@@BallsAnimal he saw a little for research. I pointed him in that direction. I agree with you, I was absolutely shocked by how much I liked the Harley Quinn show. It's fantastic and more people should watch it.
I don't think people realize how significant the Animated Series was. I religiously watched it as kid, and really only fully grasped how freaking original and unique it was as I got older. It was way beyond its time.
Not sure a glass of domestic abuse would go over well. I wish her relationship with Ivy was made fully canon because it’s much healthier and helps develops her more.
To be fair Battsy giving his super exclusive vacation to the butler was pretty awesome of him. At the time he had no idea it was a trap. I mean Rich dudes get sent free "come try my thing and brag about it" stuff all the time so he wasn't picking up on how suspicious this was at all. He was literally just trying to be nice to his Butler
Oh, I made absolutely sure to emphasize this part to Greg. He wasn't even gonna mention that Bruce didn't know about the slash and burn in the Amazon. I do not share Greg's animosity towards the Bat. But there is little I can do to stop him. He's consumed only by his mad obsession to see the Dark Knight brought to his knees.
@@theamazingari3363 well thank you for reinging him in the best you could. Also but seriously he could have just put poison ivy in the thumbnail and still gotten plenty of clicks
@@angelwhispers2060 You're most welcome. You don't so much reign in Greg as veer him in a less insane direction. From a real-world viewpoint, he's right that Batman would be the worst. But my suspension of disbelief is enough that I enjoy the mythos and that character. I have and will continue to defend Batman's honor against Greg's unyielding and (dare I say?) villainous harrassment.
@@theamazingari3363 he also forgot to mention that batman single handedly poured 10s of millions of dollars into finding a cure for Mr. Freeze and his wife Nora's conditions. See that's what annoys me about batman haters. They cherry pick. Also, Harley Quinn is a victim of circumstance? How?! You mean the very successful doctor who decided to join joker? What circumstance?
@@theamazingari3363 Can only reply to one at a time but you guys mean "rein." You reign over a kingdom, you steer a horse with reins. An easy way to remember is how you spell "reindeer."
One of the details I found most interesting about the animated series is that all of the backgrounds were drawn on black paper, really reinforcing that style
A lot has changed for me. I went from having a crush on a cartoon character, to having a crush on Margot Robbie. Seriously, that was genius casting. She's up there with Downey, Evans, Stewart, McKellen, Bozeman, Reeve, and a few others as perfect casting, right out of the comic book.
Mmm-hmm... I really was hopeful for a sec that the drink's gonna involve him in some way, since H&J is one of the most iconic comicbook couples after all, but ehh. I guess that boring annoying ecoterrorist will have to do 🙄
@@cavecanem1741 No, it's iconic. Iconic because of the exact reason you said. Still a horribly abusive relationship, but iconic doesn't necessarily mean good or moral. Just means a prime example exemplifying the qualities of the subject.... in this case sadly an abusive relationship.
Hi there!! The flower you're using is called baby's breath, and it's actually slightly poisonous! It should be harmless though, aside from a very small chance of nausea. Ultimately extremely fitting for a Poison Ivy drink!
Absolutely! Another great cartoon that walked a fine line and didn't seem to talk down to it's target audience. Far too short lived a show for how amazing it was.
@@ZarniwoopIII Also had the best antagonists. Xanatos was of course in a class of his own, but the second-tier villains like MacBeth and Demona were also amazing (particularly after the multi-parter that revealed their shared origin), and even the supporting baddies had cool designs and personalities (Jackal and Hyena were such gloriously gleeful psychopaths...)
@@GaldirEonai Yeah, there's a reason that David Xanatos is the trope namer for the Xanatos Gambit. It was essentially a given that he would always come out on top, just had to wonder how much of a dent the heroes could make in his plans. The other villains and heroes were nearly all given great stories and it's hard to believe how much they fit into only three years. The writers, cast, and animators were all top tier.
The entire DC animated universe casting was pure perfection. Andrea Romano was brilliant. She knew exactly what to look for to create performances that go beyond iconic & become defining.
One thing I've always loved about Batman is he is just as crazy as his villians are and they all embody some form of obsession. Obsession with chaos, obsession with nature, with hats, and even with justice.
Only sane one in th Penguin. He's bird stuff is a gimmick, not an obsession. He's capable of ignoring it if he has to. There's a reason Penguin gets sent to Blackgate and not Arkham.
@@Ashannon888 In the more recent iterations of the Penguin, absolutely. Go back the the old Adam West Batman and everything the Penguin did revolved around birds but if course that show was gloriously ridiculous.
