Congratulations, Jeff, on your beautiful Laguiole knife! There is a saying in French, meaning "Closed silently will live longer". Many of these traditional knives lack a blade stop in the handle and you might damage your blade, when you let it snap in. Enjoy this beautiful knife! Greetings from Germany! Andi

Hi. Laguiole is a small town in south of France, and it give the name to the knife. People who live in this town says Layole, without the "g". Forge of Laguiole is one of the multiple brands who made this knife, not the only one, but it's the only one based in Laguiole. Regards

The pattern on the handle is a cross. One other thing about them, be careful on closing because they are prone to blade wrap. It's just the way they are made because they lack a kick on the blade.

When I was in France in 1981, I was given a knife. At the time I was told there a tradition (?) where if you were given a knife, you would give back a coin. The value of the coin did not matter. Something about "so that our friendship will not be cut by me". Too bad the sender was anonymous. Anyone know more about this tradition?

Hi Jeff, That pattern on the handles is called a “shepherds cross “. People in France used to stick the knife in a log and prey to the cross if no church was around.

If you notice the pin pattern on the handle, it forms a cross, so you can stab it on the table and pray and give thanks before your dinner 😮

Mostly used by laborers on the farmlands in France in the old days. Most farmlands have/had little "houses" (brick doghouse style) on them where farmhands used to spent te night rather than travelling back to their houses. Stick the knife in the ground and pray.

Don’t let the blade snap close the edge on traditional léguele knives hit the spring and will dull the edge faster . Btw but I have a French knife collection from laguiole en aubrac and fontenille-pataud and I think the later is the only one you can slam the blade close

Exactly, Fontenille Pataud has a blade stop at most of their knives. The only exeption I know is the Chamois, that I have 🤨

The funny thing is that this knife is made by several companies and people, I have one from mastersmith g.david, but also other manufacturers, the French law is different than many other countries, you may cary a pocketknife in France but only if it is a swiss army knife, an opinel or a laguiole, you gotta love those french for that one

I love mine. I bought a small flashlight belt case at Smokey Mountain Knife Works that fits it perfectly, has a belt loop. Beautiful, historical. And edc usable! What more could you want in a knife.

Be careful! Not all Laguiole knives are the same. This specific brand of Laguiole, Forge de Laguiole, represents the pinnacle of quality in the Laguiole cutlery business. Laguiole found at TJ Maxx or HomeGoods are often replicas that are produced in China. Remember, Laguiole is not a brand but a style of cutlery ◡̈

Thanks for pointing this out, It’s a super common misconception. The stuff from Marshall’s or TJ Maxx isn’t even in the same galaxy as Forge De Laguiole in terms of quality. The one Jeff got is the best of the best (maybe excluding some customs). Some other good brands are Laguiole en Aubrac and Arbelete G. David.

Nice looking knife. FYI in French a word ending in 'er' is typically pronounced with a hard A sound like the 'ay' at the end of the English word 'day' (somme-all-ee-Ay instead of sommel-eer). The word 'de' (translates to 'of' or 'from' in English) is pronounced as a short D sound without a distinct vowel, like the D at the start of words like 'dusty' or 'done', unless it's the word 'des' (which is plural), which has a silent S but changes the sound to a hard A sound again, so it's pronounced like 'day' is in English - unless the word after it starts with an S sound, in which case you add an ending Z sound to blend the two words together as you pronounce them. When you see words like d'Anville, it's because 'de' loses its 'e' if the next word starts with a vowel, but you can use that pronunciation as a guide for how to say it when it's written as 'de'.

The cross on the handle has an interesting story (allegedly) it is as follows... the people in that region of France were largely shepherds and would take their lunch/ food usually of crusty bread and cheese to their fields while tending the flocks. They would set up their food and being devout and religious would put the knife point down in the bread or the cheese and they would then have a cross to pray their thanks and devotion(s) to God. (And it is also questionable if it is actually a bee or a fly.. being near the flocks and all the dung there were always hoards of flies bussing around.. lol)

If you're going to edc it. Please look at how to close them. Ha ha ha, twice now I felt and heard that edge hitting the backspring you will get blade wrap letting it shut by itself.

Do you think these were designed so that when you close it the edge comes in contact with the inside of the knife? It doesnt, I closed it how it was meant to be closed even if I closed it slowly if it makes contact it would still make contact ruyining the edge...

@@chanabhaji2726 There doesnt need to be a producing ricosso as long as internally nothing comes in contact with that edge...yes normally thats what stops the blade inside, but Ill have to take a look at it closer ive now slammed the blade closed several times with zero edge deformation...

DO NOT SNAP THIS STYLE OF KNIFE CLOSED! It has no blade stop. Letting it snap shut WILL damage the tip of the blade. The appropriate way to close it is to pinch the nail nick and control the blade to a soft close.
