Wow a LOT of comments about how I "have never heard of car jacks." I'm addressing this in the next vlog but yes, I do in fact know what car jacks do/are. And yes, I've used them. In the episode I say, "Cars are made out of pretty strong stuff these days, so grab them in the right place, like Superman on the cover of Action Comics #1..." Look close at the cover -- he's grabbing the car at the jack points. I then say the car might only bend or creak in a way you didn't expect. THAT was my acknowledgement of the issue. I didn't say that picking up a car at the perfect points would destroy it. Hope this clears things up. Thanks for watching! -- KH

Omitting Superman, you're right about pressure. But with Supes i think his unique way of grabbing things is explained by his supercharged bio electric field supplemented by his tactile telekinesis. I may be completely wrong about it all but i think thats how he bypasses the pressure issue. Superman isn't exactly physically strong, but rather an uber psychic. When he comes into contact with something his bio-field, aura, tactile telekinetic power or whatever engulfs the entire object and somewhat applies equal force to it. The more effort he uses, the more even spread the force is applied, which would explain how some super heavy objects deform to some degree but still retain their relative shape as Supes is lifting or pulling them.

My viewpoint of super strength has always been a bit different than this video. The video seems to go with the idea that because your max strength is x times stronger than your min strength must also be x times stronger, but most heroes or characters with super strength show a lece of control suggesting that their max strength is increased, but their min strength is the same as everyone else. From there its all about control (which is something humans learn automatically over time and use). Conclusion: super strength can be super difficult for a new user, but for someone with years of experience living with it then their day to day could be perfectly unaffected. The big danger moments are when startled/spooked. Or if someone with cerebral palsy had it...

@@fermantgg7887 I think it go something like this: because of super durability and invincibility. Only the hand is affected, the rest of the body is left unharmed. Think of it like fighting a guy on the street. You’re not being flung back when you hit him right? Your fist doesn’t hurt when you punch him, it’s the same with super strength. The hero isn’t affected by the aftermath because of his invincibility, so any force applied to him, does nothing, just how Superman cancels out bullets from hitting him. The force instead bounces off.

7:10 This was exactly why Homelander COULDN’T have saved those people on the plane. If he tried to lift it, the more force exerted upwards would exert to him downwards so he needed something to push off of and because of pressure, even if he could of pushed off something to lift the plane, it’s structures would bend and tear apart and he would likely puncture holes through it, making the situation worse cause then people would be falling out the plane. He couldn’t stop it head on like Superman in Superman Returns cause he would’ve gone straight though the nose and make things worse as well. EDIT: Also a similar example is Omni-Man and the subway

the problem is that super strength alone would just get you killed by accident since for super strength, you would need, well, super DURABILITY. because whats the point of being 100, 1000 or even a million times stronger then an average humen when all of your bones shatter immediatly upon impact. now, people would argue that super strength also is super endurance/durability, but i digress. this is also shown in the manga baki, where, the character hanayama kaoru is so strong, he can crush the very fist he makes, he is so strong that his fingers and palm strength start to break his own hand and dig through his flesh, so to utilize super strength, you would need 2 super powers, not one.

I understand what you're saying, however if somebody has super strength I'm sure their bones and tendons would correspond to the strength. I saw someone saying Deku has this problem but that's because he wasn't born with this power, so his body naturally wasn't prepared for this since he's not supposed to have super powers. Just like using steroids you can increase your limit in terms of muscle mass, but your bone and tendon durability doesn't really grow the same as your muscle mass potential so you have imbalance in that department. This is why a lot of bodybuilders injure their tendons first before their muscle, their body simply cannot keep up simply because it's not supposed to.

Homelander if he can do that, must have powers that either bend physics in his favor or he possesses a personal forcefield like Supes that allows him to pick up heavy thingies without them buckling under their weight due to The Wedge Principle and save people at breakneck speeds without them turning into burnt mush due to inertia. From that, I firmly believe that Homelander probably did know the physics but he still was too lazy and apathetic to at least try to save either the plane or the people in it. Plus Homelander’s excuse of having nothing to stand on to lift the plane cuz Maeve and him were in the air is a poor one cuz later in that scene, he is clearly hovering in the air, carrying Maeve.

One explanation I've heard for how Superman is so strong and manages to lift things without them breaking under their own weight (like in _Superman IV_ when he lifts the Statue of Liberty by the arm without it snapping off) is that he has a form of "local telekinesis". Basically, whatever he touches becomes lighter or somehow levitates, so he's not really lifting the full weight. That doesn't really make much more sense than the problems it's trying to explain away, but there you go.

