Diné women are passed down a weapon against poverty and hunger. Navajo Grandma explains the history and importance of Diné/Navajo 'Adeestsíín/stirring sticks.
This woman is a fantastic teacher and so generously shares the Navajo/Dine' culture with us. I love that you tell us the Navajo pronunciation of the words. You ROCK Navajo Grandma! Keep putting RU-vid content out there for us!! Greetings from Philadelphia! 👋
Hello to chiarabellagrrl from Philadelphia. Thank you for taking the time to comment. Glad you are watching and learning and hearing the Dine' Bizaad (Navajo language). Subscribe and learn more and enjoy more. Hugs. Navajo Grandma
Ive 2nd mother that has passed away the prayer she said is father god may your stirring basket be filled may it never want or quench for nothing and you cup your hands during a prayer rites ritual you dont close it to receive your blessing i dont remember the song but the bundle represents home hearth and it is hung behind or above the door it wards off evil...she was guyanese. It was blessings and thank you for your wisdom see you next time
Kamala what a beautiful rendition you gave of this. How beautiful. You need to write it all down, save it, share it. How just beautiful and exactly what the stirring sticks are about. Hugs to you sweetheart from your Grandma.
Knowing these things reminds me what a blessing it is to have the nourishment we have. It's not just food, but something powerful and special. And to have something like this in a home would be such an honor and reminder. Thank you for sharing this video with us, Abuela. Always learning something new ❤
I tell you I have the best subscribers, sometimes you all make me feel like crying with gratitude that you are understanding and learning while you watch grandma's videos. Hugs to you. Navajo Grandma
I am like that too. Anytime we would drop our food my grandma would say, "oh hunger just grabbed your food but they have no teeth, no way to eat but they just make you drop your food." I never knew what she meant until I grew up more so. Now when I drop food I always hear her say the hungry people did it to try to eat it and they can't. LOL! Thanks for watching and appreciating. Hugs. Navajo Grandma
@@NavajoGrandma Dine Grandma, you're welcome, and I do try to be a nice and respectful person most of the time, because it feels much better than being or having a negative attitude towards people, and "things" animals, even plants. I enjoy your videos, and have been learning basic Dine language online and wish I could learn it more and better! (Learn to pronounce Dine words correctly.) I don't know why but I like the language, maybe because it's so different from English language. I wait to watch more of your videos, and Blessings, love and happiness to you!
Thank you for watching and seeing that these stirring sticks are the wealth, the strength, the honor, the virtue of a woman who cares for her home and also defends it from evil. If I saw Satan I would swat him to bits with these stirring sticks and remove his awful butt out of my way. I pray we always remove him from our lives. Please pray always and bless you for always being so kind to Navajo Grandma
Well Janice on this channel you are not an orphan, you are my grandchild and I send my hugs to you. Keep watching, hope you have subscribed. Enjoy learning my Dine' culture and hopefully it is yours as well. Hugs. Navajo Grandma

@@NavajoGrandmaI haven't forgotten the value of a Grandmother . I've learned as a child that the most powerful force in the Universe is a women . I shall never forget that . Merci...
Thank YOU, 'Grandma', for teaching us! I am so grateful! You help me to connect with my heritage... I have a better understanding of stirring sticks, now!
What kind words of Hozho always coming from you. I hope you are doing well and thank you again for watching this video. Glad you appreciate my videos. Hugs. Navajo Grandma
Hi 👋 Navajo Grandma! Loved this video. Me and my little watched together. She loves repeating the dinè words after you. She feels so proud, so cute! She says "grandpa says that" and says Hágoónee'. Thank you for your wisdom 🙏 😊
Yaateeh shi yazh, my grandson, and my tso-ke, my grandchildren. Thank you for taking the time to watch and allow the little ones to learn from Grandma. Keep up the great work. Navajo Grandma Hagoonee.
I love when you said " listen to the elderly, they are wonderful and precious". I so miss the stories and wisdom of my beloved people that have passed on.
