As the title suggests, this work was composed to celebrate the coronation of George VI in 1937 and is accordingly dynamic and celebratory in mood. It is a more substantial work that the word 'flourish' implies, comprising three movements. The first sets words from the Bible, the second takes its text from Geoffrey Chaucer's Lake of Stedfastnesse, and the third is based on words from the patriotic Agincourt Song, an early fifteenth-century English folk song.
First performance: London, Queen's Hall, Royal Philharmonic Society Concert, 1 April 1937, the Philharmonic Choir, London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham.
