Oilers fan here. You’re getting a good one here Sabres fans. McLeod is a very fast, incredibly responsible defensive forward. He was a key part of the best penalty kill in playoffs history this year. His offence as it stands leaves a bit to be desired, but he has all the tools to be effective if he can put it all together. He’s 24 and has plenty of upside. The Oilers are in win now mode so it makes sense that they wouldn’t want to wait for him to develop further and with us resigning Henrique, there was no place for him on a team that is very deep at center. You may have overpaid a bit, but in a vacuum McLeod is an excellent addition to any team. Best of luck this season, treat Clouder well!

Thank you for your honest opinion. Savoie was one of the players i didnt want to trade but they need a #3 center. Saying that Savoie was 2 years away from making this roster. Ntm, we have 3-4 players that are further along, then him that are going to get a roster spot sooner top 6 wise. I was looking forward to seeing Savoie play with Benson and Cozens but they need a 3rd center. I hear the other guy Toofli or whatever his name is can be a decent prospect as well. Any idea how good he is?

Mcleod’s positives: Arguably the fastest player in the NHL. He was on a center heavy team. He is a defensive zone face off specialist.Forces turnovers. 97th percentile in defensive statistics. That is elite Selke material..Savoie has been passed by Benson and Kulick. We now have five first round forward prospects in the pipeline if you include Benson. This team has to overpay to get what they need. How many 5 foot 10 inch forwards do we need after all.

Finally, someone seeing it for how it really is. The other prospect is pretty good as well. People said we got fleeced on the ROR/ Thompson etc trade. That worked out for both. In Ruffs system the 3rd center is extremely important. This trade is going to define GMKA.

Here’s my thoughts. Mcleod has upside and he’s a solid NHLer already. He’s lightning fast. Savoie has performed at the WHL level very well but there’s no guarantee it translates to the NHL. My concern with Savoie is that he’s small, which is fine, but he’s been hurt a few times already. Maybe our staff feared injury-proneness? What intrigues me is the 22yo who was thrown into the trade from EDM. Time will tell but I like this trade

Savoie at 9th to me was a waste; Buffalo already had a plethora of players like that, and they draft another so highly? Meanwhile (1) Benson outclassed Savoie immediately (2) Buffalo could’ve had Mintyukov who went right after Savoie, look what he’s done for Anaheim already.
@bdonaghu
@bdonaghu Месяц назад
For my money, Savoie became somewhat expendable once Buffalo drafted Benson the following year. Part of rebuilding is to trade some of the picks and prospects in order to help the immediate team. And Buffalo did that. McLeod is a big and fast two-way center that immediately slots in as the 3C, where Savoie is a high end prospect, but is still unknown at this point. And Savoie has shown later in the season he really cools off when the games get tougher. Whereas McLeod just played in 24 NHL playoffs games on the second best team in the league. I like this trade for Buffalo!

Great trade. Savoie had no route onto our squad for years unless Kulich, Ostlund, Helenius, and Wahlberg got moved. Passed by our last two 1st rounders. Passed by both 1st rounders taken after him in the same class. Still small and fragile. Least professional experience of all our A prospects, and second oldest. Second lowest of our A level prospects for a young, fast, defensive 3C with upside on an RFA. And an extra asset. Beautiful bit of business.

Savoie is a local kid here, and at one point was rated as the #1 pick in the 2022 draft (albeit a weak draft) and if he was a bit taller and heavier he might of been the #1 pick. I think of Brayden Point - he's only an inch shorter and weighs the same as a 20 year old. He's been hurt which is why he's dropped on your depth chart but I'm sure you guys liked something about him otherwise why pick him at #9?? McLeod is an ok player but he will frustrate the hell out of you - he has the talent but he has no desire. OMG - just listening as I type this - Teppo Numinen - wow. Yes he was AWESOME in Wpg.He is / was one of the most underrated dman to have ever played in the NHL. He was NOT spectacular at all - he just did his job, never out of position, and he moved the puck extremely well with very few mistakes. He didn't make spectacular plays and was on the small side (for a dman) but he was a beauty!

In my opinion, a fair trade for both teams. Edmonton gets to offload some salary and get a good prospect. Buffalo gets an elite skater who is very good defensively and can step right in and play. McLeod definitely needs to work on his finishing game and forechecking game, but if he can get those going, he will be a very good player for you guys.

