Yep. Especially this particular scene where David rants about humanity. If they didn’t deserve it in 2003, then they most certainly don’t deserve it now. Oh well.
@@TheItFactorMMA He was talking about what we all know, USA goverment has done a lot of harm to humanity with wars, and this movie was released during Irak invasion by Bush.
@@thunderlord3183, did he get greedy? I am not so sure. He took his son on a flight through the sky as lightening and storm cloud and froze him in a lake of water. Presumably he needed only a sampling of his son to stabilize his own body, and left his son intact. Thor is from a god and a human, but is not Hulk the same if his father can become any object he touches while also retaining all of the aspects of a personhood?
ReligionOfSacrifice he wanted gamma energy maybe because he knows it’s his most powerful element. I don’t think he wanted to kill his son but just gain some of it just to get really powerful but banner and hulk together gave all of the gamma energy to his dad what is infinite That’s why in the end of the fight his dad was like (TAKE IT BACK) because he’s body could not handle the power so he became week at that point it’s weird.
This scene is just epic. I love how he instigates. "I didn't come here to see you. I came here to see my son, my real son." and later Bruce says, "I'd rather die!" It just shows all the madness and tension between them.
The one thing I'll say about this movie is how much they tried to develop Bruce as a character , now a days it's just him running away and turning hulk
@@chocobochick5390 In Ragnarok they turned Hulk into a grown baby in a monster's form. Yeah he can talk, but what depth is that suppose to have? And IW, he's so scared that Bruce has to do all the work instead. And most likely that's exactly how he'll be in Endgame.
I mean they can always bring them back. Tony Stark and Loki in my opinion were the only real deaths in those movies. Everyone else either gets written into a spinoff tv show or gets a stand alone prequel to soften the blow and finally make money off of that character. But I ain't gonna name names, cause I ain't no snitch. *Black Widow Agents of Shield Pepper Pods in Iron Man 3* Edit: Loki is back. This reply could have aged better.
This is exactly how my father would behave. Completely detached, violent, aggravating, aggressive, intense, abusive, paranoid, angry, apathetic, mean you name it. only thing is he did all that sober. He used to beat my mother too, Watching this scene will always gives me ptsd from when he tried to be fake happy with me afterwards. He would act the same way. People who have never been through that will never even come close to understanding and it shows. They created monsters like that because somehow i still find it in myself to feel sorry for them because i know they weren’t always like that something caused it.
1:28 That moment when Bruce breaks down and starts sobbing is just heart wrenching! It’s like all the grief and sadness over the death of his mother that he’s repressed and kept hidden for so many years finally came to the surface and he reverted back to a little boy again🥺💔
This is a great encapsulation of Bruce Banner's relationship with his father. David is very clearly behaving like an abusive parent, initially promising a good relationship but indeed his only goal is to leech off power from the Hulk, which is self-serving and he gives nothing back as a parent which is why I always found it a brilliant choice to make him the Absorbing Man: that character just always takes but never gives back which is how these abusive relationship often are, sadly. Eventually the child is discarded once he/she is no longer willing to go along or stands up for him/herself because then it is no longer seen as docile or somehow useful in the eyes of the abusive parent . This is why he frames things in transactional terms ("I gave you life, now you MUST give it back to me"), as if he and Bruce made a contract and that it'd be perfectly normal for Bruce to just give David what he wants and even then his greed comes out ("...only a million times more radiant, more POWERFUL..."). Knowing that this version of the character is the Absorbing Man, one might initially mistake him hugging Bruce for a genuine moment of affection but there's also the possibility that he was just trying to see if he could absorb his son's powers....He's also deliberately trying to get him mad. As parents should love their children and support them, it is clear that David is not capable of these feelings which is why he is pretty clear that he does not view Bruce as his son but rather the Hulk because that's what he ultimately cares more about: power. So when he starts yelling "STOP WHAT?" you get the sense that he has always been this same kind of asshole.
