By deciding that Gordon Freeman remains silent during his adventures, Valve also abandoned the possibility of revealing his thoughts and inner life - with good reason. It allows the player to interpret and react on a situation by himself, supporting the identification of the character. But apart from that the fact that Gordon always stays calm and unfazed may lead to the impression that he is cold-blooded, a highly professional war machine, which surely wasn't Valve's intention. So this machinima aims at showing possible feelings and thoughts of the anti-hero, although this alternative ending is not true to the original story.
The machinima is achieved WITHOUT the use of Source Filmmaker and 3D applications. I used console commands and rendered different passes of a shot with the demo editor. Everything seen here is original content of the game, no further 3D animating was done, it's basically just about compositing different things together.

Music: Angelo Milli - A Good Man
Editing hints and tipps:
Walking speed:
I changed the speed of the player with cl_forwardspeed 50; cl_backspeed 50; cl_sidespeed 50 (450 is standard for all). In the end it was not neccessary for this video, because every movement was recreated with the demo smoother, using campaths
DOF:
You can extract a depthmap directly from the game with r_depthoverlay 1. For further control you can change the value of r_showz_power. To my mind "2" is a good value here.
Greenscreen-Script:
I used Greenscreen for the weapon models, so that they can be controlled independetly on a different editing layer. The greenscreenscript uses the fog of the level and overrides it. It doesn't work on some levels though.
alias "green" "green1"
alias "green1" "fog_maxdensity 100; fog_enable 1; fog_color 0 255 0; fog_end 120; fog_start 110; fog_override 1; r_drawbatchdecals 0; r_DrawBeams 0; r_drawdecals 0; r_drawstaticprops 0; r_drawskybox 0; r_drawsprites 0; r_drawparticles 0; alias green green2"
alias "green2" "r_drawbatchdecals 1; r_DrawBeams 1; r_drawstaticprops 1; r_drawdecals 1; r_drawdetailprops 1; r_drawsprites 1; r_drawparticles 1; r_drawskybox 1; fog_override 0; alias green green1"
bind "KEY" "green"
replace key with any key for this effect.
Depending on the wepaon you have, you may have to change the fog_start and fog_end values, so that the end of the weapon doesn't get cut off.
Now of course every near object (nearer than the fog_start value) will still not be tinted green, so you can't do greenscreening in small rooms, with objects and walls being very close to the camera.
By limiting the field of view you can increase the quality of this effect. The weapon will not get affected bythe following script:
alias "zoomhold" "zoomhold1"
alias "zoomhold1" "+zoom; viewmodel_fov 125; alias zoomhold zoomhold2"
alias "zoomhold2" "-zoom; viewmodel_fov 75; alias zoomhold zoomhold1"
bind "KEY" "zoomhold"
replace key with any key for this effect.
you can change the values of "viewmodel_fov" but the first value has allways have to be the second value+50
weapon bob:
You can control the weapon bob with console commands. The following values work only, when the walking speed is set to 50 (commands therefor mentioned already before)
bind "KEY" "cl_bob 0.02; cl_bob_angle_pitch_scale 5; cl_bob_angle_roll_scale 6; cl_bob_angle_yaw_scale 4; wait; cl_bob_lateral_scale 7; cl_bob_vertical_scale 15; cl_bobcycle 0.25; viewmodel_fov 60"
replace key with any key for this effect.
and resetting to standard:
bind "KEY" "viewmodel_fov -1; cl_bob 0.005; cl_bob_angle_pitch_scale 0.4; cl_bob_angle_roll_scale 0.5; cl_bob_angle_yaw_scale 0.3; wait; cl_bob_lateral_scale 0.8; cl_bob_vertical_scale 0.2; cl_bobcycle 0.45; cl_bobup 0.5"
replace key with any key for this effect.

Masterfully done, really shows how sad the Resonance Cascade must've been for everyone involved. I imagine you'd feel pretty terrible if you were in Gordon's shoes and thought it was all your fault. ...And to think Judith *wanted* to be in the Test Chamber that day.
@MegaLittlesoldier
@MegaLittlesoldier 8 лет назад
I don't believe it was only Gordon's fault. There are many factors to work in, such as some of the machinery failing, the purest specimen of Xen crystal and boosting the anti mass spectrometer to 105%

Perhaps she didn't want Gordon to take the blame for the incident, him being the less experienced scientist of the two.

...I don't know about that, just going off of Alyx's tone when she tells you about how she's gone on about her being the one doing the experiment before. I guess that's not a bad theory? But it doesn't seem true based on what's shown. It'd be sweet of Mossman if it was, but that just raises more questions.

