A Fisher Wood Stove, Mama Bear

Just a little video of the wood stove. Mama Bear made by Fisher. It is a very well built stove. I do not remember what year we bought it but i think it was early eighty's.I still use it and it is built very heavy. It puts out enough heat to keep my 3 bedroom house warm. They make different sizes of these stoves and some even have 2 doors on the front. The wood that is burnt in the stove can produce different results. Dry wood usually burns hotter than wet non seasoned wood.

We got our Mama Bear new in 1977 I think. We heated our whole house with ours - never had central heat, ever - and I miss that stove more than anything!

Your stovepipe is set different than ours was - we had ours just above the top of the stove at barely over a horizontal angle, and it worked great - had triple-wall pipe out the roof. Your setup is wonderful! We had the same tools for ours that my husband built. Your video made me really miss him - he's been gone a few years.

Might want to consider getting a 1/4 to 3/8th inch steel plate - and throw it inside the stove - resting across the firebrick. On these old stoves it helps preent the flames from exiting out the rear. Some folks have done it with good results. I threw one in my baby bear as well. Found the info on hearth site. Although as you said in your video - it would limit how high you stack the splits inside the firebox.

Very good video. I have this exact stove that I purchased at a yard sale for $30. Pipe kit cost and fixins cost about $400. I hooked it up in my detached 26x40 insulated garage and it works great. I need some of the cool tools you created. I like your money saving strategies for distributing the heat. Utilities cost a ton. Nice to know you'll have electricity if the power goes out also. I read somewhere that that gasket wasn't necessary on the Fisher stove. I had a gasket one year, but can't really say it did much. Anyway, thanks for the video.

The second tool you made is called a raker,its so important with these stoves. I have an all nighter and it burns the opposite of this stove. You use the stack damper instead of the door dampers the reburn happens at the door baffle. Yours has an exhaust baffel if I'm not mistaken.
@wtbm123
@wtbm123 9 лет назад
I do have a damper i put in flue just to have it ,but it always stays wide open. I use only the regulator knobs on front door to adjust.. no baffle for exhaust on stove . This stove is just a open box inside with no re burn.

We Just recently bought a house with a detached garage, There is a Fisher stove in there and we aren't sure if it's a Mama Bear or a Papa Bear. How do we find out for sure which it is? The one thing that is for sure, we love it and it heats the garage to the point we almost can't stand it. Great stove!

You can hear the fan up stairs , not as loud but can hear . Mine is close to the resister as was not sure if the heat would burn it up .Only about a 16 foot run of pipe . It is a booster fan for duct work and if put in the middle of run it may be quieter .

They are good stoves. I use a lot of ash,locust and cherry,but I will burn any type of wood that is dry. If you Google, Firewood Btu chart ,you can see the estimated btu ,of different woods, and if you can try to burn the highest btu wood in your area. I burn a lot of what I call junk wood ,whatever I find ,and i just make sure it has dried.
@katdfinns

thank you, and it turns out that my new stove is a timberline, small, which is good. with one round knob on the front to adjust the air flow. Don't know if that is called the flue? I'm waiting for a friend to bring a section of pipe to hook it up to the pipe that already runs up the ceiling and out the roof. And, I'm getting a cord of wood delivered by the same person that brought the stove. I feel blessed. I will look up the Btu charts, that is good info. Thanks. I don't seem to find a pic of my stove on internet. But, it is great condition.

crimped end in to stove , then keep putting the next pipe on with crimped end going in the pipe from stove and so on . Some pipe is not crimped as much and it is a very tight fit into stove . Make sure inside of stove flange is clean

so you leave the damper on the pipe open.. you don't lose a lot a heat that way up the chimney at all? i try to play with the dampers on mine.. still confused as to what to play with and what not. the door ones I keep kinda small so not a lot of air going in.. and the one on the pipe is half open half close.. what is your advice for best heat output.. ours is in the living room
@wtbm123
@wtbm123 9 лет назад
+SassyMustang1980 I leave the one in pipe open , i would be ok with out it but wanted it for just in case .i use the door regulators and seem not to get as much smoke when i do open the door . The dryness and type of wood has a lot to do with how much heat it gives

The gasket material in the door had to have been added by you or a previous owner of the stove as Fisher stoves never had this from the factory. They were built air tight and intended to be used with no gasket material. Also your stove was built in the 70's... Had it been the 80's it would have had an arch top door and been UL listed.
@wtbm123

We bought it new and always had a gasket . Maybe the place we bought it from did it , but it was there
@specvdrvr04
@specvdrvr04 5 лет назад
@@wtbm123 Very interesting! Yeah, by spec, they were designed to not have it and furthermore it not be installed. Sounds like a new employee at the dealer started the week you bought the stove, feeling uncomfortable about it not having a gasket. I know that sounds crazy, but trust me.. take some time to read about these stoves. Both the forums and Bob Fisher's book you would enjoy immensely.

@specvdrvr04
@specvdrvr04 3 года назад
@@davevann2925 I could see that, only if the seal between door and channel wasn't good to begin with. Have you added a baffle to your stove? That's the only thing I've done to my momma bear. Keeps your fire in the firebox much longer, instead of escaping up the flue and wasting unnecessary amounts of wood. It made a huge difference and you can get dimensions off the Hearth forums. It's 15 degrees outside and my detached 1000 SF shop is 74 degrees right now. Hard to argue with that! Merry Christmas!

Deceivingly HEAVY! Fisher stoves are beasts..great stoves. I heated my house with a mama bear for about 4 years, and loved it. I used the tractor backhoe arm to lift it into the house, onto a sheet of plywood. I then used a motorcycle jack to move it into position. Moving the stove is a 2 or 3 MAN job.
