A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS (1964) FIRST TIME WATCHING | MOVIE REACTION 

In 1964, Clint Eastwood was still a TV actor, working on the CBS Western TV series, "Rawhide". During the TV show's Summer hiatus, Eastwood agreed to work on "A Fistful Of Dollars", because it gave him the opportunity to take his family on a European vacation that he would otherwise not be able to afford. During the "Rawhide" hiatus, the show's star, Eric Fleming, had drowned during the making of a spy film. "Rawhide" continued on for one more season until the TV show was cancelled by CBS in 1965. While Clint Eastwood was out of work, Italian director Sergio Leone asked him to star in a sequel to "A Fistful Of Dollars", and he agreed to do so. "The Man With No Name" trilogy of films was a big hit internationally, and Hollywood had no choice but to take notice of Clint Eastwood. The rest is history.

Actually The Good, the Bad and the Ugly could be considered a prequel to the other two movies of the trilogy because it shows where Blondie found the poncho he wears

There is one reason why it's good to watch them in order of their release. You can see how Sergio Leone worked with an increasing budget. And while not part of the Dollar Trilogy, I also recommend his 'Once upon a time in the West' (1968)

After the trilogy and if you're continuing westerns give The Outlaw Josey Wales a watch. It's up there as one of the best westerns imlo.

Clint Eastwood's first Hollywood Western after the trilogy was Hang 'Em high (1968).

I'm amazed you were able to remember all of the characters names throughout! Great reaction vid, pleasure to watch. The portrayal of the Man With No Name (Blonde/Joe) is the quintessential masculine character that so many other movies based their characters on after 1964 as the "man's man". The squinty eyes, short cigar in mouth and smooth voice all add to the ultimate badass! It is incredibly fun to watch Clint make that character come alive in the Dollars Trilogy and many other movies he's done after.

This film is the film that made Clint. The plot was also taken from a Japanese Samurai film called Yojimbo (The Bodyguard) directed by the great Akira Kurosawa. I believed he sued the makers for plagiarising. My absolute fav Clint film (directed and starring) is The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)

"Whoooow, can tell this is going to be a bloodbath," lol. Yep. No lie. Get ready to get about a million comments about this, but it's true Fistful of Dollars was an almost beat for beat remake of an earlier samurai movie by Kurosawa called "Yojimbo," just switching out the samurai for cowboys. It worked so well it spun off into its own series, the sequel and then the prequel you already saw, but it all started as just a safe remake, and yet Yojimbo is also very, very much worth the watch, too. It could make for a nice comparison video someday since you seemed to like this. I watch everything you put out regardless, but maybe a thought to put on the list? You won't be let down.

Respect for going back through the catalogue of older films. I think I must have watched this film at least seven or eight times, and I'm ashamed to say I only recently realized that the recurring theme music changed from "we can fight" to "we can win" at the end. Details like that are beautiful to me.

27:10 - Despite Eastwood's character wearing the same clothes, and carrying the same gun with it's distinctive rattlesnake handle, and chain smoking cigars; the three films in the Dollars Trilogy are not three films about the same character. Each films stands completely on its own.

After you watch Clint. You'll have to introduce yourself to Charles Bronson! "Once upon a time in the West!" Same movie director as the Fistful of Dollar trilogy!

This film started it all with the anti hero mysterious stranger. It spawned hundreds of more 'Spaghetti Westerns'; Italian Directors, filmed in Spain with mostly Italian and Spaniard actors with a few other Euro and American actors like Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef.

The only place i know of to get more of Tuco/Eli Wallach is in The Magnificent Seven 1960. 🤔👍

“Two Mules For Sister Sara” is a must see!