Black Mesa did a much better job in setting a melancholy tone than Half-Life, or Half-Life 2 ever did. Also at 2:20, when the flare goes out, you can hear a muffle *thump*.

But the best thing about HL1 and HL2 is that it let the player feels these emotions. It didn't treat the players like idiots by throwing in sappy overdone sad music. It let the player feel everything and it never dumbed anything down. That's what I admire about HL1. It was a MAJOR breakthrough in video game storytelling.

I liked the aproach but the ending just ugh, good video, that would deffinetly would intensified the plot, by showing the character in some stress or feeling regret, you don't need words for that, and you showed it, but that ending, ugh just to dark, still it is an alternate story, so yeah no point in highlighting that XD

The player's reactions are non-canon and Gordon Freeman's true reactions are a canon that we have yet to see. The only time I think it would work is when the player finally relinquishes control of the character, similar to Barney Calhoun in Blue Shift. Perhaps Epistle 3 is the end of Gordon Freeman's story, and now he's just living a life in hiding after being saved from his suicide dive on the Borealis. Maybe a realization of how horrible his circumstances are will be his first overt characterization. Consider this, he's one of the most hated enemies of the Combine and if they ever find Earth again it'll mean trouble, and he's not friends with the G-Man's employers anymore, and if he hadn't been saved by the Vortigaunts, he would have been cosmic dust when the Borealis blew up. Leaves the possibility of an Adrian Shephard or Alyx Vance entry in the future, although I think Shephard would be the safest bet considering he's an unknown quantity. As G-Man said, "no-one is more deserving of a rest". What the hell happened to Barney Calhoun anyway?

Very nice video but why would Gordon suicide? Also, what if Gordon didn't feel that much bad. I mean, he would feel bad why this much to go and suicide. Wouldn't he go and try to save the remaining people and get Black Mesa to where it was before all of what happened?

I used the greenscreen script (desc), to capture the animation, which gets activated, when Gordon puts on the H.E.V Suit. In post production, this footage was split into one for the right and one for the left hand (just rough masks, because we can use chroma keying). Those were animated independetly. I wiggled the position and used time remapping to make it more dramatic, so that it looks like his hands are shaking.
@MaxLohMusic

LOL I am commonly affected by emotional scenes but this just made me fucking laugh. Only a pansy would commit suicide when escape is still possible and A TON OF PEOPLE are relying on him to keep going. Suicide ruins the character we love and instead of having us pity him we just laugh at him. It is not a decision that would realistically be made by someone with such responsibility and hope of saving the world. That's why some people do not like this video.

So you didn't use Source Filmmaker? Why not? That's like making a hole with a screwdriver. Sure, you could do it, but it takes longer, and you can get quicker and better results with drill. Maybe that's not an exact simile, since your video looks just as good as something made in Source Filmmaker... and it's impressive, sure, but I think that's the only benefit. Simply to impress people by making it harder on yourself.

Freeman has no real established personality though; even the very few reactions he gets in-game (trying on his new suit) are extremely minimal. I think Valve indicated he's just an incarnation of the player, much like Myst.
@ConnorGardner
@ConnorGardner 12 лет назад
EXACTLY! I always thought of the story was how he slowly gained his confidence to survive this resonance cascade, and always thought of half-life and half life 2 as a more emotional story than an action pack one. IF i was him, I wouldn't just be like, "woah, I just created a post-apocalyptic scenario, lets go murder some zombies." What Gabe was trying to show that YOU are Gordon Freeman, and he wanted to ask how YOU would react, and I bet the 75% of the haters wouldn't be at all like that. :D

Alternate ending is perfect description for this. No one with such adrenaline amount would commit a suicide. Can you imagine what it would look like if soldiers were sent to a war and they shoot their head with their weapons just because they are afraid ? Maybe they would but after the war because of their ruined mind but not durning combat.