Laura Ellen, thank you for your sweet heart that misses your beloved people. Now the idea here is, you write down who these people were, what were their characteristics, why were they your loved ones, what were their stories, what did they cook, how did they cook, why do you miss them. There is so much to write and as you do this, your heart will become strong, they will fill your heart with love, comfort and strength in remembering them. You need to find comfort in them through remembering them. They are alive in the spirit world. You will see them again. I promise. Now you have a lot to do and share it all with grandma. I am here. Hugs. Navajo Grandma
Well, there is more to come. I love my culture and love the teachings of my ancestors and grandparents and parents. Think of how amazing your story is. We all have a story with our culture no matter who. Hugs. Navajo Grandma
Kellie, I am glad you now know why these were on her wall. The symbolism is strong and truly a woman's shaft of arrows against hunger. Wonderful Aunt Mary Louise. Hugs. Navajo Grandma
We all miss our grandparents, nothing can replace them but the memories, we need to write and to tell our stories of our lives with them. In that they will remain in your heart and you will realize who wise they were. Hugs. Navajo Grandma Auntie
Thank you for sharing your knowledge 💥 These videos are a treasure that will be used forever to learn the ways of the Navaho. As Grandmother, you know what is right and fair. You are extremely generous to care and give of your time and knowledge. God Bless you and yours forever.💧💧💦💦💦🌧🌧🌧🌧💦💦💦💦
Not everyone sees it that way, like some of my people, but we are praising the Holy People by what is being shared, the real truths and hope and love. Navajo Grandma
This makes me feel so whole. My Great Grandmother was Native American and I've never been told anything about her culture. I've always felt drawn to nature and living a peaceful life. This gives me a better understanding of a whole other side of me. I would love to stay on a reservation for a while to really connect with the people and learn about some of the Native American culture.
My prayer is that one day, I can purchase a home in the hills or close to the mountains with a lot of land and build my cabin, I already have the blue prints. I want to have acreage for all the plants that I have need for, then build hogans and a work and learning place where I can have people come and stay for a week and experience this in the raw. No phones, tv, etc. Pure silence, a complete detachment from the world. What a refining and refreshing life to remember when you leave. That each would strive to be whole, live life with more strength and through the experience appreciate what they have and who they are. To remain strong in whatever circumstances they are dealt. Praying always. I feel like that is coming. Its finding the ideal place, but there is no ideal place, I talk to myself and tell myself, "you make the ideal place." So that is my own answer. Thank you for your comment. Keep watching and learning. Hugs. Navajo Grandma
@@NavajoGrandma , I will put your intentions out as prayers, and try to help. That sounds like a wonderful plan to create positive change in a world increasingly populated by more people who don't know how to connect with the world outside, not even their own homes. I have had friends over the years, that when I would pause to examine a flower, or the spiral of a pinecone, would honestly be baffled as to why I put my energy toward plants and nature. Not judging, but if you can't appreciate the blessing all around you, then maybe an interior journey should be started. That's why I love your videos; you connect people to more than your culture.
@@savaialaddams6273 Again, what can I say, you spoke with the tongue of angels. I just love the way you express yourself. How wonderful and pure. Thank you and love your comments. Navajo Grandma
@@savaialaddams6273 You, have a wonderful heart and spirit. You are wonderful and thank you for commenting. I so enjoyed the real truth from your heart and soul. That is what grandma loves and what grandma is made of. You need to be real, genuine and full of truth. Our Creator is one you can't lie to and just keep living your life as you desire with the goodness you have, do not allow others to change that. You are perfect. Love you so. Navajo Grandma
It really is! The set is to be handed down from grandma's to their posterity, but I use to say what happens when there are 25 grandchildren like I have and more great grandchildren. But yes, it is gorgeous. We will make a video of them during the summer. Maybe then we will harvest some and sell some to you. Right now other people sell these at incredible prices that grandma won't charge. Let wait and see about this video. Hugs
Hope you are feeling better and praying for you and your out patient situation. Remain prayerful and strong. You are important in this life. Hugs always. Navajo Grandma

Hi grandma. Sorry you havent heard from me in awhile. Ive been busy with doctor appointments and going to pt. I have to use a walker. I am catching up on your videos. This was a great teaching and a blessing. I wish our culture had this teaching. I too dont believe in being lazy and work hard for my family to keep us out of poverty. I have missed you grandma and i look forward to more videos.
Sarah, my granddaughter, I hope you are doing better. I wondered what happened to you and your sweet comments. Grandma's prayers are with you in whatever you are going through. Hugs galore. I am glad you are catching up with the videos and I can't even believe you would know what being lazy is. You are a blessing. I have missed you too Sarah. Keep up the good work, heal and whatever else. Hugs from your Grandma
Well grandma, even if you are a grandma, I am now your grandma. You are always commenting so kindly. Sending you a Happy Valentines Day. Thank you for being you. Hugs. Navajo Grandma
Seeing the stirring sticks made me want to run and hide! As a kid in the early-70s, my grandma used to make me stir her large tub of Navajo cake batter ( Al kaa?). This was hard work. Those sticks were hard to grasp and each one would reorient itself as it was moved through the batter. When completed, she'd slice up the cake and would drag me along to sell at the flea markets in Shiprock, Aztec, or Gallup these were the days when like only 5 pickups made up the flea market. Just park, drop the tailgate and start selling. Thanks for this video. It made me think of my grandmother.
