So I've moved back to Vim from Emacs, and having spent a few days back in Vim, I've been looking at a few different plugins. I thought I would share a few plugins that I think are worthy of consideration.

More great content from the master. Thank you Derek for all your work to show us stuff we can actually use. Don't put the color down as just bling. You get use to that and you'll find you don't even need to look to know what's going on. Your peripheral vision picks it up for you. Color is a great thing to incorporate into your working environment. Thanks again Derek. Appreciated!

The real power of vimwiki comes through when you use its built in ability to export your vimwiki to static html pages. You can make your self a nice personal wiki that you can view and interact with inside your web browser. Its kinda like a lightweight static site generator. I live in vimwiki daily.

Only 1 plugin by the master of vim-plugins Tim Pope? Shame on you! Here are some recommendations: 'tpope/vim-repeat' - so you can use the dot command for plugin-mappings (integrates with the other two plugins listed here and vim-surround for example) 'tpope/vim-commentary' - for quickly commenting/uncommenting lines, paragraphs, visual selections etc. 'tpope/vim-unimpaired' - a bunch of sensible mappings that make your life easier (and might as well be part of vim by default), e.g. toggling ignorecase, hlsearch, and many more They are all very lightweight and unobtrusive, so no harm in just adding them in my opinion.

Derek, or anyone, (I realize this is off topic per this video but thought I'd ask people with more experience) I have a question about the command curl. I have Manjaro 19.02 and am brand new to Arch Linux. When I'm in the terminal I type 'curl getnews.tech' it displays perfectly. But of course, it scrolls off the page to the last line. I'd like to pipe the output to 'more' so it displays one page at a time. However, If I use, 'curl getnews.tech | more' It grabs the news but the output inserts the command character for escape rather than displaying the correctly formatted text . Is there an ARCH related issue thing I'm missing? Thanks for your time. PS - I can pipe to more just fine in Ubuntu (Debian) with no problems.

For anyone looking for a sane way to store/version control your wiki... use Gitlab Why Gitlab as opposed to Github? 1. Gitlab allows use of `[[_TOC_]]` expansion to automatically insert a table of contents 2. Gitlab allows nested directory structures and provides a built in navigation sidebar. Github just dumps all md files into a single directory for navigation

@yScribblezHD
@yScribblezHD 4 года назад
Not sure what you mean by "less clunky to implement", considering that adding a vim plugin is as simple as a single line in your init.vim if you're using neovim and a plugin manager. Unless you're referring to actually writing the plugins in VimScript.
@maxarendorff6521

@@drsensor Vim is suitable for people who want a simple and efficient text editor and who don't need advanced features like org mode or magit or mu4e or something. I still use vim sometimes if I just want to quickly edit a config file. But Emacs can run in terminal as well and it also starts up just as fast if you use it in daemon mode.

I love vifm, but it was not until I leveraged --servername and --remote-tab that I reached full satisfaction level. I can keep browsing in vifm and send selected files to a running vim instance. You can add a binding in vifm to open files in vim with a custom --servername in a new terminal instance, e.g. ,-. Then, another mapping that opens the file without a new terminal, but also with the same --servername parameter as well as --remote-tab parameter, e.g. `,-t`. Every time you hit that second binding on a selected file, it opens in a new tab of your running vim instance. Works so great! EDIT: just found out the hard work that it does not work with neovim...doh! But here is an additional tool that covers this use case with neovim: github.com/mhinz/neovim-remote

Derek, I think you are hung up on the same problem I was. I use an 'full fat' IDE and I like it. When I need to edit a file quickly from the terminal I use vim. I never open a single file in the IDE, that would be overkill. I cant compare the two programs, they are for two different purposes. Think of emacs as your IDE, think of vim as your editor, you dont have to choose one, choose both. vimwiki looks like a poor mans version or orgmode, use that instead of compromising just for the sake of picking a side in a 40+ year old war.

@@vittorioc7363 Emacs (I like doom emacs) has (imho) better autocomplete language support. If you are working on a js file, you get js autocomplete, if you are working on a php file you get php autocomplete etc. I dont have to fluff around with tmux.
