No one needs to take my advice, but usually we should have reasons for our decisions beyond "because..." So let's discuss this customer's scenario and you tell me if you come to a different conclusion than either he did or I did.
Good Works Tractors is happy to be sponsored by Rim Guard Solutions! This is perhaps the most well-known ballast brand on the market today. Rim Guard goes right inside your tires, so it's out of the way, it doesn't freeze, and doesn't corrode. It's made from natural materials, so it's safe around livestock and pets if it spills out. Rim Guard liquid ballast adds more weight to the back side of your tractor improving stability, loader performance, and power to the ground. Find your closest dealer at bit.ly/3d0whX0

I was thinking the same thing as another person pointed out - doesn't want DPF. With that acreage I would go 35-40 horse to easily get ac/c and heat and use larger implements. A friend of mine bought a Mahindra open station (around 35hp) about 7 years ago. He owns the house where he grew up in northern Michigan and uses it like a cabin on 60 acres. Now he is 78 and for the past couple of years has said many times he wished he bought a cab tractor because he just can't tolerate the cold doing snow removal. I think you nailed it again Courtney! You keep knocking them out of the park.

I think your recommendation was spot on. People sometimes already have their minds made up before they even ask you. Sometimes all you can do is give your advice when asked for and then walk away. I used to sell AG equipment & some of my clients were like that. In the end I’d sell them what they wanted but warned them that they were buying against my advice. Eventually those customers did come back admitting they were wrong and had to upgrade anyways. It used to drive me nuts!!

Good content here. Thanks. BTW, I worked in engineering for 40+ years and if you ask a particular type of engineer "What time is it?" they will tell you how to design a watch. My point is, some people just want to hear themselves talk or something to kick around even though their mind is already makeup. - N Idaho -

I have a 1025r and it fits my needs perfect. I have graded my gravel driveway with a box blade and clear snow with the loader bucket. Once a year I cut back the 11 acres of field grass with a D54 inch under deck mower, which I did need for the lawn around the house. This year the field grass did got a little out of control and I am looking at a 48 inch rotary mower for next year. Get a lot of info from you and tractor time with Tim. Keep up the great videos.

Some people just want you to tell them that they are right. For mowing that many acres, I wouldn't want a hydrostat transmission. A gear drive or shuttle shift would be a much better option. Keep up the good work.

personally I think you have the right idea. It's the way I'd go if money is no object. I have the LS MT342 HC. I paid the extra for the cab because I'm 79 and wanted some comfort both summer and winter and needed the power because of the trees I have to cut. He will soon find out its a long day cutting that much with a four foot Brush hog. I only cut about 5 acres and no way would I use a four foot.

I have just over 5 acres with blackberries and rye grass. The field is somewhat hilly. I bought a 45 HP utility tractor and run a 6 foot brush hog. It has a loader that will lift 3500 pounds with a skid steer quick attach, 6 foot bucket, grapple, and forks. It replaced a Massey Ferguson 35 and 5 foot mower from the 1960s. It would take forever to mow the field with a 4 foot mower and 25 horsepower as even the 35 bogged down mowing blackberries on an up slope pass.

I presently use a 60 inch rotary cutter on my 1025r. Does a great job horsepower wise and it's fantastic to get into corners tight spaces etc. I love the fact that the mower is significantly wider than the tractor. Now I wouldn't even consider another 4ft cutter. That being said. I would still prefer a "wider than tractor" cutter if I went up in size or horsepower.

I can appreciate having time on ones hands. But with that much land (not only the 41 acres, but 300+) he's very likely going to find something he'd like to do, but can't, cause he doesn't have the horsepower to do it. I've got 40 acres, and only half is not too rugged to drive a tractor on, and I already know I'm going to want more than 25HP when I get to buying. As with trailers, or tractors, or pole barns, go bigger than you think cause you'll regret it if you don't. What's the saying? Buy once, cry once?

No answer for your query, but since I mow lots myself. Not sure how much I mow for sure and the reason is because I never finish mowing. Each time I start, I just head for the tallest grass and mow until I run out of daylight or whatever reason I find to stop mowing. I use either a 72 inch finish mower, a 63 inch ford H918 flail mower, 60 inch brush hog, or a Coroni 59" flail mower behind a 35 hp Kioti. Lots of good reasons why I have so many . So if he is really mowing 40 acres I doubt he will be able to keep up with the new growth using either the 48" or the 60" on a 25 hp tractor. He might just be like me. I don't care...I just like being outdoors doing something.

Sometimes people just want validation like you said. I was caught up with staying at the 25HP because of the DEF so I had that in my head: BUT I wised up when I went from a 1 series to a 3 series. About the only thing I wish for more HP on my acreage is when I attach my split-fire chipper. He may be the likely candidate to buy a tractor and then trade it in after a year of mowing 41 acres. I wouldn’t have bout anything smaller than a machine which could pull a bigger mower on that one!

When mowing in between rows, you must also take into account limbs. On pine trees, they start coming out pretty quickly and then you’re fighting limbs as you go, especially when the trees are 5-6 years old. I would rather drive directly down the center of the rows with an 8-9ft cutter than be pelted in the face with limbs mowing both ways with a 4-5ft mower. Most of the folks who plant pines around here don’t mow between them though. They plant them thick so they grow straight and then get them thinned a few times as they mature. Then once they’re about 10-15 years old or so you just do controlled burns every year, and they look like a park when you’re done.

Well I’m not the compact Tractor expert but my first impression was probably 45 hp with no cab so we could get underneath tree limbs. seems when i run a 5 foot mower with even my 60 hp it uses all the power it has.