The ending is also great because Hulk doesn't beat his enemy physically. When his dad is full-on Absorbing Man and leeching from him, Hulk directs all his pain and anger into it...and his dad starts absorbing it...but can't withstand it. Despite being the one that inflicted all that abuse onto Bruce, he's not strong enough to endure it himself. Bruce survived it...but his abuser can't. David destroys himself through his own actions and because of his own weakness as compared to the son who he berated for being weak.
I think at one time, at the beginning of the film, David was a loving husband and father, as is evident by how warmly his wife speaks to him, and his interactions with young Bruce are, as well as his trying to find a cure for whatever it was he inadvertently passed on the latter. Ross not only kicking David off the project he was working on, but also knocking over his microscope and smashing those viles next to it, no doubt which contained whatever cure David was working on for his son, drove David into a rage fueled by despair over not being able to cure his son now, I think David thought the only way in that moment to spare his son the pain and suffering his condition would cause him was to kill him, as David said about the event later on to Betty: "I knew I was doing a father's work, fulfilling a father's mercy." And when it resulted in the death of his wife, I believe that was the final thing that pushed him over the edge and into insanity, which only progressed as time went on. I believe that when he first witnessed the Hulk, he was deeply grieved over not only what happened to his son, but also deep guilt knowing he was inadvertently responsible for it. But that soon gave way to obsession, over his son's power, which turned to greed, and afterward nothing and nobody else mattered, except acquiring what he was after. I think David's character arch is the downfall of a good man, a man who was a decent man at one time, but because he let his passion control him, it lead to him destroying both his life but also his family.
Yeah but he was also talking about what we all know, USA government has done a lot of harm to humanity (atomic bomb was the sicckest acts of all) with his soldiers waging wars and rules around the world, and this movie was released during Irak invasion by Bush, clearly it was a hint.
I haven't seen a single she Hulk episode. I don't even want to. The trailer was enough. It filled my head with so much disgust and cringe. Go ahead and call me a sexist incel. Watching your mother get stabbed by your father with a kitchen knife while trying to save you from getting killed by your own father must be child's play for women. Getting treated like shit. Growing up in poverty, no girl in life.......fuck. and then this bitch had the audacity of claiming that women are having it tougher than men. Like I wanna slap the dialogue writer and the director so hard.
@@Mr.Ambrose_Dyer_Armitage_Esq.powerful ppl behind the scenes fucking with our lives. Hulk is and will forever be a symbol of balance, freedom, righteous anger, and free will.
Ang Lee gave us instead a very Adult and serious-minded view of what this man's life and journey would really be like. The comic book version is fun and compelling, but this film goes to such a dark and Real place in human experience. It's not a film for children -as it does go to dark places dealing w/child abuse, spousal abuse and a mentally unbalanced father displaying symptoms of alcoholism.
dannyhuskerjay Different strokes for different folks. Most people enjoy entertaining movies with compelling acting and faithfulness to the comics, but some people (myself included) enjoy introspection and examination of the human mind. What you consider as flaws can also be considered minor annoyances to others.
You know what’s great about this scene? No music. Imagine a modern day franchise superhero movie having a scene this emotionally raw and bleak. Would never happen.
"THINK OF ALL THE HARM THEY'VE DONE!.. To you!.. TO ME!!!.. To Humanity!..." Notice how he emphasizes "to me" the most, outlining his egocentrism which led to him being evil.
"Let us shed these mortal vessels and have a war as gods!" This to me is one of the most exciting and amazingly conceptual scenes in the film as well as the battle that ensues. What a villain!
This is disturbing to watch. At the end of the day (at least in the comics), Bruce suffers from multiple personality disorder brought on by his father's abuse. The Hulk existed before the gamma bomb - he just didn't have physical form yet. It's pretty heartbreaking, honestly.
To understand David's motives, you need to know some of his past too. David's fear of his own son becoming a monster was based on bruce's lack of emotions and his experiences with his own abusive father, whom he regarded as a monster. He even vowed not to bring another banner into the world, that makes easier to understand why he thinks the hulk is his true son.
