My brother has a Northern Painted turtle as a pet; we sometimes take him out of his tank and put him in the room, and he loves exploring it all. One time, he escaped from the tank and I found him scratching at the inside of my brother's closet.

I recently aquired a Lilacine Amazon parrot because its owner was moving away. His name is Chomsky (he doesn't talk, ironic) and he is very wary of other people and new things. We are working together to get him to be more comfortable, he is doing very well, he even played with a new toy today! His personality is adorable, I'm sure we will have a great relationship.

Zaphod Breeblebrox She's already taking an unnecessary risk by housing so many animals. Imagine all the diseases, and what if her foxes suddenly turn rabid one day without warning. Most things in life outside of food, water, and shelter are unnecessary risks. Going to school is an unnecessary risk. But Jessi is a smart person, and she's doing a great thing by helping so many animals and teaching humans about animals. She knows what she's doing, and it doesn't look like she's going to be a daredevil anytime soon. Considering she has a husband, sons, and 80+ animals to care for, risking her life for publicity isn't something I foresee her even thinking about doing.

@Jemima1377
@Jemima1377 10 лет назад
I'm not Jessie, but I'd guess you start with offering a treat just a tad behind the birds head, so it has to lean back a bit to get it and everytime extend the distance a bit more until she leans all the way down to reach it. When you make the command (bang) everytime, the bird knows there's gonna be a treat that she's going to have to lean down all the way for when she hears the command/sees the pointed finger and will do so - and if you reward her being quick about it more, well then I'd say you've got yourself a trick there. ^_^ But again: that's just my guess, so maybe someone who's actually done it could pitch in?

Hi! I love watching your videos. I would like some tips about guinea pig handling. I got my two girls about a month ago, and understanded that they are timid animals. I have made sure they had time when I first got them to get use to the home and being in a new space. I am now trying to get them to be less scared of me when I have to take them out. So far they have allowed me to pet them in their cage, and know me to be the food and treat giver; so they have no problems coming up to me for yummy food. I would like to build a strong trust between them and me, I know it will take time, but I want them to feel at home and loved. Thank you Jessi

I am currently the caretaker of two guinea pigs, Tilly and Dicey, and I have learned so much about catering to their individual needs by seeing how their personalities contrast with one another. Tilly has a personality fairly similar to that of Cheeks. She is calm, curious, and loves to interact with new people and environments. I try and expose her to new parts of our home and new forms of stimulation because I know she will really enjoy and be enriched by the experience. Dicey has something of an excitable nature. If I breathe too heavily for her liking, she will dart to her safe space immediately. When I try to hold her she often runs away, and darts to my hair for cover as soon as I have her in my arms. While all of these physical signals makes me worry that she is stressed out by the experience, she is ALWAYS vocal (really, she never shuts up,) and seems to look at her surroundings and really learn from it. While Dicey is brighter than Tilly, Tilly is the leader. She scouts out new areas and foods, and when they are outside of the cage together, they walk in a straight line with Tilly leading the way. I love the girls and I love how different they are because it gives me a sense of how distinct of a personality an individual can have within a species.

Parrots are generally very careful and nervous birds, being natural prey and all. She had probably never seen the toy before, and naturally wasn't sure if it would hurt her or not, especially since it was approaching HER, and she didn't get any chance of carefully investigating on her own before deciding it was harmless. :)

I had the meanest bunny ever. I didn't meet the critter until he was fully grown & he was in a cage about 3 feet wide, 2 feet tall & 2 feet front to back. He never came around to even being comfortable with people. I don't know why he tried to bite me, would pull his ears back like an angry cat & lunge at the cage door when I tried to change his water. Cleaning the cage was nearly impossible because he'd attack the moment the door was opened & wouldn't leave the cage. I nicknamed him my Pitbunny. I also had a wild coyote at the same time that we found as a baby & it would sleep on me, let me pic it up & wouldn't leave when we tried to set it free.

I'd really love a what, where, how on parrots ( maybe a multi species featurette) :D they are really intelligent and communicative. There was this visit at the zoo where a yellow crested cockatoo would jump on the front wall of the enclosure and say "hallooo, how are youuuu" and then place its head against the wire to receive pets. This interaction really got me interested in getting one as a companion, but while researching I found that since they are so intelligent their care can be very complex. Since on the internet opinions tend to get mixed, I'd love to get your perspective since you are so experienced in caring for animals and you are also a scientist.

My dad subscribes to a very different school of animal care than seems to be in vogue more and more. For my dad, as long as the animal looks healthy and doesn't act hurt or in pain, he doesn't seem to care about how the animal might be feeling. He also anthropomorphises animals--the dog is smiling, it must be happy, for example. It's kind of tricky to interest him in new ways of thinking, so I do what I can to help him look after his pets and I try to make sure they aren't completely miserable. I get that they have their own internal lives, and I hope to always learn more about the behaviors of their species and their individual behaviors. I'm probably not cut out to be a pet owner quite yet. I'll get there eventually.

As much as I love reptiles, I've never really been so much of a fan of the bulkier ones and always imagined myself having something sleek, like a Corn Snake or Chinese Water Dragon. Then, I saw Bindi. Really, I have no idea what happened. I've seen plenty of videos of Bearded Dragons before. This should be no different, but that's just it. It WAS different. She is so gorgeous, and it was really refreshing to learn about Bearded Dragon behavior. Before, I perceived them as rather dull and lazy, but that's not true at all, is it? Sure, they're more low-key, but I can see now that Bearded Dragons are interesting, curious, and interactive too. That head-tilting is really cute, isn't it? I thought so. Maybe it was the stellar explanations, or maybe it was Bindi's charm that warmed my hardened heart, but I do believe I'm a fan! In fact, I think I have a new candidate for my future first reptile. I'm so intrigued that I think I'll go do some research right now! Thank you, Jessi, for showing me the awesomeness of the Bearded Dragon! Tell Bindi I adore her, alright?

Question for Jessi: are there other places like Animal Wonders where a bunch of animals are kept and taken care of or is this organization kind of unique? Cause I know of a place similar to it, but it puts on presentations about the animals as well as takes care of them (none of the animals are exotic)-but I was wondering what you think about presenting animals like that? I personally worry that they are being picked up and passed around by kids (with supervision) too often. There are a lot of animals so it's not like the same ones are being presented everyday, but I'm still concerned that the animals are constantly nervous and that they're being looked after by so many different people, rather than having quality one-on-one time like you seem to do. Also, the main building where the animals are kept is big but often have kids running around cause it's a day camp during the summer, and that worries me also. What are your thoughts?