You had me at "cucumber". I wish more folks appreciated how good it is as an ingredient in drinks, alcoholic and otherwise. It's super refreshing when cold and as an extra bonus, only adds a handful of Calories to whatever you're making with it. I make cucumber lime drinks with club soda and plain vodka or gin as a chill-down drink in the summer. Not sure what you'd call that, but I sure like it!
I think my favorite part was when Greg completely misrepresented the character of Batman,he doesn't just automatically default to beating people up, he attempts to reason with them and talk the out their insane megalomaniacal ambitions and they refuse him at every turn (with a few exceptions). Mr. Freeze having a tragic backstory doesn't give him carte blanche to do as pleases destroying peoples lives in the process.
Greg "Pour it in me Plant Mommy.... No don't say that on the internet Greg" Also Greg two seconds Later " I am gonna start with an inch of cucumber, just an inch"
My god, you lived my cartoon clone life. And the cucumber melon thing, you brought back an entire era in seconds. I'm going to reach a bit, were you saying "hellooo nurse" from Tiny Toons about that same time frame?
I've watched a lot of your videos since I first came across your channel (I'm also subscribed with the bell on for all notifications), and I love your videos. I personally find your videos better if I'm also drinking (absolutely no offense to you, because it's almost like I'm drinking along side with you, and you seem like an amazing guy to have a drink or two with, depending on the day). You make a lot of great references and a lot of your jokes/puns are on point with the video you're doing at the time. Keep up the great work man, you're amazing
Ivy's spa episode was my first introduction to her. The Batman villain whose now kinda right. I was one of those girls who loved cucumber melon way back when. The flower is baby's breath. Standard filler
I can't believe you dug deep enough in your research to find The Big O anime. Very few people are aware of that show in my experience, and it's personally one of my favorite anime of all time. Mad props sir.
@@howtodrink Same, and that's exactly right! It was Sunrise studios and some of their subcontractors doing the animation, who at the time were primarily known for the Gundam franchise. The Big O was actually going to have way less giant robots in it originally, but Sunrise and Bandai Visual didn't feel that the show would be profitable enough as it was originally laid out. They felt adding more robots would increase the potential profitability of the show via the toy and figurine market. Thanks so much for responding! Always nice to meet another fan of that anime.
Greg, From HTD: I don't remember what kind of flower this is. Me, a former flower shop employee: Ahh, baby's breath, my mortal enemy, so we meet again...
Batman the animated series was a work of art. The fact that both this series and The Hunchback of Notre Dame weren't marketed for adults is terrible(I'm a comic book writer who loves the uncensored version of Dragon Ball Z). Disney and Warner Brothers could have capitalized on the success of Ghost in the Shell and Akira to market part of the disney rennaisance as adult cartoons. Thank you so much for doing this Craig. Much love.
@@RaptorJesus Really? That gives me hope as an aspiring writer of an adult animated series. TAS actually had someone exclaim "MOTHER!!!" on one episode, and that was an abriveation of what he actually meant.
@@danielgalil5020 Remember the one where Mad Hatter put him in a dream-machine? After Hatter said "This isn't an ordinary dream! What if you're wrong?" Bruce's original response was "Then I'll see you in hell!" That reading almost made it into the final cut of the episode, but some ratings prick decided to err on the side of "caution". However, if you remember, during "Mad Love"(which this episode shows a scene from) they *openly show domestic violence* . It's not cut away from, it's not cleaned up, Joker literally beats Harley and throws her out a window, and all she says is "I guess I didn't get the joke". That's the first time domestic violence was ever shown on an animated program ostensibly for children. This series did *remarkably* adult things, all the damn time. And thanks to Rocksteady, we got to see a fully-realized "full-adult" version of TAS, with the Arkham games.
Rewatched the whole series with my 4 year old recently - it became 'our thing' that if he was good we got to watch one before bedtime stories - and I was shocked by how well it aged and how well it was written/animated/directed (right term for something animated?)/etc. and how it was entertaining to myself, and to my wife who had never seen it previously.
Your referencing of The Big O for a moment in this episode has me wishing for a How to Drink episode dedicated to that series. Memory is foggy but I seem to remember Roger drinking a fair share of cocktails.
This is awesome, Batman: The Animated Series and it's follow up Batman Beyond, were my favorite series to watch as a kid. Although I had to watch the former in obscure rerun times on like three different stations. Thank goodness it's all on one streaming service now.
Although I stopped drinking at the start of the year, due to a new medication, but I still enjoy watching your uploads... and your particular type of enjoyable quirkiness.
