The gears on this radio are actually quite easy to reproduce. Sony CRF-320 restoration Pt.3

I want to report to you the progress on this Sony CRF-320 radio receiver, and let me tell you, it's still putting up quite a challenge. Whether it's my own learning curve with this device or the aftermath of previous tinkering, the Shortwave seems to be in a stubborn slumber.
But, in the face of this mystery, I decided to take a different path. I delved into something within my grasp: the gears. Thanks to my newfound interest in 3D printing, I ventured to recreate the worn-out plastic gear on the SW dial. Surprisingly, my humble 3D printer delivered, and I found myself navigating Fusion 360 to craft it from scratch-a satisfying feat, to say the least.
Why all this diversion? It's an invitation for your input. As I tackle this puzzle, I welcome your suggestions on how to pinpoint this maddening fault.
And before we plunge in, a heartfelt Happy New Year to you all.
I will again reference the two videos on this radio that have been invaluable to me so far:

Please don't let any negative comments by a disgruntled viewer affect the great educational work you are doing. Your videos and your inventions have greatly improved the enjoyment I get out of this radio and electronics hobby. I am sure it is doing the same for thousands of others.

Some people really have too much time on their hands. I've never found anything you have done fraudulent in any way. In fact, Iv'e found your information, and designs, to be helpful and pretty darn accurate. The ones that are saying the opposite are either not following instructions correctly or do not understand what your designs are for. Any time you have made a mistake, you have always been upfront and honest about your mistakes. That is one of the things I really love about you and your videos. You admit if things are not quite how you initially expected. Keep up the fantastic work, and please know that those that aim to discredit you are a very small majority and likely are just jealous of your abilities.

Dear Manuel, thank you for sharing another stage in your journey of learning. Please don't let mean idiots discourage you. Your videos are among the most educational in this field. I think the secret is that you are sharing your findings, successes and mistakes and taking us along for the ride. You say that a restoration is an adventure and it feels like we are going on these adventures with you. This style and your (unwarranted) humbleness makes you and your content really approachable. I personally am grateful, and I think most of your veiwers feel the same, for broadening our knwledge in such an entertaining way. I wish you good health and lots of fun for a 2024 full of beautiful radios, succesful restoration marvels and inspiring projects!

Thank you for your kind words. This channel was intended to give others a look at what I do, and mistakes are often part of that procedure 😊 From the feedback I get, most viewers do seem to appreciate it for what it is. And unfortunately, there are always the exceptions, But they are so few that I really do not let them affect me much.

Well, in Dutch we have a saying which goes a bit like "tall trees catch a lot of wind". Meaning: the more respectable and prestigious you become, the more critics you attract. It seems to be a normal phenomenon. Good that you just shrug it off and continue doing your thing. Anyways: a happy new year and I'm looking forward to all the amazing restoration videos from your channel in 2024! 👍

Manuel, you are a good man and doing good things. In no way do you come across as anything but helpful and unselfish. Your contributions to the community of electronics nerds and vintage radio enthusiasts is solid and building. Someone trying to tear you down is because they are not even in the running. In fact likely not even out the starting gate. Their ego convinces them they are at the finish line and if they see anyone in the race they must convince them they have lost. There is an epidemic of selfishness in the world, like they belong in the marvel universe and have superpowers. The power to spew toxic venom is nothing more than the impotence of realizing someone has a little magic compared to their tractionless attempts going nowhere. You got that radio magic and are turning into a real wizard. ✨️

Well... Where to start? Great job on the gear, it fits like a glove. I think the printed gears are tougher than the nylon used in the original production and will last a lifetime. Also thanks for the run through on 360. I started with that but a few days after I installed it they cut back the free version until it was unusable for me. They may have backed off a bit or I overreacted. I'll give it another go. As for detractors... I, and I assume you as well get thumbs down on YT (that number now deleted from view). I never understood it, if you don't like the material then don't watch it! If there is a major boner in the information, say so in the comments so it can be corrected. Probably not required in your presentations but very much so in mine. Cheers Manuel and all the best for the coming year.

I believe the fusion 360 cutback was reversed. I think I read something about that. All I know is that this version is perfectly fine for me at this stage. As for the feedback issue- I don’t care about thumbs-down. I don’t even look at that. This case was a flurry of emails starting at around 2 in the morning, and getting progressively agro and dumb. At first my reaction was amusement.