3:25 *THINK OF ALL THE HARM THEY'VE DONE!!!* His voice cracking His face Acting beyond comprehension You can actually feel his pain when he says that 4:15 ...then you realize he's batshit crazy as hell but.....his acting is trully amazing
This movie was awsome yes I know due to the long boring scenes people were furious.. this is what a real hulk fan loves, his battle with internal conflict and his emotions. Hulk needed to deal with these problems in order to make him truly the greatest super hero.
They weren't boring. Even as a kid I loved this whole movie. Not one part did I skip. It's poetic and real comparer to the shitty version of hulk we have now. Edward Norton hulk is better action wise. But ang Lee hulk is poetic, dark and true to the comics
Sometimes I wish their was an immortal man would make every member of the military all branches and every politician in our world disappear in a flash. All those powerful yet disgraceful bastards all those that create laws and acts and constitutions and bills and taxes and their pathetic laws all destroyed by someone more powerful then any human in the universe.
@@ericsantana1184 As someone who's gonna be a sailor in like a month, because he wants to pay for college, can you... not direct your creepy grudge at people trying to make a living and get by in the world? We ain't evil.
this movie didn't try to distract you with funny haha one liners or slap stick, or trying build a world bigger than one movie can handle, or setting up for the next super hero movie. no it was focused on the story and theme it was trying to tell. does it have its own issues? sure. But i can tell you right now compared to this, the MCU is truly a fall from movie making; its all about advertisement now a days.
This is seriously one of the most poignant, emotional, novel, and well-delivered monologs in cinema. You can tell how much the Elder Banner hates what's become of humanity, and really can't blame him for feeling this way.
irkenus It's a lot of movies i enjoy with slow pacing in it, the difference is, those movies had interesting stories and characters that were compelling to me. This in my opinion didn't.
The worst thing is, i can see where he's coming from. Everyone hates the government, especially someone like him. A scientist who was forced to stop his research. Feeling cornered, he started to experiment on himself and his son, which got him into even more trouble. Now after being imprisoned for decades and losing his mind, he finally sees a way to get back at them with the very thing he created. And he isn't the only one trying to weaponize Hulk so his hatred for the government isn't even unjustified. If it wasn't for him killing and attacking innocent people, i would probably be rooting for the guy.
I just watched the 2003 HULK, and I hate I never gave this movie it’s proper credit. this movie is miles ahead of its time. We didn’t deserve this movie until 20-30 years down the line. ANG LEE! Come back and give us the HULK we need
Say what you want about hulk 2003, but the father in this movie is by far the greatest actor in the whole film and arguably one of the best in the whole marvel cinematic universe
Me too that's the only thing i don't like about the mcu even with the solo movie's the character development isn't there only for iron man since that's where it began but the old marvel movie's felt just like another old movie witch is cool just like the comic's it's not just in your face superhero
not gonna happen, this is the reason why most mcu dont have a feel to be serious as this, there own serious take, did not sold well, the people want action, not a sad or tragic story in a superhero movie.
@@el_chico_punk_contracultur9524 he said the performances just because the movie was bad it doesn't mean the performances were too Eric and David's actor were actually great in their roles
I just love how this exchange and Nolte’s rant is about the concept of having real individualistic power vs communal power and the society we live in now.
The reason why Bruce turned into the hulk it’s because of his mother, when he was little, David took her away from him and accidentally killed his mother, Bruce really misses his real mother for a long time
Quite interesting? A scientist who tried to play god by changing man and when he developed a God complex he chose his creation in the hulk but it's the hulk ends up destroying his creator. It's like the saying that man kills god but in his attempt to become godlike as a man he created his own destruction.
(*All due respects to actor Nick Nolte, whose own troubles were unfortunately made public as the Hulk film was being released. God bless, brother Nick.)
This scene... man this is the best acting by Nick Nolte I've ever seen since Warrior. I remember seeing this in the theater when the last two Matrix movies came out back in the day one of the first comic book movies I've ever seen (yes Daredevil was part of them). Truly was honored to see this movie in the theater. I got toys for it too which are gone now.
