Communities living in the shadow of Northern Ireland's Peace Walls, meeting inspirational people fighting to undo the damage caused by generations of division and hostility.
Shot in stunning 4K and narrated by the 2018 Emmy® Award-winning actor Matthew Rhys, this compelling series explores six of the world’s most iconic walls and borders. It features the wall between the US and Mexico, the Korean DMZ, the Israel-Palestine Separation Barrier, the walled communities in Northern Ireland, Cyprus’ Green Line, and the now-demolished Berlin Wall.
From the crumbling ruins of ancient walls to brick barriers that are currently under construction, each episode uncovers the human stories behind these walls and asks why they were built, how they affect people’s lives, and what happens when the walls come down. This is a series about hope and unity in the face of division and about the triumph of the human spirit in spite of separation.

As someone from the south I was amazed as how bad things still are when I first visited Belfast. We don't really here about what is going on up there to be honest. It was such a wake up call and I honestly felt ashamed as someone who studied History in Dublin we're not really thought about the troubles....not properly I believe. To see the way things are in a place not even maybe 3 hours from my home was such a wake up call and honestly every time I go to Belfast I have such a good time and everyone is honestly so nice, They're noticeably friendlier then in my nearest city of Galway and Galway is a friendly place. I hope Belfast can find true peace eventually...I think it can.

Thank you for this documentary. I was born in 1968 in the U.S. but remember hearing about the IRA and conflicts in Ireland. I remember the affect the song Zombies by the Cranberries had on me and there was a movie about it (I forget the title) and It seemed like the conflict would never end. But this video, while it made me shed tears because of all the tragedy, also brings faith that things will get better...ARE getting better. There are so many lovely people working to make sure that transformation takes place. Near the end, the older gentleman gave the very best argument in favor of non-religious public schools that I have ever heard. I wish every Irish person well. I truly believe that there is always more good in humans overall than bad and they sometimes just need someone to take the first step toward peace to get it going. I'm so sorry for the suffering of everyone there. HUGS and LOVE from Texas.

Its getting worse. The people in power and the media want a United Ireland and forget that the Protestants are at least 48% of the population while there are only 45% Catholic who support the BBC. The protestants won't go down without a fight. This documentary was ridiculously biased.

It’s a struggle between two different national identities: those who see themselves as Irish and those who see themselves as British. I agree with you, however, that unionists will not simply lie down and accept living in a united ireland. But time is not on their side. Catholics are an outright majority in four of the six counties of Northern Ireland and throughout Northern Ireland Protestants are now a minority for the first time.

@@bensanderson7144 Yeah thanks, I suppose it depends who you talk to. For some its definitely religion, for some few they will tell you that they are just 'cleaner' than their oppos, 'our houses are cleaner!'. In Scotland now Catholic or Protestant is getting to be a much bigger issue: and the SNP are egging it on. The problem with this documentary and some other comments is that one side presumes that they have all the virtue and that giving in to them/the Republicans is the only humane choice. Seeing things differently is therefore denying everyone their human rights and failing to 'work together'. We see this level of 'virtuous' partsanship all over the Western media now. Protestants have been sold out badly by the UK govt - as have been many others down the years.

I have met many from both sides, Catholic's & Protestats listened to their stories, watched the wee children be happy just by the wee little things that did it for me! Their future was changed forever if they got involved Lord help them even today still since the GFA was signed, Sectarian approaches still going on. Storemont is just a bandade for Westminster to keep their eyes on Ireland. 1968 was Martin Luther Kings Marches so then in Derry they thought why can't we? That's how it all kicked off. Derry says it all, where my heart is, frightening strikes against both sides still going on. If you care to continue Journalism, this is the place , I never had Fear it was very real for me an ignorant wee business girl who has deep roots all over the UK , that grew up in Vancouver Canada was to never be the same again but a very strong individual in Peace, Love and Listener. Never give up' sacrifice your future for the right thing, selfless Acts. This Video is very real as I know it very well. Do not take sides, pray for Peace. I am glad I was raised around Multicultural background, grounded me. Love is the answer. Today there still are many sad things still happening especially because of Brexit. Like Israel and Palestine, Peace is never going to happen as long as Occupation is still there. Independence, why not!? Anywhere World wide. Peace is the answer. Violence is not the answer.