He was acquired more for defense than offense. Adams said he wanted to improve the bottom-6 and he has done that, at least on paper. Even without Savoie, the Sabres still have a strong prospect pool including several good forwards. You aren't getting a top-6 forward for a prospect, especially a smaller one. People need to calm down.

I know some Buffalo fans are a little upset about the price that was paid; however, know you are getting a great player. Roam we needed a 3C and as much as it hurts giving up Savoie. You can get a Savoie in every draft and who knows if he even becomes a NHLer. McLeod is only 24 years old 6'3 extremely fast with RFA rights next off-season. Losing Savoie doesn't hurt as much with the draft we had. Lots of 5'9 guys light it up in juniors or the minors, few make the NHL, so he's still got something to prove. Clouder is a responsible third line penalty killer with wheels. Throw in Ty to grease the wheels a bit. Why the trade? Sabres need to responsibly build salary, Oilers need to dump salary. This trade serves both teams equally.

Joe from Locked on Sabres (by watching video of him) liked McLeod's speed, ability to chase down players & steal the puck (Joe mentioned a shift vs Matthews) & his exclusive defensive face-offs. He was basically the Oilers #5C after they resigned Adam H. McLeod is signed for $2.1mil x 2 more RFA years. He is ready to step into the #3C role & is currently cheaper than Mitts with more size & speed. Wayne GMKA had to give up something to get McLeod. The drafting of Helenius more than likely made Savoie more expendable. Now knowing his 11% shooting % is another plus. Maybe he will blossom more in Buffalo.

GM Adams knows this coming year is playoffs or unemployment. All chips in, as best as he can given it's difficult to get players to come here. That's his fault too. Adams should have fired Granato in the first week of December 2023 last season. He could've saved last season by intervening. Adams could've hired Lindy as soon as Jersey let him go. Instead: The Granato/Okposo led Sabres stood by with Okposo organizing a feud with the fans (who pay his salary), while watching Detroit and the Islanders make the playoffs. How's that for leadership? That's on the GM. I believe that General Managers have to be active and lucky to be successful. Here's hoping Adams gets this move right. Go Sabres!

I can skate really fast, in a straight line, into a wall. We should've traded Benson to make room for Savoie. (Also Savoie was not eligible to play in AHL last year, he wasn't "pushed out" by anyone). You do understand Moose Jaw traded 7 PICKS including 2 first rounders for him this year? Knowing he's going to the AHL/NHL? He is a future star. He was our future, starting probably next year. Those players you are mentioning are not like Savoie. They don't fill the same role as he would've. I get being optimistic, I've been optimistic ONLY, for 20+ years. But this was a terrible choice, for every year but this year. Savioe easily becomes the best they have . However Sabres need to make playoffs this year . Savoie is still 2 or so years away form playing in the NHL we don’t have time while the oliers do . Also while you loved Savoie he got passed by Benson . And Jiri Kulich looks more ready than savoie at this point. Plus we have Östlund , Rosen , and Wahlberg all right in line to be the next guy . Oilers fan from Edmonton here. I’ve followed McLeod since he was drafted and I’m happy to answer any questions about him. I think one thing that is being missed is he is a legit NHL player right now, and his numbers are pointing up. To compare to the NFL: getting McLeod is like drafting a LT in the first round. Get a good one and you don’t have to worry about the position for 12 years. I think that’s what McLeod does for you as a third line centre. I would suggest trying to sign him to an 8 year / ~$2.5-3M AAV contract now, and you won’t be worried about the position for a long time. His defensive metrics are already very good, and if they keep improving (and they should) by the time he’s 27 this is the kind of player you can’t trade for. He doesn’t currently fit Edmonton’s Win Now mode, but he should be a perfect fit for the Sabres peaking in 2-3 years.

Get excited Wayne - this move is all about replacing Krebs and in the process making him expendable. He hasn’t signed yet and is not listed as going to arbitration. I’m all but certain Krebs is going to get moved and it’s going to be to the Flyers in a package for Joel Farabee (they have interest in Krebs and this rumor has been around a while). Farabee was coached by Sabres assistant Seth Appert. He grew up in Syracuse as a Sabres fan and played for the junior Sabres. He fits the bill for a top 6 winger and at age 24 has upside. He is pretty much Alex Tuch 2.0 (just different playstyle), a good player who wants to be in Buffalo I think the only thing holding this trade up is the package for Farabee. Buffalo probably wants to give up Krebs+futures (Rosen and picks ideally) But I think Briere is after Mattias Samuelsson, he is exactly what the Flyers need and his trade value is similar to Farabee. They see him as expendable given Buffalo added Byram and wants to give him a contract also I’m trying to temper my excitement/expectations, but I think this is in the works. It makes sense for both teams and the Sabres definitely have discussed Farabee at length given the ties and what he brings offensively. He’s also nothing like Skinner - Farabee can play anywhere in your lineup and brings more than just scoring (a friend of mine a big Flyers fan told me exactly that, he also doesn’t want to lose Farabee he loves him)

