Excellent video of poet Robert Bly being interviewed by Bill Moyers in 1990.
They discuss what it means to be a man in today's society - the pains of being a man and the things that can be done to heal them.

“A warrior is one that pursues a task until it is finished, for a cause that is transcendent to himself”. - Robert Bly
@longlakeshore

I never understood Robert Bly. Here's why. I had the nicest dad in the world. He played with his kids--all five of us, talked to us, read to us and gave us tremendous freedom, respect and affection but did not bring his disappointments home from work probably because he didn't have any. Nor did he demand respect because he was not insecure in himself. A WWII vet and bronze star winner who studied religion and philosophy on the GI Bill he was the most contented human being I've ever met. The best man I've ever met. Several of my friends had harsh closed dads like Bly's. I felt sorry for them. All my cousins said he was their favorite uncle. When I was in high school and college little kids in the neighborhood still knocked on the door and asked if he could come out and play. He had an ego but it wasn't a fragile one. He never hit us. Never had to. Rarely was he angry. The threat of his disappointment alone was enough to keep us in line. When I got a little older I asked dad's sisters why he was that way. They said he was just like their father. Oh what fathers pass on to their sons!

@longlakeshore
@longlakeshore 3 года назад
@@DoomGappy1994 On masculinity. Most of what is defined as masculine and feminine is determined by the culture in which a child is raised. One example is an old nursery rhyme I was taught as a child: "Girls are sugar, spice and everything nice. Boys are snips, snails and puppy dog tails." This taught children what they were expected to be based on their sex. Little boys and girls quickly conform to this standard. Those who don't will be criticized. This creates the expectation that men must be hard and strong while women must be soft and empathetic. The problem with this is that those characteristics are personality traits common to both sexes. This leads to men to repress empathy & sympathy. It leads women to repress their strength & mastery. The fact is these personality traits are neither masculine or feminine. They are HUMAN. We all have them. The danger is repressing them. Myself and my self esteem. My self esteem is does not come from outside myself. I do not care what others think of me or how they judge me. My relationship to other people. As best I can I keep an open, non judgmental mind about all people especially those I don't like or aren't easy to be around. Other than that I receive others with hospitality and let them go in peace.

The book was extremely painful to read because it focused on everything I missed out on not having a father growing up. On the plus side, it altered my perception of masculinity. I realized that I was embracing a phony masculinity that has destroyed men, a meaningless one that was being sold by soulless profiteers.

I thanked my dad for all the good and not so good about one month before he passed. I thank God that I was able to speak to him before the day of his calling. It brought me untold peace that none of my siblings had. I know that he left this world knowing that he did a great job raising me and my siblings. That was my peace and his as well.

Amazing. astonishing and brilliant! Bly has opened doors into my psyche I only suspected were slammed shut.......more importantly, he offers the insights required to open them, begin to connect with deep grief, to know why the grief is there, and, what it takes to heal it.........to weep, to breathe and to learn to live. Michael Meade's work on Fate and Destiny, also pivotal. Many thanks for this posting to Tim Robins.

My father never attempted suicide, but he often told me that he would prefer to be dead than living another day. That is brutal. I have struggled hard to recover from many episodes of depression. A distant, false mother didn't really help either. But I am determined to rediscover life. How are you nowadays? Thanks!
