I see the truck has a Detroit for a motor. Detroits like their RPMs to have power. If you up shift around 1800 and down shift about 1300, you’ll always be in the correct rpm range. Running down the road, you should be between 1500 and 1600 rpms to maintain fuel economy and power. Good luck and stay safe on the roads!

That's why you check coolant before use. When the engine cools off, the engine and cooling system shrinks a little, which can cause slight leakage. If it's leaking when hot, that is usually worse.

Ya Laura a couple things. Cold leaks are not uncommon. When the engine cools and shrinks it might cause a small leak. If you can locate it you might be able to tighten it enough to stop it. Good eye on catching that one. On your shift the RPM will change 300 - 500 RPM up or down depending on the gearing of the truck. So you are on the right track there too. The backing thing can be as hard as you want to make it. If you watch the mirrors and put your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel just move your hand to the side you want to turn to. The biggest no no is to turn to much to fast, but I think you have the basics going for you. Have a good season.

Oh yeah if you are having issues driving after stopping on a steep hill and have a heavy load use a wheel chock chained and clipped to the rear of the trailer. This will allow you to engage the clutch and get moving without stalling or rolling backwards. Once you get moving the wheel chock will follow you. Get to the top and disconnect the wheel chock from trailer and be on your way. But then again Nebraska ain't known for 6%grades.

Also, Ms Laura, the "Johnyy Bar" (trailer brake control) is not for parking. If trailer brakes are set, the handle won't make any difference any way, becase the brakes set when the red knob is out. Also, old timer tip: when slowing down, use the trailer brakes, with the Johnny bar. Easier to get under the trailer to adjust brakes, if you don't have auto adjusters, than get under the tractor, and crawl around the differentials. Jake brake sounds cooler with straight pipes, but sure is noisy when just cruising. Does save just a bit of fuel, though

Lots of respect and wonderful job driving that rig!! Just a little advice as you’re getting comfortable with it. When backing up try to use your mirrors only, position them so you can see the whole rig even turned. If you don’t have spot mirrors, grab some, they’re cheap. Don’t form a bad habit of looking out the back window. In the down season, take her out in an open solid field empty and practice backing up. Both blind side and driver side. But awesome job!!!!!

Laura, the easiest way to open the hood on semi trucks is to stand beside the front tire, either side, and push it up. You can let it fall completely open, it won't hurt anything. When closing that hood, it's ok to lift it from the front and let it fall closed. It is safer for you to do what I described than staining & struggling to open/close from the front. That's how I opened/closed truck hoods for 28 years/3 million safe miles in trucking. Love your channel. Hello to Grant.

7:48 the simplest way to explain shifting, assuming your running a 10 speed transmission is to shift by the numbers. What I mean by that is, for example, 15 mph, 1+5=6, so at 15mph, you should be entering 6th gear and so on. The best way to learn rpm control, what they teach in most schools and on the cdl test is to keep the rpms between 1000 and 1500. So run the truck up to 1500 and go into neutral, then allow the rpms to fall to 1000, then shift into the next highest gear. (Every truck is different and they all have a unique sweet spot they like to shift in and out at.) Down shifting is the reverse of this, allow your rpms to drop to 1000, then go to neutral, blip the throttle to push it up to 1500, then go for the next lowest gear. Hope this helps!! Also, even though your not required to have a cdl you may still want to aquire a cdl manual from the state of Nebraska as there's a lot of useful info in it that can help you out and keep you out of trouble! Your doing awesome Laura, happy to share the highways and byways with ya!

Laura, you are doing great driving that tractor-trailer. Just a couple of tidbits of information, In almost every class A truck the RPM split is 400 so throttle control is key. If you’re up shifting drop the rpm 400 between shifts. For example, 3rd gear @ 1900 rpm clutch in take it out of gear clutch out let the rpm drop to 1500, clutch in (holding the rpm @ 1500 put it in gear, release clutch. If you’re not using the clutch, 1900 out of gear drop rpm to 1500 in gear. When I was training had a sticker on the dashboard that gave the speed and rpm for each gear. That might help if you want to try it. It’s different for almost every truck trailer combination I’ve driven. For example: 3rd gear @1500 rpm 10 mph 4th gear @1500 rpm 15 mph However you go about it the best way to learn is getting in there do it. Seat time is everything. Great job, keep it up 🎉

Ok Laura . Now I’m gonna give you a little schoolin on how you can use that hand brake valve that goes to the trailer. When you’re on a hill loaded or empty and you have to takeoff and you’re stopped with your foot on the brake pull the hand brake valve on that will only set your trailer breaks push in the clutch put it in low gear now take your foot and put it on the throttle it won’t go any ware until you release that hand valve . Now let the cutch out slow until you hear the motor just start to pull down keep your right foot on the throttle now start releasing the hand valve and at the same time a little more clutch release and just a hair of more throttle you should be rolling forward by now hand valve fully released clutch all the way out foot on the throttle congratulations you just passed the starting on a incline test . Hope this helps . You can also practice this procedure on flat ground loaded or empty, it works every time and it will keep you from breaking a drive line . 😊

The "Farmer" exemption for CDL is almost every state - and definitely all the major farming states. The only times it gets sticky is crossing state lines like southern WI to Debuke, IA grain elevator, but most of those states also have exemptions for those circumstances.

I’m an OTR truck driver from Alabama and ty for what you do and the content. Now days it’s hard on us cause most ppl in there cars don’t care about us or our safety. But it’s a good career and it keeps the lights on. Your doing a pretty good job with that truck. Glad you know it won’t stop on a dime. Have fun be careful out there and just remember that jake break sounds good.

Great job. It’s great to see you have a young hire like Gauge. I was fortunate to start young on the family farm ...great work experience.

You should change the hoses of coolant and take the leak out! Always take the reb a litle hight for shifting! Both of you are amazing!!! Keep going on!!!
