My father once said " It doesn't cost you anything, to be at least kind to someone." I have to remind myself of that in these days. But it's true. My parents taught me well. I still miss them.

I was told that as well! Also I learned at a young age that even “fake” smiling can psychologically trick yourself into being ina better mood! It makes the world a better place!

FYI in America, "Can I pet your dog?" is a perfectly valid question and 90% of the time will end with you petting the dog and striking up a friendly conversation with the owner.

It is also a very necessary question before petting an unknown dog.

A lot of RU-vidrs come to America and only experience the big well known cities. It’s so nice to see someone go experience the rest of America, the America I know. Love the positive energy.
@nole8923
@nole8923 Год назад
Agreed. The big cities aren’t really representative of America. You won’t learn much about the United States if all you visit is the big cities. NYC is particularly a bad representation of America. It’s dirty and smells bad. I don’t want foreigners to think that is what the rest of the country is like because it’s not. NYC is actually more international than American. You have to be a certain kind of person to tolerate living in NYC. Most Americans aren’t that type of person.

The US obviously isn't perfect - no country is but the dog experience you had is very typical of how people are here. The vast majority of people are welcoming and kind.

It's more that when people here are bad... they're VERY bad these days. The gap between the decent, nice people and the crazies is wider than ever. There were always crazies, but they don't hide anymore. They're vastly outnumbered, but hold huge mindshare in our society. Just traveling around like this? If we're being honest part of her safety comes from her skin color. I know travelers with different skin tones that have had much less pleasant experiences. That said, even so, by default it's not surprising she encountered decent people. It should be the expectation.

This was an awesome episode even if you were in pain during that day. You persevered like a champ! I loved hearing about the dog, and Golden Retrievers have to say hi to absolutely everyone, and that love being shown attention. Any Golden Retriever owner knows that their puppy has to say hi to everyone. Here in the States, people tend to enjoy letting people play with their dogs and getting to pet them. It never occurred to me that you would look at the Amish and see what you have in the older parts of France, but once you said that it totally made sense. They are simply using the old ways that were very common in Europe. I am also happy that you got to have some Popeye's Chicken. It's one of my favorite places to eat if I'm going for fast food. Thanks for bringing us all along for the ride and I can only hope you felt better in future episodes. Keep Smiling!

Amish have several settlements throughout the country. Some communities are more orthodox than others. Many do not have electricity in the home from elsewhere (some utility power grid). Many do not have phones are TVs. They go to school until the 8th grade (there are 12 grades in U.S.). They hold conscientious objector status so do not serve in the military. Should a member need medical attention and help paying costs the whole community takes care of such costs collectively. They speak an old Swiss German dialect and call all foreigners (those outside the community) English. They are industrious and have dry senses of humor. Modern farms in the Midwest are a 1000 acres and have high tech expensive machinery.

At 16:00 you were searching for a word to represent Amish life. An english word that describes the strong familial bond often found in small tight-knit rural towns is “communal”. The more of your life that you allow others to take part in, the more you grow and have to give back to them.

First as always thank you for actually visiting some real places in America instead of just NY and LA. Second French = Amish, got it!! Third that Amish group look extremely touristy as many in Pennsylvania do, however there are dozens and dozens of various groups within the Amish and Mennonite organizations. Thus what you find can vary greatly depending. So glad you are a real traveler that gets out an sees places.

I would say I enjoy these videos because I enjoy getting to see the U.S. through the eyes of someone visiting for the first time. And that's true. But also, even though I'm American, I've never been further east that Minnesota, so you've been seeing things I've never seen in person. Also, so many RU-vidrs who have made a video series of their first trip to the U.S. spent all their time in large cities - New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco. And that's great, but I'm not a big city fan, so it's nice seeing someone make the effort to see more rural and small town parts of America. I'm glad you had a trustworthy friend to be your guide during your trip!

I gotta say that your video made my day :) It's very reassuring to know that we are still a friendly people. in spite of how the political pundits and media outlets want to make us feel we are towards each other. There are those people who hate everyone who doesn't have the same mentality as themselves, but they are a small minority. Unfortunately, we give ignorance the loudest voices and biggest stages, while we suppress anything that would unite us.

Very nice video Marie. It’s nice you got to see some of rural Pennsylvania. I went to college in rural Pennsylvania, but a few hours northwest of the Amish Country. It’s nice you felt a little bit at home in Amish Country, since, as you described it, there were a few similarities to the rural part of eastern France where you grew up. It’s a shame you weren’t feeling well that day, but I think it’s good you got a taste of a unique subculture in the USA. Thanks for bringing us along on your North American trip. I’ve enjoyed it. 🥳🎉🎊🙏🏻👍

Bonjour Marie! Aww, so sorry that you weren't feeling well at this particular time. I've not gone to Amish County, but I've driven thru Pennsylvania many times and I cannot stand the highways that wrap around the mountains and go around and around and around, lol! It's kinda tough at times, but especially in the Winter! Great scenery though. The Amish are essentially Old World Swiss-Germans, so it makes sense that their habitat is similar to what you know in Europe. Yes, Popeye's has very tasty food! Bonne journee! ~Be Blessed

I think what you said about nice kind moments from people, are important. That can make any of our days. it's always good to experience that, and I'm glad you have. That says a lot about people, or a group of people, when those types of encounters are frequent. When I was in the US Navy and we pulled into port in the UK. Most of my encounters with people were positive. This was in 1993. So that experience, has influenced my perception of the UK ever since. When we went to Turkey, it wasn't as good, and that also influenced me, in a different way. We're in part, a product of our experiences, good or bad. I'm glad you've had what appears to be, more good ones that bad during your trip here to the USA.