I like Ang Lee's version better. Hulk is a hero with a lot of internal conflicts, struggling between emotions and intellect. As a superhero Hulk should be presented that quality in the movie. Ang Lee did a tremendous job brewing that mood. I understand that a lot of audience just want to see things smashed, hero battles villain, but Hulk isn't always that genre. Many times Bruce saw himself as a villain due to his excessive violence. Hulk is not suppose to be a merry character.
A small touch I like with this scene is when David says "Think of all the harm they've done!! To you! To ME!!!" That increase in rage as he's reflecting on their crimes towards him as opposed to the softer rage he demonstrates when trying to appeal to Bruce shows that, in the grand scheme of things, he's more bitter at how they've personally slighted him than he could ever be about Bruce or anyone else. It really shows this man is a sociopath that only wants a "good" relationship with his son to suit his own plans and would be more than happy to kill him if he didn't need him.
THINK OF ALL THOSE...MEN OUT THERE IN THEIR UNIFORMS! BERCHING (dk the word) YOU AND SLOWING ORDERS, INFLICTING THEIR PETTY RULE OVER THE ENTIRE GLOBE! THINK OF ALL THE HAREM THEY'VE DONE! TO YOU! TO MEEE! TO HUMANITY! And know this: When we can make them and the flags in hands of government, DISAPPEAR! IN A FLASH!"
Some really good, almost Shakespearian level acting in this scene. There's no doubt had if this scene were in a Disney Marvel movie, it'd be peppered with stupid jokes and one-liners.
One of the best scenes from an incredible (pun intended) superhero film. The emotional catharsis Ang Lee aimed for really did the comic book antihero justice. Hit the nail on the head. And the comic book type panes and editing were so amazing!
I don't care if everyone hated Hulk (2003), this movie was just as cool as I saw it in Grade 5 and now looking back at it; I am going out of my way to say this was Hulk's canonical origin story for Marvel's Hulk.
I watch this scene and have always had my anxiety driven up when I watched it as a kid. I watch it now as an adult and am reminded how and why it was so anxiety driving. Disney is really holding back the true potential of the Hulk property.
@@murilopenagoncalves3831 The Hulk is a genetic manifestation in this movie brought out by the gamma radiation. So he is the physical embodiment of David's toxic masculinity he was striving for: a big green muscle man.
For a small second when David seems to try to console Bruce, when you consider he's in tears after seeing his son transform into the Hulk for the first time, it seems that perhaps for a split second David is actually being sincere. David even admitted to Betty that he did try to cure his son, but her father put a stop to it, so I think it is reasonable to assume that David, before he became obsessed with his son's power, actually did love his son at one time, same as he loved his wife.
I personally think this movie is better than the amazing hulk in 2008. Im not saying that hulk in 2008 was bad, it was amazing but... This movie shows the true nature of hulk, he is invincible(well almost) but still, he has a heart and he can calm himself when nobody attacks him. But in the 2008 movie, all we see of hulk is that hes just a killing machine! But Hulk isn't a killing machine, he only defends himself, thats all. Thats what I loved from the Hulk from 2003 XD
TheCaledan Too bad Jennifer’s acting (facially) sucks in this. Why the director had her convey those “expressions” is beyond me. She really coulda conveyed it so much better and I don’t mean that out of cynicism.
Goddamn after the absolute shredder that the mcu hulk and his lore have been through in the recent years especially in she hulk, I have sooo much respect for this film now, and really always did, I miss when these comic book characters were taken seriously and actually tried to make good movie now its just set ups, terrible off screen development and absolute Disney kid friendly corporate garbage, I love this film
The acting in this scene is superb. Nick was essential to this film and kudos to Eric too. The writing also, just amazing. This film is by far the best marvel comic adaptation to film ever made in my opinion.
Damn... the villain dropping red pills to Bruce when talking about the Military, following orders, nations and flags people actively worship like a religion. Although most people don't like listening to the truth, most people will probably feel like this... 4:04
This movie was too good for its bad special effects and need to adhere to a comic book superhero's origin story. If this had been an original science fiction story rather than based on a comic book, it would have done superbly well. This was the Joker of its time, a deeply psychological film that touched on a lot of dark topics in a believable and relatable way.