This could all be solved if: 1. You could turn off your strength, realistically this could be something like a slider or a switch you can activate so you can do normal stuff 2. Along with super strength you also are as many times strong as you are tough. This would make your body 100 times heavier most likely, but the strength would even it out. You would also be able to turn this off with the strength so you could be gentle without weighing 20,000 pounds. 3. You're careful to lift heavy objects with both hands, unless it is a wall, where destroying it is the optimal outcome 4. I reckon borrowing ant mans suit to lift things like planes ( so you can spread the pressure more evenly) would be a good idea 5. Just give the bad guys a little shoulder tap so instead of exploding you let them know, they ain't walkin home again

@@ajasen but their bodies are only stronger in certain moves. Plus a strongman is about 2-3 times stronger than the average man. Youd have to be bare minimum 100 times, thats 30-50x stronger than the strongest man alive. Brian shaw talks about how he has to be gentle with things because he breaks them so easy. Now imagine being at least 50x stronger. Yes there are different muscle fibers but the muscle fibers used are relative to your strength level. Like, have two people bench 135. Have one max 225, have another max 450, 135 i light for both, but 135 will always be lighter for the stronger person because his strength level is so much higher. You could use less than 100% of your strength and live a normal life but itd take extreme control. Cause even lightly exerting yourself would be the equivalent of 5000 lbs. Think, imagine how little energy you exert picking up 5-10 lbs. At 100 times stronger you'd be exerting 500lbs of pressure just by moving your arm, thats enough to shatter bones.

He's not assuming that. He basically explained multiple times that you'd have to *constantly* hold back and be *extremely* careful to not break everything and kill everyone you touch. Edit: And like people have already essentially said, it would take an extreme amount of precision and control to use things made for normal people...because the ability to shatter concrete would also translate to the ability to shatter bones effortlessly with a gentle movement.

Of all things, Dragon Ball Z made a decent attempt to address this as a problem. During the Cell Saga, Goku needed Gohan to really control his Super Saiyan power, so he had them stay transformed throughout their regular lives and not just in battle. It forced them to have to learn to control their strength, not just to fight, but to hold back and be able to do mundane tasks which all of a sudden became extremely challenging (holding a glass of water without instantly shattering it, for example)

I assume that all Super Strength is scaleable. It's not just super because it's greater than what humans can produce, but it's also super because of the ability to control the force you're applying perfectly. So when Supes punches a bank robber, he's scaling his strength down to Mike Tyson force, but when he punches Doomsday he's scaling up to Maximum. He could also be using his Flight to anchor him from moving when he hits things. Of course that doesn't explain other characters, like the Hulk, but Supes seems to have it all covered. As far as catching things that he should go through, I think he's been able to extend his personal forcefield around objects in the past, so maybe he does. Superman can basically do anything.

I think something to keep in mind about super strength in movies and comics it usually also comes with a super resistance. Basically their bodies are much tougher so they can take the force of their own punches. Along with that punching someone across the room would work if you had enough resistance. It’s the same situation when a regular person punches someone and they fall back but the person punching doesn’t.

Because who got the punch he got much more energy instantly And who gived he generated that energy (get longer time even if with 0,5mp) and Still he is in a stance so he can transform the energy into his legs and the ground! Also yeah there is opposite force but Still not the same sized object impacted! Some of energy not run out on that person who gived the punch! Reasons why I like the show "The boys" . It's easy to make mistakes in keeping control. Imagine how bad it be if a superhero gets drunk and loose all control of their power. Some times we manipulate things in our ever day life without realizing it. Like springs to absorb force to halt it and slow down pressures. Our joints work like that often yet that's where the spearing effect can come in to effect. That is if all pressure is focused only on one point as to two points. We see this often in the bed of nails trick. Most of those are blunted nails and numerous to spread pressure evenly. So yes because science. I'm thinking superheroes would also have to be super smart or super aware of their abilities and how to apply it... which takes practice.

He gets into talking about how fights go so long because he doesn't want to kill anyone and he goes lighter on the punches rather than harder to avoid accidentally killing anyone. While a neat concept I just went nope I have a hard time believing in mid fight anyone can do that level of calculation. Before anyone says you can definitely pull a punch I'm not arguing you can't, I'm just saying the degree of thinking that supposedly happened in those sorts of scenes had me laughing.