“The Man With No Name” is actually Joe in this picture, Manco in A few Dollars More and of coarse Blondie in the final. In the script he’s referred to as The Stranger as the original title was to be The Magnificent Stranger as opposed to The Magnificent Seven and both films were based on Kurosawa films. Leone always said that each character was different (Then why are dressed the same?) Marisol, Jose and Jesus are Mary, Joseph and little Jesus. That’s what separates American western from Italian, Catholicism is always underneath the surface in these pictures. A bit of trivia Clint did this film despite his agent telling him not to. He was in his mid 30s and stuck in the TV show Rawhide playing the young turk who always needs to be bailed out, but he wasn’t young anymore. “Look its in Italy, if its bad no one will ever see it here and I’ll get an all expenses paid trip during summer hiatus.” His wife wanted him to take it because he was prone to chasing skirts during summer hiatus😂 Months latter back at home home his agent meets him for lunch saying “Well I guess you were right.” “Huh” “Your movie its the biggest movie in the world!” Except here. “And they just called me to negotiate for the sequel.” He asked for a few dollars more😂 Clint was smart as all the money he made off these pictures he bought screenplays instead of fancy houses and cars and set up Malpaso Pictures. He would buy the scripts to star in them since he owned them he would hire directors and surround himself with better actors and eventually direct the films. He was a real renaissance man. If you want to take a deep dive into the Spaghetti West I suggest checking out some Zapata Westerns, a sub genre of Spaghetti. These pictures were all political and created their own tropes, a white European or American partnering up and manipulating a Mexican peasant during the Mexican Revolution some of these films are as follows; The Mercenary, Companeros; Run, Man, Run; and my favorite of the Zapatas A Bullet For The General.

A Fist Full of Dollars is a western adaptation of Yojimbo by Akira Kurosawa. I highly suggest you view that movie and compare the two when you get a chance.

Read an interview with a movie weapons guy, who said Clint Eastwood was one of the only actors who didn't blink when his fired a gun...... Although.....not sure I've ever seen him blink🤣🤣🤣

the epicity of this film is that a single man has defeated 2 gangs and practically freed a city , if you think about the bulletproof vest scene, a man having such an idea in the far west era is something of legend...and above all he has done justice to something that can be defined as the worst injustice in the world, taking away a child from its mother. So from a certain point of view, the blond is an avenger without knowing he is....almost a spirit wandering in the desert, one of the most dangerous men in the world.

Great reaction. When the films came out, it was accepted that Good Bad Ugly was a prequel and when he got the poncho at the end there was a big laugh in the audience as it was already iconic.

Great reactions to the best westerns of all time in this trilogy. Sergio Leone was such a master of the "spaghetti western" and of course Ennio Morricone made incredible music for the series, not to mention a young Eastwood made his Mark in a big way. Love the Bible verses as well. Keep up the great work. I would suggest maybe the first great Spaghetti Western, Django. Not the crappy version by Tarrintino, but the real deal original.

The photo shown at the outset is likely from TG,TB,&TU, as he is shown with a percussion revolver and that movie occurred during the Civil War, which means that firearm would have been correct for that time. In A Fistful of Dollars, everyone is shown using cartridge firearms- not necessarily all that much later in history, maybe 1870-1880s.

Another classic Clint western you should watch is, "The Outlaw, Josey Wales". It's one of Clint's best!

I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction to one of my favorite movies. As other’s have said, Yojimbo (it’s on Netflix) is worth a viewing, as it’s the original idea of playing two gangs against each other. Clint is a master actor.

It's impossible to overstate the importance of this film. Prior to this, American Westerns featured clean shaven, immaculately dressed good guy heroes like John Wayne, with no moral ambiguity. One of the most common cliches was that a Western would start with the hero riding into town, see the bad guy hassling the local librarian or schoolteacher, and promptly punch the bad guy out, never losing his hat in the process. Leone's very first scene turned the genre on its head. Audiences didn't know if Eastwood was a hero or not. There weren't antiheroes in movies then. Everything and everyone looks unkempt, dirty, grubby, and REAL. The violence was excessive for the time, and plenty of critics attacked the film for it. The soundtrack set the standard we still hear in Westerns today. With almost no money, and an American TV actor who was his fifth or sixth choice, Sergio Leone revolutionized Westerns. As you watch the trilogy, you'll see some of the same supporting actors appear again. Gian Maria Volonte, who played Ramon here, is even better as Indio in the second film. He made a lot of good westerns, but he didn't think much of them. He went on to become a giant star in Italian cinema. Lee Van Cleef, who was "Angel Eyes", saw his career revived in the next film, "For a Few Dollars More", playing a good guy for a change. And when you've finished this trilogy, you must see Leone's epic "Once Upon A Time in The West".

Great movie. I hope you watch the all Dollar Trilogy. I highly recommend you see the movie "My Name is Nobody" 1973 a really funny spaghetti movie. Another more modern movie you should see that plays homage to this movie is The Quick and The Dead 1995.

