CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Wendy (Maria Aitken) calls him stupid, Otto (Kevin Kline) goes off on a tirade against the British.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In A Fish Called Wanda, Jamie Lee Curtis plays an ambitious con artist who uses every ounce of her sexual wiles to obtain a fortune in jewels stolen by her gangster lover Tom Georgeson. First, she romances Georgeson's dimwitted but deadly henchman Kevin Kline (who won an Academy Award for his performance). Then, to clear the path for her getaway with Kline, Jamie woos Georgeson's starched-shirt attorney, John Cleese -- and it's Cleese whom she genuinely falls in love with. Michael Palin, Cleese's former Monty Python cohort, plays a stuttering mob flunkey who continually messes up his one big assignment: killing a little old lady (it isn't that he has any qualms about knocking off the old dear; it's just that her pet dogs keep getting in the way). A Fish Called Wanda was scripted by star John Cleese.

The “isn’t it a secret” setup and “well why are you telling everyone” exchange is what gets me, particularly the way she delivers it. Nothing like British comedy. I’m American - the Brits are our alter egos (and vice versa).

John Cleese, admitting in press interviews that he had no knowledge of how to direct a film, served as co-director, since the studio executives at MGM were worried about Charles Crichton's age - he was 78 years old at the time. Fun fact: In the German-dubbed version, he says that the Brits would all be eating sauerkraut and listen to military marches, if it wasn't for the "good old USofA". Then he imitates some military marches. In Germany, the first verse of the "Deutschlandlied" was considered too nationalist after 1945 and generally is not sung in public.

The correct spelling is *Manfredsson-St.John,* for the correct pronunciation go to 2:23.

I'm just here repeatedly playing 2:22 - 2:25, and losing it with her deadpan delivery of that ridiculous line each time. 🤣

In the context of the film -- if the viewer knows what's going on -- this is one of the most hilarious scenes in cinematic history.

3:38 I personally never heard sir John Cleese making such an agony-like scream until I watched this scene, I actually never watched this film in the original version, I confess.