A cool fact about the show was that unlike standard animation, all of the drawings/backgrounds/stills and whatnot were all drawn on black paper, which is why a lot of the white is really accentuated; because often it was what the drawing started with.
@@howtodrink black paper, and white pastel pencil crayons as the main source. The acetate is certainly a popular method of old school animation, but it is far from the only kind. I have a bachelor of design specializing in character design and illustration. I've done animations on paper using the special plastic peg board and a light pad to keep accurate; only to go through the painstaking process after all that work to set it all up under the camera rig and individually photograph each frame. Edit: I should also add that in this case it was most likely that the character animations were done on the traditional acetate and the background were all the traditional media mentioned. Haven't looked into specifics of what was specifically done on what, but that's my best guess.
I was 18/19 when BTAS came out. I loved it. And tried to get home to watch every episode. That said I was floored when I found out Mark Hamill was the Joker. Check that the BEST Joker.
YESSSSSSS i have been secretly waiting for a batman the animated series (one of my favorite TV shows- not just cartoons, ever) episode since I started watching
Dude, I tried this, and it's really freaking good. I didn't have the little flower thingies of course, and different tequila, but this drink is really exciting.
My bartender, Kayama-San, made this for me (sub cucumber for passion fruit, his rec since he didn’t have any cucumber on hand) and this was wonderful. Greg, thanks for giving a tired sailor some delightful respites.
we had the DVD set when my brother and I were kids in the 2000s. Catwoman's episode where she had that party was always my favorite. She's just so elegant and classy.
The cucumber cutting techniques gave me a sort of Martha Stewart vibe, which made the evil laughter at the end of the episode seem that much more vicious. Very sinister Martha Stewart!
Diane Duane wrote an episode for the series and is/was friends with a lot of the writers and for that series (as well as Gargoyles) and she oft tells tales that they apparently would submit stuff that was far more objectionable than what they needed in order to divert the censor's attention away from something else they wanted to keep as is.
I am so glad that I was 11 when Batman the Animated series came out. Going back and watching it a few weeks ago with my 4 year old nephew I realized just how slow paced the first few episodes are. I almost felt like I was watching it on slo-motion. It gets much better pacing as the series goes on, if I remember right. But I will have to go back and see...For Science! .....and totally not to fill a childhood memory of a show
The Batman the Animated Series episode "Heart of Ice" won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing in an Animated Series, and is possibly the best episode of any cartoon ever made. Mr Freeze's motivations are so true to life and heart rending; he's a villain that you could imagine actually happening. He wants to save the one he loves and is willing to do so by any means necessary. Never in any cartoon have I sympathized so much with someone who is supposed to be a "bad guy". I highly recommend everyone at least watch that one episode, if not the whole series, because it is just so, so good.
I'm 2:36 in. At 46, Batman the Animated Series was a key part of my late teens. Mask of the Phantasm is a phenomenally good film and worth finding and watching as a snap shot of how good this really was.
This and Gargoyles were great. Gargoyles was pretty good at being as adult of a kid show as they could get away with as well and the things it covered like guns are not toys and such (which had one of the gargoyles very interested in detective movies and such end up stealing their detective friend's gun and using it as a toy only to end up accidentally shooting her) and i recommend it to every adult who has kids, its great fun and also good learning.
It's a great "the plan's finally all coming together" level villain laugh, but you need that idle-villany laugh going on, you know the "I just did something mildly inconvenient" laugh.
Considering Harleys association with mental breakdowns and absinthe's association with Insanity I really would have thought there would have been a drink or two for Harley Quinn that involved absinthe. possibly something Joker inspired that start sweet and ends incredibly bitter. Though I would assume a drink inspired by Harley Quinn herself would probably be sweet, fruity, and Incredibly potent. Possibly with a fun little decoration on top.
Batman is one of the earliest animated episodes which were imported in China. I liked to watch them before I came to the US. The white flower and cucumber garnish are impressed. Thanks for sharing!
now I want him to do a cocktail for every single Batman villain oh and side note who else agrees that Eva Green should play a live-action poison ivy I mean it's in her name
You know Greg idk if it's feasible but it'd be cool to see you do some collabs with local bartenders and derive a new cocktail with them. Love what you do man, keep up the great work.
not a villain, but the Grey Ghost episode is one of the coolest 22 minute cartoon eps ever, and I'd be amazed if you came up with a drink called The Grey Ghost.
When the deer head was moving during the ad I was like WTF!!!! Lol and loved this episode. I hope you do some more comic book show n movie related drinks!!!
This show was probably my first contact with Batman while my sister´s was the 60s Adam West series, a bit anachronistically so. And it is still what I think of when I hear Batman.
