A Fragile Peace and A Fight For Justice In Northern Ireland | Foreign Correspondent

It’s called ‘the British betrayal’. Great Britain promised Brexit wouldn’t lead to the creation of a new border between the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. It broke that promise.
Now many of the province’s Loyalists - those welded to the union with Great Britain - are feeling abandoned.
“It’s almost as if we have to be ashamed of being British citizens, ashamed of our heritage and ashamed of our identity”, says one Loyalist activist.
In the two decades since the Good Friday Agreement, Northern Ireland has kept a fractious peace but many are now wondering if this peace will hold.
‘What we’ve witnessed over the past five to ten years especially is a more divisive, dividing political community”, says James, a social worker. “It’s about celebrating battles, it’s about celebrating death…conflict and rebellion.”
ABC London Bureau Chief Samantha Hawley reports from Northern Ireland where many among the Catholic and Protestant communities are still deeply divided and traumatised by ‘the Troubles’ - the blood-stained civil war that tore Northern Ireland apart for three decades, from the 1960s
Recently, sectarian riots broke out in Belfast, provoked by the new sea border.
“The whole area was completely filled by police in riot gear…and we had petrol bombs and everything”, says one local, who had to move his children out of the area to safety.
Across the capital, the so-called ‘Peace Walls’ erected during the Troubles still play an important role in keeping hostile communities apart.
Also disturbing is the emergence of shadowy new paramilitary groups - small but violent.
Two years ago, one of these group - ‘the New IRA’ - killed young reporter Lyra McKee who was on the streets of Londonderry during a riot.
“They’re criminals who wear a mask of Irish republicanism to try and hide the fact that they’re criminals,” says Lyra’s sister Nichola.
“In some parts of Northern Ireland, even to this day, that sort of belief system gives them legitimacy.”
But the younger generation is determined to break free of the past. Many of the so-called ‘peace babies’ feel that ending social disadvantage will break the grip of the paramilitaries.
“If we’re seriously tackling division, we need to tackle it head on…and operate on the growth of poverty”, says one Belfast student.

Speaking of the IMF, it had to bailout the UK om multiple occasions from 1949 onwards, as sterling crisis succeeded sterling crisis. This process culminated in the IMF's largest sovereign bailout, when the UK had to go cap in hand to get rescued in 1976..... "When Ireland stayed part of Europe" = when England and Wales voted to leave, taking Scotland and NI along with them. "An unauthorised civil rights march" - in reference to Bloody Sunday in Derry. Loyalist’s voted for Brexit, we warned them this would happen. We told them there would need to be checks, and their response was “hard border in Ireland”. We told them that wasn’t going to happen as it was against the good Friday agreement and they said “well then we’ll solve it with technology”. We told them the technology didn’t exist and they still carried on because they believed it would result in a hard border in Ireland. Now the same loyalists want us to feel sorry for them because they’ve been sold down the river by a Tory government. That’s not going to happen, you made your bed now you can lay in it. Also regarding the flag at city hall. We suggested flying both flags and they said no. We suggested a new civic flag and they said no. We asked them was there any room for compromise and they said no. So it was decided to bring Northern Ireland in line with the rest of the UK and only fly the flag on designated days. They do not fly the union flag every day of the year in Scotland, England and Wales. Loyalists just like to be reassured of their superiority up north which has been diminishing every year. Also, Jamie Bryson would go to “any length to defend the union”. Back during the flag protest he was arrested for inciting violence. He went on hunger strike, and gave up 2 hours later when he asked an officer to order him an Indian. Also it should be noted the troubles started with the burning of Bombay street in which Protestants burnt the homes of their catholic neighbours, leaving them with nowhere to go and no possessions. The 1st police officer killed during the troubles was killed by loyalist paramilitaries. You have framed this report as their community is under attack, when in reality it’s their superiority that is under attack. We asked for equality and they refused, now the changing demographics are taking the equality that was denied.

It said it all at the start. "You go back in time" My wife visited NI (from Uruguay) when I lived there and she felt more threatened on the British side of the community because of paintings of guns and masked men on it to her it felt like saying to anyone that didn't identify as British to go away somewhere else. At this point we have mixed both sides so much it's just history separating us and the identity issue. It is a shame because the people are nice to everyone except ourselves.

I agree that the people are nice to everyone exept themselves. I’m Irish from the Republic of Ireland. But when I went up north last year, there were some unionists that would talk away to me. Like they had flags in their restaurant but they were lovely people to me. The nationalists were still probably a bit nicer which shows a little division but I didn’t feel threatened or hated by the unionists. I think you just have to try to avoid bringing up politics.

I personally found the Irish people in N Ireland much more coherent and up to date with how a civilised society should act in order to achieve their political goals. I found the hard core unionist nasty and delusional. If you cannot even admit that the Irish have every right to fight you as you stole their land, marginalised them and tried to erase their culture, you do not deserve any sympathy

Actually the violence "Not seen for decades," was far more widespread and longer lasting in 2013 when the flying of flags on government buildings was brought into line with the rest of the UK. "When you are accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression." If Unionists feel betrayed then they should direct their ire towards the DUP who have been instrumental in all aspects of this, from the Leave campaign through to helping to usher in De Piffle as PM.
