After several days of early starts and waiting for it to get light enough to fish the Pere Marquette we decided a road trip would be a good way to break up the week. So after a leisurely start we made our way to the Muskegon river it was only an hour away and the drive was pleasant through rural Michigan. Compared with the Pere Marquette the river was devoid of anglers and we were to find out why through the course of the day.
When we go fishing we have to believe that sometimes you are just not going to catch, "You can't always get what you want". Believe it or not this was my second favourite day of the trip. I enjoyed my own company and the beauty of the surroundings. Let me know what you take away from a tough day on the water in the comments section below.

Love your videos. Catching fish is nice, but it’s not everything. There’s a lot to be said for just enjoying yourself, and being grateful……. Thank you Lindsay!!! 👍🎣

The fish are a bonus. Time on the water with friends old or new. The closeness to nature in all its variety. Sights and sounds. That is the joy of fishing. Yes the States have some great fishing with a few slightly different perspectives. If they had any waters run in a similar outlook to Chew or Rutland. Then imho the Yanks would embrace the evolution of our joys of Stillwater fly fishing. Not claiming in any way shape or form they are lacking in their own love of fishing. Or skills sets. Only I think that the extra string to their sport could bring in many new anglers for them. That is never a bad thing. As most stocked trout lakes there are a bait based stocky bash. Again imho more fly anglers can only ensure the survival of our craft.

Sounds like a River Redhorse. A large sucker like species with a red tail. Used to catch them in the Betsie River north of there when I was a kid. Caught them on night crawlers.

Thanks, I think if I had all my gear I might have caught them.

Agreed, sounds like a Redhorse sucker. Bait is the best way to catch them but I've caught on fly-gear fishing nymphs.

BEAUTFULL DAY on the Muskegon river . Most likely a coarse fish called a red horse sucker. There are many fish species in the Muskegon. Steelhead Rainbow Trout November -March. Looked like Croton Dam and M-37 @ the Muskegon. The upper stretched or headwaters of the white river and its tributaries hold Brook Trout in th 7-15 inch range(6-10 inch average size )u

Lol. . IMO the Redhorse Sucker is similar to the UK 🇬🇧 Barbell. Most people who target 🎯 suckers drift fish with a split shot, hook & worm 🪱 in the spring time during the spring sucker runs in our rivers. Some folks smoke them. Smoked sucker isn’t bad if you don’t mind picking out the bones! They are fantastic sport fish when fished with an 7 foot ultra light rod and reel combo with 4-6 lb monofilament , split shot, hook and worm drifted in the river. Last June I hooked a large redhorse sucker at a impoundment that locals told me had stocked trout. I fished the venue for hours with my 4 wt fly rod and caught nothing nor did I see anyone land a trout. Tossed out a hook and worm 🪱 on my ultralight combo and was into a massive 20 inch red horse sucker. What a battle on light gear! Probably would have just snapped off my line in the river. After landing the fish it was returned to the water. What a memorable moment. Next time your in Michigan, let me know. Tight lines! John

@@Check-Your-Fly thanks for that I was convinced I could catch them if I had brought the right gear. The take I did get was on a squiggly worm.