My grandfather on my fathers side emigrated from Northern Ireland in the 1920s. They were a Catholic family. My father was adopted into a Catholic family of British descent. He married my mother who was entirely of British descent and a Protestant. I in turn married a man whose grandmother belonged to the Orange Lodge. I think because we live in Canada we were able to escape a lot of the attitudes from the old country. My fathers mother was from the Republic of Ireland. His parents met whilst working in Toronto. I love Ireland and am currently trying to learn the language. I am not Christian at all. My hope is that Ireland and Northern Ireland will become one country again. For now I just hope that the people can find common ground somehow. Compassion is the only way forward.

This is quite heartbreaking to see really... I really hope the people of Northern Ireland can one day bring those walls down and live in harmony... you can never forget history, and there is of course a lot of it in this country... but history is always being written, and in 100 years time it would be great to look back to 2021 and beyond as a positive piece of their history... not just bloodshed and heartbreak all the time... for me, it’s a subject which always fascinates me, and one I am always trying to learn more about... the history of Northern Ireland... Whilst I have no connection with Northern Ireland, I am someone who was born and raised in London with an English Protestant dad and Irish Republican mother, so it’s a unique and crazy place to watch these documentaries from... I am very proud to have both as my ‘heritage’ but I also believe religion is something that often causes more conflict than it’s worth... which is why I refuse to subscribe to being either a Catholic or a Protestant... Good luck Northern Ireland... create a better place for your future generations...

Just because it “ended” in 1998 doesn’t mean it’s all stoped the violence is still here just not as big. Some People are still stuck in the same mentality as back then. So long as dinosaurs on both sides of the divide keep winning elections, they will never allow Northern Ireland to move forward.

It was the political class and ruling elites who stirred up the hatred and division and should bare the blame. The working class should have united to overthrow the ruling class to bring about better conditions for everyone. @@harrypmay the original idea during partition was that the anti-Homerule Unionists in the North were to demand the entire province of Ulster, but then they realised that it would be an Irish majority state, so to solve this problem the decided to only demand the counties of Ulster that had a Unioinist majority, those counties were Derry, Down, Antrim and Armagh. Tyrone and Fermanagh had a Irish catholic majority but the Unionists in Belfast Decided that if they Gerrymanderd these counties and kept the Old voting systems that gave Net contributers extra votes (usually Bussiness owners/large estate owners, who were overwhelmingly Unionists). This led to the Counties of Tyrone and Fermanagh being forced into the creation of "Northern Ireland" even with majority of the populus voting in favour of independence. All cities in Northern Ireland were majority Unionist bar Derry City up until the late 90s when things started to change rapidly, today Lisburn stands alone as the only unionist majority City in Northern Ireland, the rest are either Nationalist Majority or ~50/50. Nationalists parties have for the first time a Majority in Stormont, the Demographics are quickly turning and with it votes are shifting away from Unionism especially in the younger generations and an increase in voting for Nationalist parties is expected to keep climbing, the Alliance party is growing in votes within both communities also, mostly at the expense of Unionist Parties. Brexit has brought irish Unification to the mainstream again and if Unionist Politician's and political groups continue to disregard the livelihoods (and Majority vote of everyone in Northern Ireland who voted remain) in favour of Loyalist Ideology and against the prosperity of all in NI, then the downfall of unionism is imminent.....some might say their downfall is already in motion with unionism currently at odds with itself and its biggest party (DUP) literally purging their own party members.

It is obvious that his legacy continues on today through the work of his wife and son. They are a credit to Northern Ireland and should be applauded for the decisions that they have made in showing the hand of friendship to nationalists and republicans.
