A Flintknapper's Guide to Notching with an Antler Punch

The long awaited notching video, thank you Silas! I've been reluctant to try punch notching out of fear of putting too much force into my piece. But I can easily see it can be key to getting a good notch in an otherwise thicker piece. Thanks for your advice!

Interesting indirect method. Punch notches are fun but dangerous lol

I had found punch notch flakes on archaic sites before when artifact hunting and didnt know what they were from. A few years back I learned about punch notching from a fellow knapper and now I've havent found another notch flake on a site .

Dude you rock. (Sorry had to be done). But really that's awesome and I love that you are so into it. I am a Martial Arts trainer & writer and am working on Neanderthal weapons & fighting. It's a surprisingly complex subject from their physical capabilities (larger noses and lungs to maintain higher oxygenation=longer endurance at non freezing temperatures etc etc) to what they may use as weapons against other Neanderthals. Im very interested in the Levelois technique for making flint sharps. Unfortunately every explanation I've found is much too obscure! Either only shows it being done (it's counter intuitive so language is required!) or explains in Wikipedia about "striking the core sub-parallel to the flaking strikes" etc. Um "sub-parallel?". Anyways, if you could message me and explain it in plain English (or French, German, or Greek) I'd gladly throw you a few bucks or offer in kind. Im a master research data analyst, orchestral composer, martial artist (teacher/shifu level in a Kung Fu (wing chun and JKD) Neigong & Baji (which you'll probably never find another teacher in your lifetime honestly it was a secret bodyguard art rarely even admitted to exist) and trained but not master of Ninjutsu, Judo, Muay Thai and Krav Maga. Anyways, or I can just be a guy to chat with about cool stuff. But yes, please email me or message me if you can give me a simple explanation, OR will answer 5 questions. Eg: how does one know where to strike to make the main split? Sub-parallel? Wtf is sub-parallel? Lol anyways. I like your vids and if you get bored hmu!!

Putting it close to the knee may have been my problem. I could never get it firm on the leg that’s probably why. I was on the soft part of the leg.
