How do you take someone down without using your hands? That was the question faced by any practitioner of Collar and Elbow, leading scufflers on both sides of the Atlantic to develop a metagame that revolved around chopping their opponents down with deftly timed kicks and trips.

I don't have any collar and elbow experience, but I also like to use a lot of techniques that allow me to essentially sweep my attacker's feet out from under them. I have back issues (even though I'm currently only 29) so being able to use my legs to take out my attacker's is very useful. I also like to use a lot of holds, joint locks, limb breaks (not during a spar of course), chokes, etc. and I heavily prefer to fight from standing. I've put together my own methods (I hesitate to call it a style) and I hope to soon teach to others. There are some really interesting and advantageous moves I'm seeing in these Collar and Elbow videos and I would love to learn these techniques and hopefully add some of them to my own methods. I must admit, I also find this style interesting from a cultural perspective as I find many cultures and their martial arts fascinating.

Nice work, really appreciate the recreation of Irish Collar and Elbow. We are Highland Wrestling aka Backhold enthusiasts, but we also look into styles like the Jacket-Wrestling and such. I saw you even used a video snippet from our seminar with Zane Grey here in Germany :-) (around Minute 2:02). Cheers from the BAG

Sounds like Irish dancing possibly had some relationship to collar and elbow considering its focus on footwork

What is rules regarding stiff arming? Tripping sweeping is harder when further apart.
@TheHerowithaThousandHolds
@TheHerowithaThousandHolds 3 года назад
Yeah, stiff arming is explicitly forbidden in the rules. In the historical ruleset, it was formulated as "Both men should stand upright, with loose arms, and show fair play". We're gonna be pretty strict about that in any competitions.

@TheHerowithaThousandHolds
@TheHerowithaThousandHolds 3 года назад
@@MbisonBalrog Of course, but in a street fight you wouldn't be forced to maintain the fixed grips on the jacket. You can grip break, punch him in the face, kick him in the balls, whatever you want. Collar and Elbow was always a sport, not a street fighting style, so both participants were required to adhere to the ruleset.