Hi Marie, this 3rd day of the New Year!!! What a wonderful gift for New Year's to watch your Amish reaction video 🤗! I am so very sorry you were suffering pain throughout this day 😥, and yet you powered through it anyway, wow 🙏. Your overnight stay was in a beautiful Painted Post hotel, with a pretty lawn out the window, and with a big desk and table, and even a microwave! The breakfast banana & muffins with coffee looked good too :). I loved your Niagara Falls, Canada sweatshirt 💕, and you looked so excited and happy to start. The drive was a beautiful trip through low lying clouds, fog, and very colorful tree-covered hill country (even saw a Jurassic Park Jeep,😂 lol). What a cute dog who loved you, as all animals do, and thank you so much for sharing your thoughts about the kindness & friendliness you saw there and through your USA trip. Those moments are very meaningful, and it is wonderful and nice to hear that people gave those to you ❣ The town you drove through had lovely old buildings, and the Amish Farm and House had beautiful flowers and bushes around it 🌺🌼, with the two suspender-wearing boys walking in front of you. They had so many nice things out, like pumpkins, an old pump, cast iron kettle, old farm implements, fountains, barns, benches, and so many animals. Those goats really loved leaves 😊 - curious! That pyramid-shaped bush, with red, white, and green was lovely, with that cool top as well! The animal pictures were nice, and I loved the two horse-&-carriages you saw. The hot day must have made your pain harder to handle (so sorry 😥😥}. You showed a longhorn steer, along with the turkeys and donkey, very cool. The one-room schoolhouse was very cool, with beautiful wooden desks, kids drawings, a nice poster of good rules, and the old-style clock. It was fun to see the bonnets those ladies were wearing too. That bus tour seemed nice (and shady), and it drove past crops and barns and many farm buildings, that big house with the clothes line, pumpkin stand, and wow - Camels!!!! 😲😊 You showed their food bins (nice variety), the two interesting cycles, sheep, wooden hand-made toys, the stick horse, rocking horse, rice pitch game, crib (usually all hand-made by Amish). I loved your rat-pop-up box 😲🤗😂- so clever and cute!! I am glad you did enjoy the quiet peace there, despite your pain. I also loved your observations, relating to your French countryside home and rural life, where you see these things as normal. The Amish came from Europe and brought their Old-World ways with them, and they shunned modern conveniences, preferring the ways of a tight-knit community, helping each other, which you said you saw 🥰 (have each other's back - Yes!). I love that and that you are familiar with all those things, making you feel right at home among them. I have an Amish Furniture Store near me, with all their hand-made furniture of way higher quality than anything in modern stores - just beautiful!!! I agree with your assessment of Target, and I will go and try some Louisiana chicken at my local Popeyes, now that I know you enjoyed it 😊(tired Marie, yawning). I'm sorry the Paris store closed :( . Marie, that was a cool shot of the K-9, Sniffers van, with police dogs that help search for criminals and for clues, and even bodies that are so hard to find. Thank you kind Marie for the lovely video, despite how bad you felt, and you did such a wonderful job sharing these things you experienced with us ❤🤗. Please take care, 🙏🥰🤗!

Advice for would-be travelers. Distance = time +money. The distance from Paris to Warsaw is approx. 1587 Km. The distance from Houston, Tx to El Paso, Tx is 1198 km. The distance from El Paso, Tx to New Orleans, La is 1755 km. Weather in the U.S. moves generally from West to East but it moves diagonally on a line parallel to the Ohio River, and West to East. Cold air from Canada, warm air from the Gulf of Mexico collides with weather moving West to East (i.e. tornadoes and weather fronts). Temperatures in U.S. Summers can get to 36 degrees centigrade or higher during the day. There is a reason Americans use ice, ac, and ceiling fans. Elevation can determine temperature and mini-micro climates. E.g., it can be 34 C in Denver in July and snow in Rocky Mountain National Park 70 miles away (143 Km). The highest elevations in California and the country's lowest elevation in Death Valley are fewer than 100 miles apart. There are vast areas of the U.S. like Big Bend Nat'l Park and Highway 50 in Nevada where it is in-advisable to travel alone. There are coyote, venomous snakes, scorpions, cougars, bear, and wolves in the U.S. depending on the geographic area. The number 1 problem with European visitors is getting them to understand distance. Driving for only 350 miles before overnighting is not going to get you far across the American landscape.