Feeling guilty and being responsible can be two different things. Logically, Gordon would probably know it is not he's fault, but he feels like it, because he was the one pushing the cart and starting the resonance cascade. It was not his fault, but I'm sure I would feel guilty too.

okay, decent video. what's not decent is you fucking jumping on anybody who dares to stray away from your opinion. 'NO, THAT'S NOT HOW YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO VIEW MY THING' is pretty stupid for something you're trying to call art. art is all about how you interpret it, that's where some of the joy comes from it. having somebody stand there and tell you what to think ruins the entire experience. if people say this is an unrealistic portrayal of gordon, that's their opinion, they're entitled to one.
@TheFancyKyle
@TheFancyKyle 11 лет назад
because it's trying to capture the fact that although in the Half-Life world freeman is a hero in reality he is a man facing the fact that he could have prevented all this, try to imagine your entire workplace full of fellow employee's your friends, all killed because of you, Gordan in reality would face the overwhelming grief and guilt that would be associated with this, in reality he is but a single man against a race of monsters, you don't walk away unaffected by that.
@annoyingkraken
@annoyingkraken 11 лет назад
Looking at it as it is. This is beautifully done. Loved the cinematography too. If anyone focused on the guilt feelings and sadness of things, which Gordon did here, suicide would be a very enticing option. I'd say this was realistic. That's why we have counselling for suicidal people, because it's very difficult to counsel yourself. Everyone dead in the facility eliminated the chance for some one to say to Gordon, "Crap happens. This isn't your fault, there is still hope blah blah blah..."
@TrakMiro
@TrakMiro 11 лет назад
Waa waa the mute character who we know nothing about didn't act how we wanted. Nothing of his personality is ever discussed, its based entirely on how you play him. And that's in normal game play anyway, this was just a short film. Gordon is an everyman thrust into something bigger than himself. We are meant to take on the identity of him. Would all of us really have the strength to just carry on knowing we caused all of this horror and death? And, duh, it's not canon. Quit crying about that.
@CooksBooks
@CooksBooks 12 лет назад
None of that affects his dealing with death. He survived the resonance cascade because of the suit. This machinima appears to take place before he went to the xen borderworld anyway. We also don't know at what point this machinima takes place. It could be right after the cascade and so he hadn't even seen a hecu soldier (which in my opinon makes more sense). He had seen all of his work collegues die and he could do nothing to stop it. I feel like that would drive anyone to the limits.
@gmodmoviegroup

I really enjoyed this movie, I understand perfectly well what It all meant. I find it funny how Slamage can say gordon is a pussy, I'm more confused at how a scientist can be so bad ass without training throughout the half life series. :P I don't think Gman will like your ending though, He has big plans for freeman and If this were gordons real intentions Gman (Like the mysterious asshole he is) Would have paused time, Tutted and made him wake up back where he was.
@looseSpark
@looseSpark 12 лет назад
Fair point. I think most people think of him as a bad-ass although I like to add a human dimension-he was "just" a scientist after all (but in my mind, with a back story that made him a little different)-I just think suicide is a step too far. I can certainly imagine him despairing but pulling himself together to be the true hero we all know & love (real heroes have human frailties). No disrespect to the creator intended, BTW, & it does get people thinking. I thought it was made really well.
@se7en00110111
@se7en00110111 12 лет назад
I think of Gordon Freeman as an excellent narrative *device*, but not necessarily a compelling character the way Sam Fisher or Nico Bellic might be. In the days of the original Half-Life and its expansions, it was interesting to see different perspectives of the same events from these silent protagonists. But as we are going on to the 5th game starring Gordon Freeman, it's getting increasingly difficult to write a series from the perspective of the same silent protagonist in my mind.
@XDeathzors
@XDeathzors 12 лет назад
Considering the backstory going into the Black Mesa incident I have to disagree. Gordon was a MIT graduate with an interest in Teleportation. Isaac Kliener read his thesis and got him a job at Black Mesa. It was supposed to be everything he dreamed, but instead he got stuck doing the physical work that the scientists wouldn't do. He was 30 minutes late that morning, because he was losing interest in his job. He should be feeling pissed off about the whole situation.

Nicely put together I like your work ;) ...But I rather think of Freeman as a calm and cool headed genius who completely understands what has happened and what must be done to save humanity...and genius types (that I know) rarely get scared by emotions and such...they are simply on a different level, more calculating and kind of "out of touch" with the rest of us average folk...that's why I think that an alternative ending should be a mad evil genius Freeman that did everything on purpose :)

I can almost hear it after the video ends: Gman: "Mr. Freeman. I'm, afraid I can't let you do, that. In time you will be allowed to, rest, but for now I have further need of your, services? It was not on chance alone that you survived for this long, and would be, unfort-u-nate for many if that changed. It is still your time, Mr. Freeman, remember that."

Great editing. No idea how you pulled this off with such an old game. It really comes to life. The story you created reflects real emotions/situations. I understood it the way you intented to create it. Was a really powerfull peace of art. You are truelly an artist. Hope you keep doing what you do. Much love and appreciation! Namasté