Well for one, Spider Man is a genius of Iron Man’s caliber, this already gives him the ability to think faster and more intricately than the average person. Then consider combat speed, Spider-Man has dodged lightning and dodged point blank bullets before. This, coupled with his Spider Sense giving him a warning every time a bad guy tries punching him, would make it plausible for him to easily and effortlessly dodge blows (relying on his spider sense heavily) while using his genius mind to calculate stuff.

in the old '92 X-Men cartoons, there is an episode called Juggernaut Returns where Juggernaut's powers are temporarily transferred onto a regular citizen (this episode is on RU-vid). When you see the citizen attempt to do normal things, everything ends in disaster in a similar fashion to what you described in this video. He would unintentionally rip the steering wheel of his car off, remove the door handle to the door of his apartment, and he's unable to turn on the sink to his kitchen because he's tearing into everything with the slightest effort. In a way, it's a retelling of Midas's Touch, except he's destroying everything he touches instead of turning them into gold. It's pretty funny, and I'm surprised you missed putting this episode into your video given how relevant it is.

As someone who had something along the lines of this "super strength" (I used to move pool tables and lift one side of a car by the bumper a long time ago), I can tell you an aspect he didn't bring up. The force on your body. For example, I used to leg press 1550lbs. If you had weak bones you could easily break a legbone, or joint, or even shear a hip socket with that kind of force. You can easily rip muscles. The rest of your body has to be just as strong to survive.

I made a lot of these points to friends of mine back as a kid, minus the scientific explanation of newton's of force since I didn't know what a Newton was at the time. One thing I liked in some early superman comics was they addressed that very thing when Superman was lifting a chunk of earth and thinking to himself that he isn't lifting it with pure strength but almost willing it to move, like how he flys, basically, supes is applying tactile telekinesis to avoid that very issue of catching a car and having it crushed by the impact. Of course that's only ever been mentioned with Kryptonians so a lot of other super strong characters don't have that ready excuse. Also, not arguing with your points, I love your videos and I love when comics and such take these realistic aspects of things into account, which they don't do all that often. Keep it up, buddy.

!!YOU...you know the parameters of fictional characters as much as I do(and probably a lot more). Please explain it to Kyle, all the ways his math is off, the various factors that are missing in contemplating how Superman and Spiderman's powers work....please? Notice How he did not Cover Luke Cage's method of super strength(which is just a leveraging of the hyper elastic propertied in his mutate cells)? Kyle has no clue of how Superman's aura reinforces the structural integrity of his body and whatever or whomever he physically touches. In Superman returns, the moment he caught that airplane's right wing tip, his aura seeped around it, enhancing it's integrity, but the further from his body = the less reinforcement, and he was not yet fully charged up as he had just returned from Kryton(thus he was just getting his powers back into effect). Due to lack of solar charge, the distance from the contact point and centre of mass, the wing eventually snapped, so he had no choice but to catch it at the centre, which he did by grasping the nose. You can see the ripple of distorting force through the airplane as it comes to a halt, it was his aura straining to maintain integrity of the hull while he was applying the max force he could without squishing the whole thing(or having it splay open in an explosive manner). The only example I can not completely account for, is Spiderman's catching that cop car, without using webbing. It's a stretch to claim spidy's electron attraction has a secondary effect of spreading exerted force over a greater surface area than is physically contacted by his body, but I do recall Kane(a legendary clone in the Spireman comics) demonstrating just that as he tore down a building using the force of this electron attraction which is ordinarily just used for wall-crawling.-This makes spidy's wall crawling power very similar to Qi-manipulation...he does eventually learn a form of Qi-sensing as part of his training with Shang-Chi to compensate for his temporarily missing spidy senses. All of these fictional characters have very precise control over their use of force, thanks in part to altered states of perception in correlation to their use of force.

Fullest Auto well dc did the same thing too, tho. They just actually named the darn thing. It’s basically the same concept, the speedster violates all laws of physics and live a happy life. For dc, the power comes from the speedforce while marvel used the mutations. Both don’t make any sense at all but we still buy the dc one, so why not buy the marvel too. He he. But, to be completely honest, when they teased that quicksilver and scarlet witch were going to be part of the avengers movie, I thought they’d give an explanation as to why they were like that and how their powers came to be since mcu had a good track record for origin stories. Then, they just killed the guy and I was like, welp, guess they can’t come up with anything.

The issue is more complex when it comes to applying "super" strength to a punch. Muscle twitch speed is more relevant to the force of a punch than the muscle's contraction force. Without a significant increase in speed and/or mass, the "super" punch won't be noticeably different than a "normal" punch. The "super" strength would be better leveraged by grappling techniques.
@zenhydra
@zenhydra 6 лет назад
Yes. For about 27 years. Why do you ask?
@qrlifescan
@qrlifescan 6 лет назад
You are spot on... Hence why big strong lifters and body builders can't punch worth a damn... That's why a scrawny guy like me can punch harder than then... But because of their muscle mass they can lift far more than me. There are several different muscles and the human bodies motion is very complex. But we must assume that the ability to control one's strength is as easy as we find it... In dragon Ball super Beerus slaps Bulma... Earlier he flicked Goku with one finger in SSJ3 and sent him into a crater, but Bulma stumbles a bit... Clearly Beerus is able to control his work output.
@mickeyg7219
@mickeyg7219 6 лет назад
Well, on a human scale, it's hard to imagine, but for a fictional super strong being, their punching force can also be attributed to the fact that their muscles contains a lot of energy. When they made a contact with someone or something, the titanic amount of energy got transferred this way. That's why a relatively slow superheroes (when compared to flying bricks), like the Hulk can punch just as hard.

