Just keep doing what you're doing! So nice to see you all out having a good time and dreaming I was out there with you. Merry Christmas to you and yours from here in Canada!🥳
I love your videos - the music and peace of them makes everything in the world seem ok. Keep doing them as they are great therapy. Many thanks, James (a Wanderer sailor from the UK).
That’s the problem with ‘groups’. Being unable to decide on a ‘team’ destination. Maybe you should just do your own thing? I think I’d prefer that. Thanks for the vid.
Hi again, as to your request for ideas for videos..... I'm a motor boater, however as i watch more of your , and others, sailing videos, I am entertaining the idea of a trailer sailer.. could you maybe integrate some basic sailing info in your future videos as of this moment, there are too many ropes and sails for me to contemplate lol. yes i know there are many "how to" videos out there, however adding snippets on a channel such as this would make the learning more relevant, if you know what i mean. Frank from Syd
Hi Frank, I will try and incorporate some sailing tips. I always thought my viewers were sailors and I didn't want to state the obvious, but if that's not the case, then yes I will work in some basic sailing tips, cheers Paul
Yes Adam has really scored a good boat. After a lick of paint she will look brand new. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment, cheers Paul
Merry Christmas Paul. Work continues on my boat between rainstorms. Only a few more tweaks here and there until it is ready. I hope you and your wife have a great holiday season, and many thanks for all your videos...they keep me inspired to get my boat maintenance finished.
Just found your channel….really interesting and enjoyable stuff Was that a monitor lizard? Was not aware they were in Australia. Are they “neighborly”? Have you watched Roger Barnes’ channel? He is a Brit that lives and sails his dinghy in Northern France
Hi Yes they are monitor lizards grow to about 5 ft, they are brazen and will steal your food. But don't get bitten by one as they eat dead animals and their mouths are full of very bad bacteria. Yes I follow Roger Barnes, cheers Paul
Thanks for all your videos, I've enjoyed them and have learned a lot from them. You asked for suggestion, or ideas for videos. Well here's one. How about motor mounts, how they work, different types on the boat around you. closeup shots. Are they adjustable up and down? length of motor shaft ., I always have loads of questions. Ask the other boater questions about theirs, lessons learned, etc, etc. Thanks so much for everything!
Thanks Matt, Misty Blue is a CLC Pocketship ( CLC is Chesapeake light craft) Terry built it himself and it only took him 6months.... but it is the 7th boat he's built. Thanks for watching, cheers Paul
Thanks mate for watching as you have found out it's not all about racing....and it's good for the mind. Check out my other videos when you have time, cheers Paul
Very enjoyable, what you do and how you do it suits me fine! Regarding ideas - I watch a lot of wild camping, and `Going Solo` is an American guy who cooks some amazing meals in a tent on a little camp stove. It is interesting and educational to see what can be done with one burner and a little forward planning. The other thing is if you could investigate converting an open dinghy (I have a Wayfarer) to a cuddy cabin?
Thanks Steve for the suggestions. I haven't seen many Wayfarers here but I like the idea of adding a cuddy cabin. Check out sailing Wayfinder Bruce added a cuddy cabin to his Heron. Thanks for watching, cheers Paul
I always look forward to spending some time with you and the guys every week. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Don't feel the pressure to produce something new, going on a sailing adventure is plenty enough. I would like to know what king of "stuff" you bring along on your boat ( I always bring too much). Cheers.
Hi Mate thanks and happy Christmas. What do I take well a lot and probably too much as well. I always take a couple of spare meals and too many clothes. Maybe I should do a video on that , cheers Paul
What GPS would be suited for the Myall lakes system? so one would know which bay is what ? I am Just down the road and have a Jarcat5 that I want to start camping / sailing with
Hi well some have Navionics which is $35 per year on their phones, which is not too bad. I don't have it as I'm more worried about dropping the phone in the water. Josh has dropped his a couple of times but it still works...an Iphone I think. I hope to see you on the water , cheers Paul
Hi Paul, not really related to this video, but was wondering if you could do a video on tacking and gybing on the Kate louise with the dipping lugsail and the jib. Also a bit about how to best trim to suit a Stornaway. Love watching yours and the other videos from the Sydney raid group.
Great suggestion! Neil. My lugsail is not a dipping lugsail so the mainsail stays one side of the mast , whichever tack you are on. This means one tack is less efficient as the luff is against the mast. A dipping lugsail would be very fiddly to tack singlehanded. As far as tacking and gybing , it's the same as a Bermudan rig....the mizzen is self tacking, though when Gybing I tend to manhandle the mizzen boom across, so it puts less stress on the gooseneck. As far as trim, the lugsail would not be quite as flat as a Bermudan Jib and Mainsail. So the speed is there with shape but high pointing is sacrificed. However the newer version of the Stornaway 18 to be made in the states, will have more ballast, a deeper skeg keel with a more modern profile and wings. This will increase it's speed and pointing ability. Thanks for watching, cheers Paul
In Tea gardens there is a nautical themed house on your right as you drive in. The owner has a houseboat that looks like a floating rustic tin shed. You know provided you have the fuel you can get from Port Stephens to the ferry - the ferry is taken down that route every few years for slipping. Also you can also give a go on cardboard riding down the sand dunes near the beach. If you are really keen you can go behind the break at Hawkes Nest that's where the 6m Great White Congregate during the day (about 30-50m) from the swimmers. Question for video: How high are the boats on trailers? Which models can you get in a standard garage to keep them out of the weather. Question 2: Boat sleeping videos - tips and tricks.