If you are interested, you can watch the Japanese Samurai movie this movie is based on, "Yojimbo" by Akira Kurosawa and starring Toshiro Mifune. The word yojimbo is Japanese for bodyguard. Kurosawa sued, and eventually "settled" with Sergio Leone, who directed the "Dollars" movies. If you do watch "Yojimbo", you will also want to watch it's sequel, "Sanjuro", which again stars Mifune. Hope you enjoy the sequel to "Fistful", which is "For A Few Dollars More", with some of the same folks, in different roles.

"A Fistful of Dollars" (1964) is one of the great antihero films of the sixties. I was gonna say a hallmark of existentialist cinema. Then I looked up antihero at Wikipedia only to find a still picture of Clint Eastwood from this movie! "Revisionist Western" genre apparently. A stranger from the wasteland finds a town in turmoil and exploits the confusion to advance his finances. The frame compositions in the shots in the opening twenty minutes of this film made a big impression on subsequent generations of filmmakers. "Yojimbo" (1961) was also remade as "Last Man Standing" (1996) starring Bruce Willis, Christopher Walken, and Bruce Dern. Kurosawa stated that a major source for the plot of "Yojimbo" was the 1935 crime film classic The Glass Key, an adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's 1931 novel The Glass Key. But the overall plot of "Yojimbo" is closer to that of another Hammett novel, Red Harvest (1929). A few other vintage Eastwood Westerns from back when that hold up well to multiple viewings are "Hang 'Em High" (1968), "Two Mules for Sister Sara" (1970), "The Beguiled" (1971), "High Plains Drifter" (1973), and "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" (1974) -- which isn't a Western per se -- these bank robbers drive high powered muscle cars instead of riding horses -- but is a Western in spirit.

Besides Yojimbo, I remember there was also a David Karadine movie with a story line like this as well, sword and sorcerer, or something like that.

Hello from the UK. Clint said that the inscrutable look on his face was aided by the cheroots he smoked. They were apparently awful! Filmed during a break while Clint was making Rawhide . He thought he would make it and would hear nothing more. How wrong was that! Sophia Loren apparently made everyone aware in Hollywood what a box office success the film was in Europe. Filmed in Almeria in Spain as the budget was so low. The names of European actors changed to make them more recognisable and accessible to the American audience. I was fortunate to see Morricone conduct a full orchestra when music from the film (and many of his other film scores) was played. Finally I am fortunate to have the original UK release cinema poster on the wall in my den. Great to see someone from the .younger generation enjoying this classic. .You can probably see it's one of my favourites. 😊

Of the trio, I could just never get into this one. For a Few Dollars More is the best of the three in the trilogy IMO. Amazing how long these have stayed relevant.

I made my Grandmother take me to the Drive-in in Merritt Island, fl. back in August1968. Hang'em High was just recently released. So they had a triple feature of the Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Westerns!

I have always loved these spaghetti westerns. Once you finish the Eastwood westerns, consider a western musical he did, "Paint Your Wagon". Also, spaghetti western comedies that are part of the Trinity Trilogy ( Boot Hill, They Call Me Trinity, Trinity Is Still My Name) are well worth watching, starring Terence Hill and Bud Spencer.

My personal opinion is the outlaw Josey Wales is his best western next to the unforgiven, hope you watch that one soon 😃

This movie was inspired by a Japanese movie from several years earlier called Yojimbo. That movie was directed by Akira Kurosawa, one of Japan's greatest directors, and starred Toshiro Mifune, who is known to American moviegoers because he has also appeared in a number of Hollywood movies. It tells an almost identical story, but the turf war is set in feudal Japan and the man in the middle is a samurai warrior. The same story was again made into a movie in the mid-1990s. This time it was the story of two rival organized crime factions running booze across the Mexican-American border during prohibition. The man in the middle in that movie is a professional gunman played by Bruce Willis. They are all pretty good movies, should you be curious to see one or both of the other two.

May I suggest perfect world, pale rider, and the beguiled. These are excellent movies he is in that don't get brought up enough due to his incredible resume.

I love this movie!! I can't remember how many times I have seen it, just too many to remember. Checo like his rifle and joe likes his pistols. Joe best with guns period. Clint Eastwood character name is not blondie in this movie. FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE (1965) his character name was Monco. In this movie his character name is Joe. Just want to inform you. Clint Eastwood is the best action star ever.