So you know how to make the Navajo cake huh? You should make a video one day and show us. I know exactly what you mean. I only helped one time as the girl who had this had to help and no one else. At least that is how they did this on our rez in the Eastern Agency. Although you may not have liked doing this, you have great memories and now that grandma is gone or away, something in this experience still calls home to your heart. Remember that. Someday soon too, take a pen and paper and write about it, sketch it out with your pencil. A good memory that brings happiness really. Hugs. Navajo Grandma
Love you Grandma and thank you for sharing with your heart. Gave me tears knowing how powerful our Mothers from all over are still thriving. & loving life and living it to the best. Hai hai for this channel and the time you give. It’s precious

I am grateful to you for sharing your story and your culture with me and the rest of the world. My grandmothers are no longer with me, I miss all of my grandparents and their wisdom. I am happy to be your honorary grandkid. Thank you so much again!
You are so welcome and I have to say where do these amazing sweet ones come from? You are so kind to speak such Hozho to grandma. It is you I need to be thanking as if you did not subscribe, grandma wouldn't exist. Thus we do compliment each other and yes, I don't mind being your proxy grandma while yours are temporarily in heaven. Hugs. Navajo Grandma
Beautiful story❣️ I had to laugh when you talked about being whacked with them for being lazy as a kid. I remember the big wall hanging spoon and fork were my mom’s weapon of choice. 😲 love your videos. 🤗
Isn't it amazing how CREATIVE our mothers were!! Whatever was close and her temper raged, whack!! Ouch and boy did we instantly become obedient. Yup!! you made me laugh abt the handing spoon and fork, they were wooden and within reach LOL!! I use to look at them and think, here they are hanging so innocently. If they could only talk and scream out. hahaha. Great comment!! Hugs from Navajo Grandma
Grandma your a frantic teacher the children could learn a lot the sticks could used for anything any oil could clean the sticks with a dry pepper towel the sticks can disaplene you if you don't listen
Thank you so much for sharing and teaching all that you do. Its sooo important. Have a great respect and love of Dine culture. Wishing you abundant blessings and prayers. 🙂

It sure is wonderful to be taught about the stirring sticks. I respect all of the teachings my Bizhi taught me. Makes such sense now. Hugs and thank you for subscribing, without you, grandma wouldn't exist. You are so important. Navajo Grandma
Navajo Grandma, such a lovely lady so wise and confident. So beautiful is the telling of the stories you share with the young ones of your peoples. With respect and honor the reverence to prayers the purpose amd meaning all surrounded with the importance on family handing down the traditions as you learned them. I find this video very sweet as you share you ate truly a lovely lady thank you. I grew up in Colorado I live now in CA, I am watching many different videos of the Navajo Dine peoples and find that culture and love of life confident and just living with morals and wisdom that are universal I am feeling the southern border area of Colorado east of Durango is where I am heading to rest out my senior years and play music and be filled with joy prospering in peace knowinh love is all that matters. Thank You Grandma I believ I will be spending near your people and living in unity with them listening and learning as the journey takes me. Be blessed you have blessed me with this little story today my heart is light and peaceful I can imagine hearing this story around a campfire at night woth family all around. That thought is very nice.