Thanks Andrew, I have paddled my Kayak from Hawkes nest to the ferry and also from Bulahdelah to Rivermouth. Both great and would love to do it in Kate Louise but not sure about recharging my electric outboard, should I run out of juice. Thanks for the suggestions....noted , cheers Paul
Thanks Paul. Always entertaining, you have a good group and it always look like fun, Merry Christmas to you all, I like to see the different boats and hear their stories.
Enjoy watching your Videos Paul, some thing to look forward to while I build my boat. It's getting to be quite a little fleet. It would be great to hear more about the different boats that people have and a little about their stories Merry Christmas and a happy New year to you as well, Cheers mate.
Thanks for the videos. Winter is here on East Coast of US and it warms me up seeing you sailing. Like the interviews and boat historys. So many cool designs. How about showing us where you are on a global map, not familiar with your areas. You and Rodger Barnes both have excellent channels. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Thanks for watching. This last sail was at Myall Lakes about 3hrs drive north from Sydney on the East coast of Australia. On the east coast we have quite a few big lakes and also tidal rivers. I hoping to go further a field next year. Have a great Christmas and New Year and thanks again for watching throughout the year, cheers Paul
Paul as always great video that was hilarious about the duck keeping up with you and your absolutely correct about have a great spouse who lets you go sailing on your birthday and anniversary have a merry Christmas from Miami Florida.
Hey mate, love your work! Really enjoy the pace and sights of your adventures. Currently boatless after having power boats, cruisers keel boats and trailer sailers. So really remembering some of the great cruising and anchoring spots you have visited.
Hi, Dave has bought a Tophat 25 which he is working on, as he wants to do offshore cruising. I think he still has the Cherry but he hasn't sailed with us for 6 months, hopefully he will come on a raid in the new year, cheers Paul
Another great KateLouise adventure, thanks for organizing and thanks to you and the rest of the RAID crew for the chats, laughs and enjoyable group sailing. Can’t wait for the next one! PS: the videos have a great mix of sailing, chats, tips and points of interest!
... well, nothing to be found about John Botol, Melbourne, nor any data about his boat, which a member of your gang is launching for the first time, perhaps you can help me with his email address, ... of course only if the owner wants it ...
... yup, Paul, ... ... I "trusted" Mr. Google's translator, who gave me "John Bottol" as an English subtitle, ... well, you Australians do have quite an accent sometimes, I'm afraid, ... and of course I found the boat immediately after your tip, ... thanks to you ... Edit: There is a PDF under "John Crawford Handbook" with everything you should (... or want to ...) know about this little boat, ... just in case the owner doesn't know it yet ...
Thanks for the feature Paul, you made me look better than I do in real life 😂. Enjoyed my short stay on Sunday and will certainly try to make the next one. I’m liking my free boat!
Great video again Paul, they just keep getting better. I loved my Investigator (Topaz Bill) and only sold it as cost of replacement trailer was daunting. We did some great adventures on the Queensland coast. Merry Christmas to all. ⛵
Well you don't get any in Myall lakes, but sometimes there are dolphins. Lake Macquarie has sharks and a great white ...though I'm glad to say I've never seen it. Thanks for watching, cheers Paul
Happy Christmas!! I do so enjoy your videos! I have a 1972 Cape Dory Typhoon Weekender…she’s 18.6 ft., sails like a big boat…too bad I’m in 🇺🇸…would ❤️ to do a raid! Have friends in Tassie…maybe next holiday I can take a quick stop and join in! Fair winds, and following seas mate! 🎄
I’m a retired vet, 68 yo, started sailing when age 16, on a 26’ keeled, Contender, on Chickmaugua Lake, in Tennessee. Sailed more and bought a catamaran in Hawaii. Found blue water and ocean currents would need some serious schooling…no time. Sold it. Can’t seem to get rid of the itch, so, I watch RU-vid and the duck regatta…. Thanks for sharing…from east Tennessee.