Question: How dense would your bones need to be to not pulpify when you _Hulk Smash_ Iron-man's standard (gold-titanium alloy) suit? [Will having denser bones help at all?] Also, assuming all your body's muscles are 100xstronger, how likely is it that you would die from something as silly as your rib cage getting crushed by your super-strong diaphragm? I love BS-ing with Kyle , but I hope he delves into some video-game theory stuff as well~ ( your catch-phrase is way better than MatPat's)

I think Density would more or less keep you from flying. There are somethings out there more durable with less density. For example spider silk is far more durable then steel, yet it's far less dense. But none the less that is a good question on durability.
@TheUrbanwerebear
@TheUrbanwerebear 6 лет назад
Yeah, density isn't the issue, it's the material strength of the bones. Basically, in order to use super-strong muscles, the standard mostly-calcium bones would have to be replaced with something much stronger. Strangely enough, Wolverine's adamantium-laced skeleton is nearly the best-case scenario in comics for this, though he doesn't have super-strength (or at least, not nearly to the extent demonstrated in this video).

There is a reason that pretty much every portrayal of super-strength is accompanied with super-durability. Real-life competitive weightlifters have to be very careful when lifting very heavy amounts of weight. Not just from accidentally dropping them on a body part, but also from traumatic injury caused by their own muscles to their supporting bones, ligaments, and joints. I've seen photos of some pretty gnarly injuries caused by lifting more weight than the body's support structure can buttress.

the human brain can adjust our strength better than you think, someone who gains plenty of muscle does not lose accuracy for small tasks like using a computer mouse or threading a needle. the biggest problem put about super strength is that our brains fail to adjust or wrongfully adjust our strength when we get angry, you could easily drive a car with super strength but we might rip the steering wheel of if we get road rage.

In TV shows and movies, they show people get electrocuted and get launched. That would caused by your muscles all activating, right? Also, I'm sure you would go across the room for you can't stop that force coming back at you. That is unless you found a way to keep yourself secure, but there's no question you would at least break your arm and your leg if it's stuck to somewhere

Wouldn’t the neutral gorse have to cancel out the force from your hand to send you backwards? Like you hard would be pudding in a hand sock but you would probably stay mostly stationary if he went flying right? It’s like punching a guy in the bar, you don’t both fall over and you don’t rebound like a ball, but your hand may be broken after taking the hit.

Super Strength like Superman has to be pretty magical anyway. Can you imagine trying to get that much force out of an 80cm, 6kg human arm? You'd have to have an insect's exoskeleton, super dense mass, something way more explosive than blood and oxygen. So either you magically absorb the power of the sun into your cells or you're a 100ft crab.
@guyclykos

controlling super strength may not be an issue. Remember the time when you need to output more strength, you needed to command more effort into outputting such strength? Let's say super strength only activates ONLY when you reached your ORDINARY strength limit so you can output more force if needed. In this case, dexterity will not become an issue.

I would say that would depend on the super strength. Not all forms are created equal, even within the same set of stories. There are versions of super strength which require an activation (Sugar Rush's ability in My Hero Academia, Strong Man in Marvel Comics), and while active, they would have less dextrous control. In many cases, you are probably correct, like Bruce Willis; character in Indestructible. He has the potential for super strength, because of his invulnerability, but he doesn't know about it until he has reason to try. And then he finds out he can lift several hundred pounds with only some effort, and no practice.

true, but in the case of super strength. one would assume that if you could hit that hard, than your body would be able to take the force of it due to it being your own strength. now of course we could also look to one anime where the logical part of this is used boku no hero academia, the main character deku has super strength basically, but he doesnt have the "requiered secondary power" of durability.

StrangelyAmusing But with your super strength (and a metal box, maybe), you could compress large amounts of food so it would be easier to eat. Also, everything you eat would be like eating applesauce because of the massive strength of the muscles in your mouth. So, you could eat like 20 meals in one, eating 100 times more than normal in 5 meals instead of 3, because you are 100 times stronger (although that doesn't necessarily mean you burn 100 times more calories per day when you think about it). And actually, put on steel springs on your legs. You will be doing more work with less calories. So being stronger can make you more efficient so you don't have to eat much more than normal.
