TLDR: Polyethylene glycol. This video is for educational purposes and should not be used as medical advice. Talk to your doctor about what’s best for you! There is so much to know about constipation and these are the absolute basics
(not sponsored by any of the medications mentioned in this video. I previously did a MiraLAX sponsored video but this video is entirely based off of my own opinions and I received no compensation for any of the statements)

Thank you so much for making this content doc! As someone who has struggled with low motility and constipation due to combinations of stress and SIBO treatments, I get sooo frustrated when people just brush off my issues by saying Oh big deal, eat some fiber. It's not like that

Yep. Gotta love when people who literally just learned you have *insert thing here* think they can solve your problem in two seconds. Like yep, I've been dealing with this for years, been to multiple different doctors, but yeah, I'm sure that thing your mom's best friends cousins daughters girlfriend tried will be the solution to my problem.

Yay for Miralax! It is so gentle, pediatricians can prescribe it for babies with constipation. And unlike stimulant laxatives, it doesn't cause painful bowel cramping.

I suffered with chronic constipation (and problems urinating) for years and have tried almost everything. Using urinary catheters have completely changed my life and also completely cured my constipation, who knew a few litres of retention was blocking everything. It also helped me to maintain weight and even put some on for once! I just need to find a cure for my gastric, pyloric and duodenum ulcers now - been treating them since August and they’re still hanging on like bad neighbours...!!!

Thank you so much for this! I had my first experience with severe constipation after being on opioids long term, and not bothering to take laxatives as recommended by my doctor. I had a wedding to go to 2/20/2020 - and had a massive hard bowel movement that could not come out without tearing something. I sat thru the trip to the out of town wedding, wedding, and reception in extreme pain. It took many trips to the bathroom - a lot of manual breakup of the poop - and a lot of tears - before the massive poop was cleared out. I never realized there were Rx medications. I should talk to my doctor about that!
@microcase
@microcase 2 года назад
Which opioids are you taking? You could try talking to your doctor about trying the mix of Oxycodone and Naloxone (if it’s available), it can mitigate the constipating effect and you won’t need to take 2 medications

As someone who suffers from IBS-C, I completely agree. My GI NP told me to try to mix things up to see what helps the most. Right now I'm doing a mixture of all three. Might I also add that maintaining a healthy diet and managing stress are really important.

Based on a conversation I once had with a ward secretary, I often use hot apple juice, (apple juice heated to the temperature of hot tea or coffee, not spiced). It is both soothing and effective. In the case of long standing bouts of constipation, 1/2 & 1/2 apple juice/prune juice with a few tablespoons dark berry juice (blueberry, cherry, pomegranate, cranberry), again heated to hot tea temps can get things moving without triggering cramping or diarrhea.

IBS-C here, too, and stress is such a trigger! I'm finding a low-fodmap diet and magnesium bisglycinate with enough water has helped me a lot. The magnesium has been wonderful as well since it seems to help my sleep and reduce the number of nightmares, but that's just my experience. Finding that balance really is an art.

I recently went through 2 major surgeries and the painkillers caused a fair amount of constipation. It’s so nice to see this in such a short but thorough form! I’ve struggled with constipation on and off throughout my life, but several years ago I went through such an extended bout of problems that my doctor (after we explored other medications, checking for any obstructions, and fiddling with both low and high fiber/more exercise/more fluids) truly did just clear me to use stimulant laxatives as often as I needed to remain comfortable. Luckily, shortly after I realized that lots of people are already having something that helps stimulate things every day: caffeine! A hot cup of coffee or tea or, in a pinch, a caffeinated water additive has kept me on track for years now with only a few instances of needing to supplement with medication.

I take psyllium most days to help keep me regular, as my guts can be a little sensitive to dietary changes, even positive ones. Psyllium also helps bulk up runny stool as well, but if stool being too solid is your issue, magnesium citrate is another great supplement to take because it helps bring water to the bowels to increase movement. Always make sure to drink plenty of water with any of these, however! Water intake is a key component in your poop, as well!

Your informational videos are very good and helpful. (And your comedic videos are so funny!!!). I think the issues you address are common ones for older adults. I find that as I age, it gets harder and harder to understand/grasp what people are saying when they speak quickly. Rapid-fire speech is frustrating. If you would slow down, it would be much appreciated. Or put instructions in your video description that explain how to slow speech down on you tube videos - if that is possible.

Colace as a surfactant is not going to do much for a large hard stool, just like putting soap on hard stuck on food in a pot isn't going to soften it up. all that quickly. Its really more of a maintenance medication that helps disperse fat and cellular membranes to prevent the constipation in the first place.

My ibs is not just one state or the other, and my intestines contract very tightly and it's like I could be sitting on one side of the room and on a bad day they can hear the sound my gut makes as food moves, it's not fun and is very painful. So I'm on an older medicine to help slow the movement and cramping your intestines do to a gentler and less painful degree. @@Katsukisaud No offense meant, it’s just my opinion that you should not pick a medical speciality or medical work in general just “for the money”. Because just about everything except being a GP can get pretty good income if you become a proceduralist (hell, I know someone from family medicine working as an Aesthetician making 750k+). I’m not saying it doesn’t matter, but if you really care about making a significant amount of money there are MANY professions with a much higher level of income versus work input. I can almost guarantee that if you pick a speciality based more on how much you will make versus what you might really want to spend a giant chunk of your time doing for the next 20+ years that your overall experience of life will suffer. Also, you can very easily look up the average income through most speciality associations so not something you should need a RU-vid video to walk you through? Xylitol has a random activation point which makes it too inconsistent for use. Some folks can eat it all day long, nothing happens. Some folks are so sensitive they'll be screaming on a toilet for hours. Worse it's activation can have a tipping point. You could eat three sticks of gum for years and the day you take a fourth, you're running to the toilet. It's also extremely painful and lasts much longer than is ever necessary. Note, a lot of this is painful personal experience, but some is just from relating to others who did the haribo challenge and regret it.