With the glut of forward prospects, Savoie was expendable after his junior teammate in Benson jumped him on the depth chart and took hold of an NHL spot. Savoie would've been possibly ready in three years, assuming he doesn't continue to get hurt and jumped by guys on the depth chart both in junior and the pros. How many times over the years have we overhyped a prospect and they ended up being nothing? We still have Kulich, Rosen, Ostlund, Wahlberg, etc to be hopeful in. Where are all of these guys playing in the lineup? We can't dress 20 forwards. The way I see it, we traded a coin flip for a proven NHL player in a role that the sabres desperately needed help in. Was it an overpay? Probably, but not as much as a lot of people are saying.

What I've heard from other sources.. He's fast.... very fast. Savoie right now seems steep... but really his size was always going to be an issue in Lindy's system. We'll have to see how this one turns out... yeah, on paper I'm skeptical.

I like mcleod’s game. I understand Savoie was buried in the depth chart but wish we could have seen some of the prospects develop together in Rochester to see how they pan out in a year. I just feel like we could have landed McLeod for a 2nd? If you want to overpay give up future picks as our current pipeline can hold us for 2-3 years down the road. Adams landed a 3C but seems like an overpay, head scratcher really.

So we have been acquiring a roomful of lawn ornament sized skill players (Collect The Whole Set!) and Savoie has spun his wheels while Rosen and Kulich and Ostlund have gone by in better competition overseas. Add Helenius and he is expendable. Enjoy the Western Conference,little buddy 😮
@nicklettieri208
@nicklettieri208 Месяц назад
I mean it's an overpayment but it's Buffalo and it's not that drastic of an overpayment once you look at his advanced stats and all Savoie has done is lightly beat up on younger players than him which isn't his fault but when you have Kulich, and Ostlund putting up points against men and having the performances at worlds that Savoie has had the opposite. But I do agree if you move a player that high in your prospect pool it should and usually is a part of a package to fill a spot higher in your lineup. But this is where we're at. We also just drafted Helenius who might be as skilled with the puck or better, more well rounded, and more NHL ready than Savoie. We still have a top 3 prospect pool without Savoie, and I also think there still has to be another move in the works moving either Greenway or Krebs. I don't think the roster has room for both of them anymore especially if we add to the top 6.

Good trade for Edmonton. McLeod is a regular season guy, not even close to being a playoff impact player. Which is why Jackson traded him. McLeod panics with the puck when a truck is coming towards him and causes brutal turnovers. McLeod was a terrible centerman. He loves perimeter hockey which is why he was a far better winger. If Buffalo acquired McLeod as their 3rd line center Buffalo is in for a rude awakening. Bottom line is McLeod is terrified of getting hit and going into the dirty areas. The Oilers have no time and no room on the roster for players like that. But we'll take Bedard 2.0's all day long. Thanks for Matt Savoie. The dude will be a scoring beast playing with McDavid and Draisaitl. Sorry Buffalo, you got fleeced.

With Savoie’s injury history, in a far softer league than the NHL, and actually injured in development camp( not a place where anyone is told to go out there and light someone up )… this is actually a risky trade for EDM. Savoie has to change how he plays if he’s gonna make it in the show. If he tries to dangle through people like he did in the WHL in the NHL… he’s gonna fuckin die. We saw a far more talented player, Conner Bedard come in and break his jaw less than halfway through the season. If Savoie stays healthy, he’ll be electric. But right now that if is a lot bigger than most people realize.

McLeod immediately makes the PK better, he is solid at center, has more grade A chances for then against and is fast. We like him it Edmonton, but at this point he was the odd man out. If we weren't over the cap he would still be an Oiler. He also played on the second line wing a few times with Drai, wasn't his best look, but wasn't a fish out of water.

