RU-vid comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of RU-vid comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

The caller claimed that consciousness is a fundamental property of the universe. Consciousness is an emergent property of nerves. It’s not fundamental to the universe.

Well in our case yes. Plants too have it. It becomes more subtle... but emergent property. YES!

He doesn’t get it because he has reached the limit of atheistic conception.

Deepity, in more detail (I think) : to the extent its profound, its false. And to the extent its true, its trivial.

I disagree that consciousness is a fundamental aspect of the universe. This universe does have conscious entities in it. But it didn't necessarily HAVE to. And may go through periods when it doesn't. On earth, people are "conscious". Other animals are also conscious, if differently or even less so. It stands to reason that there is life, much or all of it conscious, on other planets (and perhaps locales other than planets). Quote possibly dozens or thousands or even billions of planets. But it's also quite conceivable that a universe could develop where no sentient arises anywhere. No accretion of massing planets. Etc. A universe could still be a universe (all the stuff: matter and energy) without conscious life developing. Conscious life isn't inevitable. Or at least we can't presume to state that it is.

This kinda sucks because I can tell what the caller is trying to say (though I don't agree) but he just doesn't have the vocabulary (in English) to convey it. A lot of languages have concepts, emotions and experiences that just can't be translated into English, usually 'cause of cultural context but sometimes 'cause the word just doesn't exist. Indian languages are some of those, this guy probably speaks Hindi as a first language so it was hard to communicate concepts he grew up with.

Bollocks in English is still bullocks in Esperanto, or any other language.

The hosts were very disrespectful and insensitive to the caller. Obviously with the language barrier they should've been a little bit fairer in how they were communicating with the caller. It seemed more like mockery.

you guys just spoke down to this dude for 11 minutes. The universe is governed by the laws of physics is a perfectly correct way to put it. His thought on how consciousness is the only way to defy these laws of physics is actually super insightful.
@brucebaker810
@brucebaker810 5 лет назад
They were leery of "governed implies a Governor". Like "laws" mean that there's a Law Giver/Maker. And Ray Comfort's "building implies a builder; painting implies a painter; creation implies a creator".

@@brucebaker810 I get that, but governed doesn't have to imply a governor because in the context of the dude calling it simply means a set of laws that the universe follows and through our experience the only way these laws can be broken is through our consciousness/imagination and thats so insightful I don't think the hosts gave the caller the respect of trying to understand his side, instead of poking holes in it. Also most likely both of them are wrong so I don't get why the hosts are so stubborn

+ Madhav Gupta This caller Ram deserved the 'talking down to' that he got from the hosts. Ram sounds like one of the innumerable hindu theists who try to give vague, absurdly abstract definitions of god in an attempt to show that hinduism is (supposedly) scientific, and/or that the hindu god is more "broad-minded" than the gods of other religions (especially the megalomaniacal god of the abrahamic cult-religions). The system that is considered in present times to be Hinduism/Sanatana Dharma, has contradictory and conflicting definitions/meanings of the nature of the so-called god/supreme-being/supreme-truth/ultimate-truth (or whatever other semantic nonsense is used as a euphemism to refer to the hindu god). In the final analysis, *Hinduism, just like ALL other god-espousing belief-systems, FAILS* to provide any verifiable evidence that its concept of god(s) even exist(s) in the first place.

@@yevodee4024 I respect that your comment makes sense as an independent thought but it has nothing to do with what I said. I think you're going about this in a much more religion orientated mindset than philosophical which is the disconnect. Even the notion that he was trying to imply hindusim to be better is kinda ridiculous,..