Excellent design work! This is coming from someone who’s been in the mechanical design field for 20+ years. The tool I have the most experience with is called Creo by PTC. I’m definitely going to give this Fusion 360 a try in the near future. I’m thinking about getting my first 3D printer soon to make replacement parts for my antique/vintage electronics repair & restoration hobby. I may even try documenting a future project on RU-vid just in case others find it interesting or helpful. Keep up the great work!

I wonder why SONY didn't use the AN612 as the first mixer and also in the FM front end and you could just use crystal filters and lose a lot of the IF transformers and possibly simplify the main circuit board.
@radio-ged4626
@radio-ged4626 6 месяцев назад
So, as far as you can tell you don't have any excessive current draw and the lower voltage readings were down to a dodgy chassis grounding point? I wonder how much of the problems are just bad connections? My gut feeling is that's a large part of the problems with this radio. The Fusion software is brilliant, so simple to use compared to other CAD software I've seen. Great result with that gear. I hope you get to the bottom of this, you've put a lot of effort in so far. Happy new year to you and yours Manuel.

I agree that connections may be a major issue here. As someone obviously took this thing apart, I would not be surprised if some connections have been stressed to the point of failing. I've got a LOT of checking to do :)

OEM Sony manuals are updated with add in pages. Trouble is most didnt bother filing them. Most are minor things but especially TV's from the 70' s. they can have major changes & sometimes even a totally different chassii for the same model ##. Keep that in mind for SM's. You often need model, chassis & serial ##'s to get the right thing. Good luck.

Very good progress, impressed by the CAD and 3D printing. I'm sure you have fixed everything by now (as an aside Q231, the switching driver is controlled by Q1023, Q1024 muting and those switches do look a bit dodgy). I don't think working on a radio could be classed as armed conflict, so is not exposing your mercenarism tendencies, even if you are being paid.
@electronicsoldandnew
@electronicsoldandnew 6 месяцев назад
😊 I have too much fun to worry too much about armed responses from the few who like attempting it. I’ve followed the signal back to the transistors you mention, and no luck yet. The switching comes next.

Wow! It's exciting to watch your skillset grow, now including 3d printing! A great tool in the arsenal of any radio restorer (maybe a boon for those wanting to replace those missing knobs on Bakelite radios) - I'm sure you're not far off 3d scanning too. I'm not normally keen on portable transistor radio restorations (unless of course it was made in the '60s and it's full of germanium semiconductors, carbon resistors and ceramic caps!) but this thing defies belief! Is this made to mil/laboratory spec or something? Why didn't they make their hifi gear this good? (Well, they did, some of them but they were totally unaffordable...). Anyway, wishing you a happy new year 2024 (you still have a good few hours to go compared to us here)!
@electronicsoldandnew

The 3-D printing has indeed become extremely useful for me. As for the build quality, I agree that very few later devices could match something like this.
@Stelios.Posantzis
@Stelios.Posantzis 6 месяцев назад
I wonder how much that would cost back in the day - compared to lab instruments of the same calibre -@@electronicsoldandnew . Since you're thriving at the 3d printing end, you should also check out various methods of finishing parts (e.g. if you want to make a replacement for say stuff like a broken corner etc.) or various metal paints (chrome, black chrome, tinted etc.) for the fake nickel plating decorations.

Hi Manuel. I am not, by any standards, an expert in Fusion 360. When you create a new sketch, you create a brand new world, so that a good practice is to include the geometry of the existing model up to that point in time that you need to elaborate on, by explicitly importing or projecting it onto the new script plane. You did not need to do so, because it's just the origin you share, which is on the default grid, so that matching its position is easy. Should it have been a different point, not matching a grid node, your sketch would have been slightly out of synch. Like you I've started 3D printing, and 3D modelling just by doing, learning the features just in time, when I first encountered the issue. This one bothered me sometimes before I discovered the best practice about it. There are just two other rules that I found useful to know : 1) Always start with a component : For complex designs, it's critical, because it'll package the sketches into the component folder. 2) Rename important items or name important parameters. There will be a moment where you need to refactor some feature and don't remember which sketch addresses it. This is where those rules will help ! Cheers, keep the good stuff coming to your bench and to our screens, and best wishes for 2024, for you and those for who you care !
