Yeah the Q book really reminded me of the personal implications thay occur with those people's families and relationships rather than the abstract yeah they are just crazy political people. Whole subreddits have been dedicated to family members dealing with it and people getting out of it. Thanks for watching Pat
I love how you are reading all these books on difficult topics. I can see why you need a Gloom & Doom journal. No too long ago, a friend revealed to me that he believed the world was flat. I have heard of the belief before (I am not going to dignify it by calling it a theory). But I didn't really give it any thought. I literally lamented for humanity that I knew someone with this belief. I knew he believed in some stuff I considered pseudo-science, but the earth being flat disturbed me the most. I purchased a book called Off the Edge Flat Earthers, Conspiracy Culture, and Why People Will Believe Anything by Kelly Weill. I want to try to understand why people have beliefs that disturb me greatly. I have yet to read it. Your video reminded me about it. I will try to read it soon so I can talk about what I think of it.
Oof yeah that's rough. I've met moon landing deniers and stuff but not a flat earther, I guess I though most people sort of did it as a joke or meme. Thanks for the rec though it sounds good Stuart
Hi Both! One of my favourite things was the tweet from the Flat Earth Society saying they had members around the globe! A Physicist circled the world globe and asked them to rethink. Happy reading.
Thankfully you ended your Gloom & Doom video on Hope Jahren, who I think really holds the balance between climate devastation and hope! Great video, which really feels like a push to pick up some thought provoking non-fiction.
Some really interesting (and somewhat frightening) topics here, thanks for sharing! My "Want-to-read" list is slowly taking over, I can't keep up the reading with your posting frequency haha
Also it's great to hear you mention q anon. I've managed to stay completely out of the political discussion (ignorance is bliss) UNTIL I heard of project 2025 and q anon like two months ago. It all helped me to realize that pretending it's not going to affect me is probably just what they would want me to do. I don't recall ever voting for a president in the past but that is definitely about to change. I'll be damned if anyone is going to try and foster anti science and anti intellectualism mentality on my watch! Thank you for the great videos.
Yeah the anti-fact, anti-science anti-intellectual stance really makes me depressed. I always think of all the hundreds of generations before us that lived and try to free themselves of superstition and ignorance and that sort of thing and it's basically pissing away all that they strove for. Also project 2025 is absolute trash and effectively calls climate change a hoax lol, among a zillion other things
Yes, you mentioned that you are in social work on a recent video. Would you believe that's what my first degree was in (Human & Social Services)? And here we both are talking about nature books! Haha. By the way, you say "Hey, what's going on everybody?" at the beginning of each video, right? I'm oretty sure I subliminally got that from you, cause I always say "Hey, what's up everybody?" And I'm pretty certain I was watching your channel since before I ever started one, haha!
Haha lol that is interesting. I recently switched jobs but it's just a different aspect of social work now. But yeah I didn't know what to go with for an opener so I just went with the most basic and generic one haha
Jesus and John Wayne by Kristen Kobes Du Mez is a history of the Christian right. It's been really helpful to a lot of people making their way out of the most authoritarian churches.
Thank you for this video Justin. I have a few books on surveillance and I have the Hope Jahren books that I really must get to. I have heard that The Story of More is really excellent. Have you read The Age of Surveillance Capitalism by Shoshana Zuboff? I have it and would like to read it but just wondered how it compares to the books on surveillance that you’ve read?
Since you have a Qanon book on your list, you may also like Hate in the Homeland by Cynthia Miller-Idriss. It's about how extremist groups try to make their ideas mainstream, and how they recruit members. It says it's about the global far right, but it also addresses the far left, and times when the two meld.
Erm, this might be too much to ask. Can you go through this “reading Journal” of yours you have? Or I heard mistakenly. Would love to have one just don’t know how to get started with one. Ty.
Sure, I might do a vid someday when they are filled more out. I basically just have a couple of lined notebooks for different topics such as modern philosophy and the environmental one I mentioned. Then when I decide that I'm taking notes with a book I'm reading (which isn't all the time) I just put important lines or pages or some of my thoughts in the notebook as I go along. Nothing fancy really. I just start a new page with each book
Okay, I had to click to discover if the books are about issues of concern to you, or if the books concern miscellaneous "issues" of any kind. Well played, sir. 🫡
