I have been trying to get my hands on a Sony CRF-320 radio receiver for ages, with no luck, mainly due to the very high prices that they go for. This radio is a work of art in terms of performance and mechanical design, so obviously it is a challenge that I itched for.
A friend of mine made my day when he said he'd got one that needed some serious attention, and wanted to know if I was up for the task.
Now restoring this radio is not for the absolute novice. However, there are some really good videos on RU-vid that show how others have tackled the project. Two notable videos served as a reference source for me, and I would like to thank their creators for their work, and link them here for your reference, and as recognition for their work:
Mr. Carlson's Lab: • SONY CRF-320 Receiver ...
The Radio Shop: • #108 Sony CRF 320 Repair
Join me on this project, and let's see if it lives up to its hype. I certainly hope so.
Enjoy the video.

First let me say thank you for the honorable mention! Very much appreciate the kind words. Second, I will say do not sale yourself short. You have produced some really amazing videos on electronic repair and do a great job in the process. I enjoy every video you post. But let me say this, I almost did not post my video on the repair of the Sony due to Paul's video. Did not want folks to think I was trying to copy Mr. Calson. I surely do not compare my level of knowledge to his as I am just a dumb old country boy. Now you have jumped in on a radio that can be a bit intimidating. The way these things are built are a bit nightmare. However, as you see you have already sorted out a few hurdles. And I am very confident you will have this unit working like new. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.

The mention was my pleasure. I owe you and Paul a huge thank you for your imparted knowledge. Both videos gave me the courage to take on this project. I know what I knows, but more importantly, I also know what I don’t know 😊 This radio is a first for me, and without any prior experience with it, it did scare me a bit 😊 Fortunately I think it’ll be OK. As for “copying” another channel, I’ve found that this community is incredibly close and supportive. I believe in mentioning other channels as it just serves to make the community even more united.

Hi Buddy. If you’ve seen my latest video on the crf320, you’ll have seen that the SW is still acting up. I now have SW but it isn’t stable - it’ll work for a while on some MHz ranges, and not on others. Then it’ll jump again to become active on other ranges. I’ve also had a test signal going in at 3.6MHz but coming through at 4.6Mhz on the dial. Could really use some advise if you’ve got the time. Thanks.

Hi! Do you know (or does one of your faithful viewers know) where I can find the schematics to a Quadraflex 979 stereo receiver system? I have a bad channel on one side. Thanks for all your help and for these great videos! I really enjoy how you approach the trouble shooting and repair of different electronic units. Great job!! Thanks so much!

Manuel, What an incredibly complicated thus scary looking radio, my first reaction is I'd rather have a crystal set. I have total confidence that you will succeed at restore this receiver for your British friend. Your time management skills must be incredible, family, work, restoration hobby, 3-D printing. P.S. has your wife at done any projects with the 3-D printer? any cat toys
@electronicsoldandnew
@electronicsoldandnew 9 месяцев назад
The time management issue has been commented on (by my wife 😊) fortunately the 3D printing is something that goes on in the background, and I’ve come to accept the printer noise as normal 😊

What I read is that the gear plastic (I don't think it is nylon, nylon is really strong) it shrinks with age, and the steal axle won't give in to that so it breaks. A methode is to make a small ditch at the edge of the gear against the ridge, and use a good quality thin polyester sewing thread, and wind it 1or 2 or 3 times. Just before knotting it, apply (soak the thread in) epoxy.
@tarstarkusz
@tarstarkusz 9 месяцев назад
You should glue one of the original gears back together and then mold it and pour copies using the mold and plastic resin. 3d printing such small parts risks having to do it all over again. You also don't have to do it 20 times to get one good one. So long as you can get one of the originals back to the right shape, every copy will be perfect. You can get some very strong resins.

Seems a real challenge but worth it. With your logical approach and people like Paul Carlson out there AND the radio repair community I'm sure the end result we all want to see will come. And even in the unlikely event it doesn't I'm sure we'll all learn plenty along the way. Looking forward to the next episode. 😊

I watched Mr Carlson's restoration about 3 years ago, it was one of the first electronics restorations I watched and you are right, that was a wizard working on something wizards made. You are also right that all of these restorations are welcome and highly informative, I'd love to have learned to repair electronics. Looking forward to the progress on this. Also with the advent of 3D printing it looks like many older parts may now be replaceable at home.

I feel your pain. I bought a ICF6800, AM/FM were fine, but SW wasn’t working. Upon opening I found that parts were missing; I had to make a bracket for the SW band selector. Good luck. I’ve enjoyed your videos, and they have been a great help on my Grundig Satellits

Excellent!!! I was not at all expecting one of these to come up!!! A delight!! Very much looking forward to this series. For a while I had an eye out for one of these but they are really expensive (and often beaten up) so they kind of dropped off my radar. Even the ones that look like they have been fished out of a nearby swamp go for huge piles of cash so I concluded that getting one is unlikely. But, I will nevertheless enjoy watching how you get on with this!! 😊 The start of this was slightly reminiscent of the Braun T1000CD you did where some idiot had done some seriously bad meddling. This one seems fiddled with but not quite as bad at this stage. Vamos ver!! 😁
@electronicsoldandnew
@electronicsoldandnew 9 месяцев назад
Yes, really expensive sets. I too thought back to the Braun as soon as I saw the insides 😊 I think someone tried his best here but then gave up and plugged things in any which way just to close it up. I’m now hopeful that this will really work out nicely. Just worried about the antenas. They are really rare.

That's a very nice set. I actually have a CRF 330K, the one with the built in tape recorder, along with a 320 , and a 320 parts set. The 330 sits on my display shelf, working sort of ok, but waiting for my attention. Right now that's being occupied by a particularly stubborn Telefunken Opus 9 that refuses to behave itself. But one of these days I'll get to the Sony's. They came from a period when Sony was truly at the height of their radio game, and I was lucky to be an employee of the company at the time. I'll be watching your videos on this with great interest. Good luck..you'll need it! 😱 It truly is the beast with way too many transistors....93 to be exact.
@electronicsoldandnew
@electronicsoldandnew 9 месяцев назад
Wow. I hadn’t even realised that they had so many transistors. A long way from the proudly advertised “6 transistor” sets that came out in the beginning of the transistor era.

Nothing worse than when someone else has had a go at a radio and stuffed it up! I doubt that it worked after they finished with it. It looks as if they gave up and just roughly threw it back together. Probably a good thing that you didn't video much of it. It would have had me climbing the walls! Anyway I'm confident that you will have the short wave working with or without Mr. Carlson's help. Looking forward to the next part! Merry Christmas to you and yours.

What a beast! Good luck with this one Manuel 👍 I have printed gears for receivers as well. They ABS seems pretty tough so if there no restriction when turning I imagine they will last for a long time. The ones I made I printed a few extra and gave to the owners just in case. You were lucky to find an STL for yours on the web 😀
@electronicsoldandnew
@electronicsoldandnew 9 месяцев назад
I agree that the ABS seems strong enough. I will definitely print a few spares to go with the radio. Finding the STL was easy. Being able to edit it (the hole was too tight) was the challenge 😊

This was a radio I always wanted. I came across it when I was invited to China Radio International back in 2013. An English guy working there said it hadn't been switched on for many years, but when I saw it you could say I fell in love with it. It has that professional look about it. I've seen several RU-vid guys repairing it and all I can say is, you'll have your brain tested to its limit. That said, I'll be watching you work through this one, for sure.