McLeod is a Bottom 6 player on a weak team. Bottom 9 on a good team. Good for 10-12 goals. Decent on the dot and the PK. 6'3 but soft, won't go in the hard areas. Super fast but most of his goals he's last guy in the zone, waiting for everyone else to do the hard work and cleans up garbage. Likeable kid with an infectious smile. Oilers gave him every opportunity to succeed. He even spent a big chunk of time as Draisaitl's winger. Just doesn't seem to have much drive. He had more ice time in the playoffs than Janmark Brown and Henrique. They needed to clear capspace and it's clear he reached his ceiling and he's easily replaceable by Holloway who they called up for the playoffs. Or any number of prospects. And they're hungry to be in the NHL. And though only 6'1 Holloway out hit McLeod 86 to 27 and had more goals and points and is fast too. Don't know what Savois ceiling is. But if its higher than 4th line center. Oilers won this trade. But does give the Sabres a serviceable NHL who can play right now.

The Sabres have many prospects like Savoie (Kulich, Ostlund and Helenius but all 3 have more defensive play in their toolkit). Savoie is not given to be a top end prospect especially at his size and we need a 3rd line C right now and has Stanley Cup pedigree. Our bottom 6 looks so much better than it did before the season started, I really like what Adams has done so far. Ruff can definitely get us to the playoffs with these moves imo.

LOVE THIS TRADE AND WHAT ADAMS HAS DONE TO THE BOTTOM 6 ! FAST & TOUGH NOW . NO MORE SOFT & SLOW SABRES! Macleod is the second fastest skater in the league next to Mcjesus, great on faceoffs 50% win rate , good on the PK! 3rd line= Zucker or Benson, Macleod Greenway 4th line =Malenstyn Lafferty Aube-kubel- check.out their HIT totals and they are all FAST! Spare forwards- Krebs and Rousek Savoie got passed on the depth chart by Benson and Kulluch. Savoie needs at least 2 years in the AHL to develop. He better bulk up or he wont last. Remember he got hurt in last sept prospects tournament and at the WJC! Do you want a rookie to start at 3rd line centre!? You guys say make a trade bring in a 3rd line centre, well Adams did and Macleod is good! Remember folks you have to give up something to get something and the Sabres want to make the playoffs next season , with this lineup they will! I know alot about Tullio ! I watched a lot of his games when he was in Oshawa in the OHL. He reminds me of Dale Hunter or Claude Lemieux as hes a little ball of hate, he has tons of HEART, and he wont back down from anyone! He went after 6'6 Kevin Bahl when he was with Ottawa! This being said he will probably only be a good AHL player , his skating will hold him back . Resign UPL ( i hope UPL doesnt go to arbitration) , Malenstyn and krebs and we are all set! Ive already started chirping and trash talking my leafs Habs and Bruins fan friends !😊😊 Hope you feel better soon Grandad ! 😊 Question ..why is Samuelsson still on IR? ( cap friendly) Will he be ready for training camp and to start the season? Is this why Adams got Gilbert from Calgary and brought back Bryson ?

@@neilkennington2397 I agree Karen’s tries harder than any Sabre. Please reply to this question. My brain bursts at the thrilling prospect of Dallin as a center!!!! Oh my! Let him create as much as he wants and terrorize the opponent As a defenseman, when he is beautifully created it does more harm than good because no in the league gives up more 2 on 1s than our Dahlin. Sabres overpaid big time. Oilers are in cap hell and all you had to do was wait if Ryan was your 3c guy.Sabres have all the cap space and could have waited until their asking priced dropped. Yes sabres have a ton of 1st rounders but Adams asset management was not good. I bet if you waited until August you could have got him for a 2nd round pick and a B rated prospect. Now if this were Leon coming to Buffalo witha new 7 year contract of 12 million per year then I'd expect Savioe to be going the other way but not for a 3rd line center!

McLeod like it's been said before is fast, he's as fast as McDavid. The only problem is he has Rico Fata's hands. He is a wallflower and shys away from the physical play. He needs more coaching defensively because he gets lazy and instead of finishing his check he will take a big looping turn away. He was a healthy scratch during the playoffs due to his lack of defensive awareness.

You can't tell me we couldn't have gotten him for a 2 and a 3. Which still would be an overpay. I'm a strong KA supporter, but this was monumentally stupid. This is the kinda deal a GM makes when he is feeling the pressure. Even if he works out beyond what we expect, it is still STUPID. I've been saying for a while should be going after a stud (Leon, Sid......) , an overpay then makes sense then and now we have lost our biggest asset for that kinda deal. Maybe if we're lucky, there is a part two? Leon? I can dream.........