Doug what beautiful words you always give to me of Hozho. Beauty, Balance, Peace and Harmony. That is how life should be and used to be in the lives of tribal members and in my childhood. I love that area you are talking about. When I refer to the rural area in the city where my family moved to and we were the first Dine' family there, we moved to Cedar Hills, just as you leave Aztec, NM, going towards Durango. A lovely area, where Chogo our Palomino Stallion took us all over those hills while white folks shot at us. Just little kids and a horse. You will live out a beautiful life there and what scenery, waking up in a Postage Picture Card. Thank you for your kinds words. If you can keep watching and learning. Hugs. Navajo Grandma
Well Bb Bb, yes, you are all included. I love each of my grandchildren and you are one of them. I pray I set a good example for you that you know your significance, to teach you truth, and what I understand, I am not perfect, but I do know one thing, we are all family and need to care for each other and know our value is beyond the stars and most to teach each other and be teachable. Write your stories, treasure them, know your values, this will help you through life. Hugs. Grandma
My mom had these and at her funeral someone took them I have always wanted them where could I get some I have looked everywhere but could not remember the name of them but when they take you away from your family when you are young it’s hard to remember stuff... Enjoy your teachings I am learning from you and telling my grandchildren where I come from now
Roselee you are precious. I am sorry you don't have the stirring sticks. I have 3 daughters and each of them want mine, but they have their own. I know these are seasonal, and there are those who want to buy some, I will make that a priority to try to get some and or refer you. I should go make them myself. Its done with much prayer. I will let you know. Keep reminding me during the spring. Love you. Navajo Grandma
I think of many things as beings, but never hunger or laziness. I appreciate this new perspective. And GRANDMA?! 7 children wow you are divine. I have one, she's just 3 years old... I would so appreciate a video on your thoughts about how to raise children, how to mother with an open heart. I grew up in foster care and some days I feel so lost, I can't reach back in my head for an example of the right things to do, I wish I had a foundation of wisdom to work from. So anyway, if you would ever want to share more on your thoughts on children and raising them, I would love that. Love you, big hugs from me to you
Christina my sweetheart, YES YES YES, how I have not even given this a thought and yes grandma definitely will. I am in the throws of continuing the wool processing so as soon as that is done I will get on that video. Love you so much and welcome to grandma's fire of learning and praying your protection from the world, sickness, sadness, loneliness and all things that are negatives. I bless you with strength, wisdom beyond your years and imagination to feel with your heart that which is right in teaching your little one. That all that love of God will surround you and that you will remember His love that it will shine through your entire body and move into the hearts and minds and spirits of all who are around you especially little one. Hugs. Navajo Grandma
You did the ceremony. How awesome. I never did as I was a long distant runner and the old lady never came to me. I think that’s what they say. Maturity. I had had 7 children before this thing happened a few times and then never again. Doctors say women who are physically active usually either do or don’t. Thus my Bizhi handed one of her stirring sticks (Adistsiin) down to me. Navajo Grandma
The way you're holding the 'adist si in' at 9:25 is such a powerful image. Thank you Grandma for sharing your knowledge and wisdom. Also, your turquoise jewelry is so beautiful.
How else would you hold your armor my dear? Thank you for watching and yes, my husband bought me that big chunk for Christmas right before he had his stroke. We lived thru it and still living thru it. Sad but wonderful memories. He is walking with me, he is now sleeping next to me, I missed him and visited him every second almost at the hospital. What a fascinating thing it was to watch this. A valuable piece of women's teachings that I took to heart. I mean, it is a ceremonial weapon while being a practical tool. I might have to watch this a few more times just to get the full weight of it, Grandma, but I loved every second.
Thank you for watching and thank you for your wonderful comment. It makes grandma happy when you are teachable and love to learn. This is the way of the Dine'. Happy to share. Hugs. Navajo Grandma

Hannah, it is true, the wisdom within the teachings of our ancestors is the Teachings of Hozho, "beauty, peace, balance and Harmony." The Teaching of Ke', loving one another, serving, yes and being kind to all for they are created in the image of God. How precious to see your vision as such daily. Grandma, I just awoke from a nap. I had a bad dream. In it, I spoke to my beloved soulmate, to whom I, for no real reason at all, have been estranged and left here alone in the desert, and he rejected me. We were visiting my friend Sharon who was in the hospital. She was sick with flu. She had scabs and markings on her face. I asked if she had the covid disease. She said no. Some other things were said and happened in the dream that I cant now recall. Then, she too rejected me. I felt my heart plunge as it was crushed by emotion. I felt rejected by the four directions of the universe. I wanted to annihilate myself completely, but as the tears of fear and anger arose within me and I felt my face warm with the flush red-blushing of both rage and desperation--I awoke. Thank God. I felt as if I couldn't get out of bed so.depressed. So I reached for my phone and your loving reply was there. Thank you.🌹. I'm going for my usual walk and will look for your post and the giveaway later throughout the day. Much 💘. Thank you for being there grandma.

Seven is a holy figure in our culture too, "Buch mit sieben Siegeln" "Sieben Tage" "Sieben Weltwunder" "Sieben Todsünden/Tugenden" "Sieben Künste" "Siebter Sinn" "Siebengebirge" "Siebenbürgen" "Siebengestirn" And a lot of fairy tales with the number seven ...
