644
@vladsaghin7644 6 лет назад
True! I always like to play a game in rush hour trafic where you never have to stop and always keep the car rolling! It saves a bit of gas but more importantly, it helps with the trafic. I don't get why people always have to accelerate like crazy only to stop completely for a few seconds in like 30 meters.

yeah... also north america lack of roundabouts... they help a lot, no unecessary stoping, smother traffic flow, basically less traffic
