Hey Dungeon Masters, let’s talk about hexcrawling in Dungeons and Dragons or another fantasy RPG. This will be part one of a longer series. In this first part, I go over the basics of setting up a hexcrawl. How do you hexcrawl? Any tools or mechanics that you love to use?

Judges Guild 'Wilderlands of High Fantasy' is an excellent example of a hex crawl world with the City State of the Invincible Overlord, settlements, lairs and numerous dungeons keyed to the hex maps. They use a 5-mile to-the-hex scale, which scales down to 352 yards or 1,056 feet to-the-hex and scales again down to 42.24 feet to-the-hex, easily. I've been using it since the 1970's and their tables for keen sighting, flora, fauna, terrain, water features and lairs is outstanding. This is a great video; I hope you expand on the theme more!

Cliff Notes: -Hex maps are an approximation, no reason calculate distance down to the decimal “Is it within half a day, a day, or more away” -Keep scale consistent and meaningful -You don’t need to fill each hex with description if there is nothing of note there -The main key of a Hex Crawl is open world exploration where the journey's difficulty is balanced by the terrain and randomness of encounters If anyone feels like I missed something please add on

Re filling each hex, it’s fine, and even somewhat of a design principal for hexcrawl modules and products, to have some kind of point of interest in every hex but if the party is not persuaded to investigate said point and there’s no other encounters of note or other decision points, don’t artificially stretch out the play time, move along to the next things. The keys- it’s all about resources (including time). Encounters, be they social, combat, or exploration, are all invitations to spend resources. Navigation affects resource spending as well. From a player perspective, interesting content makes these decision points meaningful. Choices have to be tempting and worthwhile or obstacles must be imposing and require attention. Time can and should be a ticking clock (we need to get to the Lonely Mountain by the New Moon; we only have supplies for thirty days; the mountain passes become impassable by winter; etc.).

That Outdoor Survival map gives the video a 1974 feel

Indeed! I will probably break it out for some more videos. I love it. I made a digital version in Hex Kit awhile back and I know there are some other digital versions floating around.

Kudos for using the black box. I also really like the "how exactly do you get lost" mechanic in the blue expert box. Although that means handling two different maps, one for the players (where you think you are) and another for the DM (where you really are).

I firmly put the player maps on the players. They might find, purchase, or otherwise get ahold of various rough maps but, ultimately, I put it on them to track where they’re going, where they’ve been, and where they are.

What book are the encounters from?

Should i give my characters a drawn map? Edit: i mean, if they are supoused to plan their movement, they have to have the map done. But i was thinking that an hex crawl involved an element of "hex to hex discovery". But when i began to think how that would play out, it felt like it bould become a slog for all players, exept me and the mapper. And in the next session im gonna have one of them map the dungeon and i dont know how they wil react to that. Maybe having to map the wilderness too would be too much.

Good question. I think it’s a good tool for both you and the players for the party to get ahold of the map. You din;t have to just give it to them though. You can offer them for sale or as payment for tasks. I like player maps that aren’t particularly precise or detailed but that show points of interest that might encourage exploration. They might be incomplete or fragmentary, incorrect in some ways, but with hints towards adventures that can spur the party on.

The host seems really bored. You should have some energy and excitement about the topic.

Thanks for the feedback! This is one of my older but still really popular videos. I was in the early days of getting comfortable doing all this stuff. If you check my much more recent hexcrawl videos, you might find them more energetic.
