You realize if that were the actual case, then people would just switch over to another form of trade/currency, right? What's a Euro worth in America? What's an American dollar worth in China? Probably the same as gold was worth to Native Americans when those crazy Spaniards came and saw them dumping it into the local lake (falsely believing that they had more gold than they could ever want, which created the myth of El Dorodo in the first place), but then, ironically threw away huge deposits of platinum... because it wasn't gold. Do you get what I'm saying here? And if you don't, look up that one episode of Recess where "stickers" were a currency.
@leejerrett8268
@leejerrett8268 2 месяца назад
He said _wealth_ not currency; Stocks, bonds and deeds generate a stream of passive income but they are illiquid, meaning they have to first be sold if you want to convert their market value into cash. Because almost all of a wealthy person’s money is typically immediately invested into buying more financial instruments their actual supply of _money_ at any given moment will necessarily be a tiny fraction of their total market value. Have you heard the term ‘cash poor but asset rich’?

This is why I don't mind dragons being corporate CEOs in Shadowrun. All that timeless wisdom would deffo let them chicken dinner themselves into a CEO position and keep every single bit of net value they can.

So the dragons would basically destroy the economy because they would just withdraw more and more money out of the circulation. wouldn't timeless wisdom be an obstacle to become a corporate CEO? @Drekromancer

@@aleph0540 I see your legitimate legal objection, and I raise you this: When an IRS Wizard casts Liquidate Asset, he literally melts down the asset into a mound of gold pieces equal to the presently assessed value of the asset. Properties gently collapse into vast piles of gold, while stock assets magically disappear off of the screens that display their value and get exuded from the screens in a shower of gold coins. Would this still be illegal? Probably. But it's a hell of a lot more fun.
@Drekromancer

For clarity: they'd only send the IRS Wizard when they were ready to foreclose. So the IRS Wizard comes with an ultimatum: sign on the dotted line, or I will literally melt all of your assets into a puddle. That seems like an offer they couldn't refuse. 😎

Just a quick explanation on why things like stocks aren't taxable. It's because the value is not set. You theoretically pay taxes on them after you sell or otherwise collect the value, but at no time while they are fluctuating in value, however there are ways of getting around this, but that is *why* the law functions the way it is. Instead of stocks let's instead go with physical property, since this is much closer on how the law treats it. You buy a painting at ten dollars from a street painter. He becomes famous and his paintings are in high demand now, and your painting is worth ten million dollars, and you will own nothing to the IRS because of it. You don't pay taxes on it because it appreciated in value. You pay taxes when you sell it, converting it into liquid funds.

Stock market drawdowns are not that uncommon, but it lives long enough that it won't be in a hurry to sell. Recessions last a couple of years. What does a 30% temporary drawdown matter when the average real return of S&P 500 has been 10% since 1957? It matters if you retire and need the money right damned now, but it doesn't if you're young... or a dragon.

"Dragons steal gold and jewels, you know, from men and elves and dwarves, wherever they can find them; they guard their plunder as long as they live (which is practically forever, unless they are killed), and never enjoy a brass ring of it. Indeed they hardly know a good bit of work from a bad, though they usually have a good notion of the current market value; and they can’t make a thing for themselves, not even mend a little loose scale of their armour." -J.R.R. Tolkien, _The Hobbit_

In other words, dragons as greedy billionaires who stake their lives on the stock market and only care about wealth for the status it brings is exactly what the author was going for in the most famous modern dragon story.

But he's going to be paying way more in taxes after on those capital gains. And not to mention the taxes he paid when he first got the money to invest.

That's why capital gains tax is lower, to help the poor poor billionaires. Then you donate to your own non-profit, which uses those tax-deductible donations to maintain your three yachts, etc.

Technically Capital Gains are lower than typical income tax-which you want them to be if you want people to invest money into the market.

It wouldn't make much sense to tax capital gains more because then no one is ever going to have an incentive to invest

Why? If you never sell your stocks you can never get the money and spend it. The best you can do is borrow money against your stock in which case you end up paying interest.