Have you downsized to a dinghy yet? go on get one and have more fun , age should not be an issue.....after all you've only got one life( apologies to any Buddhists, thanks for watching, cheers Paul
Another nice dinghy adventure Paul .. looking forward to our summer (July) Salish 100 up here in Puget Sound. I enjoy you new boat n new Skipper interviews as well as campfire briefs. Sail bys describing other boats, rigging n so on. Yours n other skippers menus interesting as well. I like seeing your sunsets n rises as well as the weather chips n challenges Down Under .. seeing mates bathing n swimming is so different from our chilly Puget Sound “Polar Bear dips up here. The challenge of New n fresh stuff is always going to be there. Giving us the humor of each n pitfalls I enjoy. Nurture (bugs, birds, lizards n so so on) sure fatten up .. I’m away listening for the “ bell birds n other “ in the sound track as well as the lapping n swishing of water against n past the haul. With loosing my sweetheart n mate of 56 yrs I’m looking forward to new adventures but without her support.. I enjoy your mention occasionally of your wife too. She’s part of the memories supporting our mouncho (sp) getting out n meeting the challenges of sailing n water. Seeing the one fellow retrieving that old boat n getting out sure gives me the Will to push on n sail my Monty 17’er. Cheers n blessings buddy. Nick
Thanks Nick for those kind words, just trying to share the love ....after all you've only got one life, why not enjoy it, thanks for again watching and taking the time to comment, cheers Paul
Hi Paul. I love your videos. My wife and I owned a beautiful ONJ 770 motorboat. It was lovely but we missed FREEDOM. So we sold it and bought an Camper and a tiny inflatable sailboat. Though I miss my boat I really love going sailing all over Europe like you do in Australia. Have fun guys. 😊
Hi Torisaen please send me a photo of your boat , to sailingkatelouise@gmail.com It's all about getting on the water and having fun. Happy travels, cheers Paul
Hi Paul, thank for your videos. How far south do you come? I am now the proud owner of an Ultimate 18 and would love to join you for a sail. Merry Christmas and happy New Year to you and your family
Well at the moment, Jervis Bay or St Georges Basin but hoping to get down to the Gippsland lakes sometime next year before the Paynesville Classic, cheers Paul
As our lakes freeze over and the ice-fishing folks set up their tents and saké warmers on "my" lake, the only place to go is with the good ship Kate Louise! Cheers and happy new year to Paul and the Sydney Raiders, from a wintry northern Japan.
I live in Georgia USA and we also have cicadas here in our woods it is a real 3D experience with frogs croaking and cicadas making their noises and crickets and fireflies also you feel as if the woods are a psychedelic music venue
What a great variety of boats very interesting to see them all with their different setups . Can you recommend the type of life jacket for dinghy sailing ? Merry Christmas thanks Paul
Yes that has been pointed out more than once....but I think dinghy cruisers are realising a cabin does have benefits. Timber open boats, hand crafted with love are rare. Thanks for watching, cheers Paul
Perfect sailing trip to enjoy from the couch. Glass of red. Balmy Christmas Eve. Thanks so much Paul, I know the effort that goes into these. Wish I could join you- maybe the time will come around as all good things seem to do. Had to content myself with tweaking my standing rigging and learning to fly a drone! I could easily see you guys mobilising yourselves for a trip to Tassie some time. Blessings Chris.
Heh Chris, have you moved to Tassie permanently? We often talk about spending time in Tassie, Martin wants us to do a Raid on the Tamar ( he lived in Tassie for a while) but the ferry is quite prohibitive as you know. Probably about 3K return, which is out of the reach of a lot of guys. Anyway see you at the next Wooden boat festival, are you going to do the Tawe Nunnagah? Gary from the Melbourne Raid did it last year. Have a great Christmas and new year, cheers Paul
@@SailingKateLouiseI grew up in Launceston. We moved up to the sunny coast 13 years ago. My wife’s health meant we needed to get back close to family. Then Sarah Ann turned up in my yard and I knew I had to return her to Tassie. May is a great time and cheaper on the ferry. Bit cooler than you are used to but sublime conditions in the river. The Tamar is underrated. I’m in the recess of changing that. Merry Christmas. Cheers Chris.
Another great video Paul, thoroughly enjoyed watching that. Almost as good as being there. I was surprised to see what I think may be the Investigator #152 Jolly Roger that Dad owned for many years. We did it up, sat it on a new trailer and sold it about 7 years ago. Gary’s Investigator had the same rubber gunwale that we fitted and I’m guessing it’s the same boat? Regards Mark (Cygnet 20 Tide Rider)
Thanks Mate, I've also started sailing Kathleen Gillett a 25 ton Gaff Ketch out of the Australian National Maritime Museum, great fun. Than ks for watching, cheers Paul
No boom, (lugsail) but it doesn't point as well and therefore not as efficient as a Marconi rig. The newer version of the Stornaway 18 will have a soft batten at the foot of the mainsail to act as a soft boom. Thanks for watching, cheers Paul
Thanks Robin, I agree. The change never really eventuated but better safe than sorry. When is the mothership going to host a Pittwater Raid??????????????????? Have a great Christmas and I hope to catch up soon, cheers Paul
@@SailingKateLouise I have to finish my VHF course/license (annoying given I'm a pilot and can talk to Sydney radar but apparently not marine rescue) and get a radio installed before my offshore minimum requirements are complete, then absolutely. Happy new year :-).