I live about 20 miles away from the Amish farm you visited in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania! It was interesting to hear your thoughts. Most local residents stay away from the tourist areas due to the traffic. The Amish here are seen as a novelty. However, their horse-drawn buggies are a major annoyance on back country roads and are a major hazard. It's something of a double standard -- the roads in Pennsylvania are funded by the fuel tax and Amish don't pay this tax but they still use our public roads anyway. The other big issue for many people is that they don't volunteer to serve in the U.S. military because of their beliefs. However, they live in a country where they depend on others to fight to defend their freedom of religion. Isn't that a bit self-serving?

You saw the Tourist side of the Amish. The Amish do not use electricity, or motors/engines. Everything is done by hand and with the help of animals. The are a very religious group, and live a "simple" life (it isn't very simple really).

Your videos are so well-edited, but most of all, I like that you are so thoughtful in your comments about the things that you see. So far one of my favorites was when you commented about petting the Golden Retriever at a gas station, and what that simple moment said about America and the American people.

The parallels between the Amish and French countryside were interesting. Sorry about your pain, you shared a great video with us in spite of it. You're so nice Marie who wouldn't be nice to you as well!

Sorry you were in pain that day. It was a good video regardless. Did you know that Popeye's wasn't named for the cartoon character, but for Popeye Doyle in the movie The French Connection? The man who founded the company was a fan of the film. So when you tried Popeye's, it was another French connection.

YES my dear, one thing we Americans have is loads of room and land... And once again many of us treat other people with honor and respect. I must admit and I am painting with a wide brush here.. Most Americans love to share their pet with you.. I like dogs better these days than I care for many people.The dogs are usually smarter and better behaved than some people... Plus the dogs have better manners... A happy & safe New Year to you & yours!!!!! Continue to explore and learn about our nation and behavior.. And lastly, thank you for traveling to West Virginia, (my home state)... Take care and thank you for sharing so much with us. I for one adore you & your channel. You young lady are special in so many ways..... Happy New Year and take care....

There's an Amish community by where my grandma used to live. They taught her how to quilt. My grandparents and them bartered for canned and other types of food.some of the nicest people no met but a bit too strict on their lady folk.

I was hoping to see you finish off some Amish desserts, maybe some shoofly pie . We have an Amish store about 15 miles from my house. I don't get to shop there much but I usually get some of their sourdough bread and their prune cake (which tastes nothing like prunes) Sorry you were hurting on your day there, have a feeling we would have seen more interaction with those cute animals you mentioned. Hope your year has started out good and will get better 0

What makes the Amish special is they don't believe in electricity or cars or modern conveniences. No tvs, radios, refrigerators, nothing electric. They're told what to wear and how to act, how to wear their hair and clothes, etc., and if they don't obey the rules they are punished by shunning - being avoided by other Amish. Anyone having contact with them while they're shunned could also be punished. There's a good tv show called Return To Amish where some young people leave the Amish life for modern day living, and how they react. I'm glad you went on the tour because the Amish Farm looked very commercialized. Nothing at all like the homesteads. I'm sorry you spent the day in pain. Maybe you should carry a bottle of Tylenol with you. 😉 Thank you for posting. Very enjoyable! 💞

Hello Marie, I wish I would have known that you would have been in Amish country I could have told you what places to see and where to eat. The farm you went to next to Target is a big tourist attraction. There is much more to see and explore besides that location, away from tourist. The country side in this area is very beautiful as you saw. Great video as always 🙂, thank you.

I live in Northern Indiana where we also have a lot of Amish. It's cool to live with people of an entirely different culture, although I don't appreciate it when their horse poop is everywhere I drive or walk lol.

Good video, as usual! Almost all pet-owners are happy to have people pet their dogs (or cats; mine love getting the attention!). If somebody tells me "hey, get away from my dog!" ... I figure that *that* is someone with 'an issue'! (They probably don't trust people, just in general.) Sorry you were having an 'off day'; but you did a good job anyway!

Marie, when you were in Toronto you were about 1 hour east of Waterloo Region where there is a large community of Mennonites. This community is similar yet different to the Amish community. There are different Mennonite orders that practice different religions, lifestyles, way of dressing etc. Some are not allowed to use electricity or modern technology while others can. Many still use horse and buggy while others are allowed to use cars. In some instances, cars are used but the shiny parts (bumpers etc) must be blacked out. Many stores and strip malls in the outer areas of the cities have shelters in their parking lots to accommodate the horses. It is very interesting to delve into other cultures.

Further advice to the travellers to North America. Purchase a Rand McNally Road Atlas from Walmart or a truck stop. It will explain the American/Canadian Highway System, provide scenic routes, restrictions, and highway services via symbols located in the table of contents. Get a map of the US. Find Winnipeg, Canada and Houston, Tx and draw a straight line with a pencil. East of this line population, goods and services are denser and more frequent whether in Canada or the U.S., and West of it less people and fewer services. Populations are primarily on coast whether Atlantic, Pacific, or Gulf of Mexico (so in the middle fewer hotels, gas stations, repair centers, convenience stops and so on.). The Plains have the most sparse populations along with Wyoming and Montana. Weather is more extreme in the U.S. There are National Park passes available to all people whomever the traveller that allow access to most National parks for one annual fee. Learn to smile.