Just a comment on the "hand planting" of trees. In the south that means a crew comes in and plants trees, usually pine seedlings, where machine planting wouldn't work. I had a 30 acre plot that was inaccessible for a machine but was hand planted by 12 guys in less than four hours.

Your thought on using a large enough machine to swing a 60" mower made sense. I value my time too much to live on a tractor so i would use an 8ft mower and call it good. Except 90% of the time once I plant an area I don't even bother mowing anymore.. game over let it all grow together and here in SC you will actually end up with more trees!!

General calculation; equipment width in feet times working speed divided by 10. Example, 4 foot mower working 3 mph divided by 10, 3x4=12, 12/10=1.2 acres per hour. Then consider fuel consumption per hour, time needed to refuel.

After spending many hours on 15 hp tractor (Bolens / Iseki) with 4ft to 6ft finish mowers you are spot on with larger mower and tractor combination staying out of the bottom end of the mower requirement. The only thing I would recommend different is a 60in -72in flail mower with proper sized tractor as those trees are going to drop leaves and branches non stop. Even the little saplings that come up need to be tamed. Shredder vs Flail, take the flail and don't look back.

They drive you crazy sometimes don’t they 😂😂. In all actuality he will only cut between the trees 2-3 summers by that time the pine trees will have over grown into the open area between tree rows that you won’t need to mow them anymore at all due to the sunlight being blocked to the ground. My preferred set up for this chore and owning that much total acreage with $$$$ being no issue would be a 110 hp -- 125HP full electronic power shift transmission , cab , AWD tractor with an 8’ flail mulching mower with hydraulic side to side shift.. you will only need to make one pass after the first year due to the fast tree growth/spreading out and up.

Nothing wrong with having two tractors if you can afford it. I have a massey 1825e with the front loader, third function, and backhoe. It does everything I want on my six acre homestead. We have a lot going on, firewood, gardens, livestock, etc... I have the opportunity to buy more land just next door. If i did that, I would buy an older tractor without worrying about a front end loader, but I would buy it in a higher horsepower than what i have now, say about 50 horse, and just consider it my mowing tractor. If you are just looking for PTO power, you can pick up a 50 horsepower machine around where i live for about 8k. It would probably have about 2 to 3k hours on it.

If he has an orchard with evenly spaced trees at 10' he doesn't want a rotary mower, he needs an orchard flail so he can get up next to the trees and keep the tractor far away. And he should go with a 6' so he has some overlap ... and a tractor sized to run it well

As someone who lives in the midst of 5 acres of woods and the owner of a Kioti ck2620 with a front end loader and a 5 ' brush hog my set-up is the largest I would want to go. Saplings will quickly grow and 10' clearance will become 8' and down. to 6' and when your trying to maneuver a tractor with a loader on the front and a rotary cutter on the back even the 10' initial clearance is close quarters. I might suggest a 48" cutter instead slightly offset or perhaps a flail mower so it doesn't stick back as far as the rotary. As far as the time cutting that much acreage he won't be cutting that ground frequently maybe only cutting the entire space only twice a year to keep the volunteers from growing up. Once the canopy fills in he won't have to cut that often. So he could possibly drop down to the cs series which will give him greater ability to move but will be less comfortable.
@rev.robertmiller5986
@rev.robertmiller5986 6 месяцев назад
I think his best option would be to go with a track skidsteer. The tracks will keep him moving on a soft forest floor, having the attachments out in front will make it easier to maneuver. But if he wants to stay with a tractor I would make sure it had 3rd function with both the standard pioneer fitting as well as the larger skid steer fitting so he could add a tree puller, forestry muncher, a tree cutter or front rotary or flail cutter. This guy is doing forestry management not field management.

The 25 hp tractor that he might need is a Case 300, from about 1958. That tractor was 25-28 hp, weighted correctly and can put that power into the ground. However, to get that same power into the ground on today's tractors, you need a good utility tractor. To get the right weight and power into the ground, you need a lot more HP in the tractor. A 25 hp garden tractor(sub compact utility) will not do it. Also, as you pointed out, the row spacing between the planted trees is a huge issue. If he planted them too close(by hand), he might not be able to get his mower through the space without hitting trees that he wants to keep while trying to be relatively efficient.

One thing that I think was missed (or maybe I missed it?) is the distance between trees in the row. The rows are 10 feet apart, but how close are the trees within each row? Perhaps that spacing dictates a 48" mower?

If i had the money and the space to use it and the (need) i would sure have a more powerful tractor. My 1025r gets things done eventually. I worry about doing damage try to pick up some of the stuff im picking up.

He's probably worried about the emission systems over 25hp. I would recommend a 40 hp tractor and 72inch mower, so there's less chance of missing and it can stick out under the trees in a couple of years. The emissions should be trouble free because its running wide open under load all day.

I think maybe he was more concerned about staying under 25 HP so there wasn't any regen system to deal with.

I can only Guess what His thoughts are based on your Narration. He is Retired. He is Passionate about Maintaining the Trees. He is “Keeping Busy”. Getting close to Retirement Age myself and knowing people who have Retired over the Decades he is Not Overly Concerned or At All Concerned with Efficiency. He doesn’t want to do the work with a sickle, He wants to go out and Work his Land. Getting done Too Soon would be a Negative. Your Examples are from a “Get It Done” and on to the “Next Job” perspective. I don’t believe that is His. Just guessing, maybe ask him again or just listen to what he already said.

Exactly! Most everyone else on here is looking at this from an efficiency standpoint. This guy wants a small capable tractor. Time is on his side.

The real question is a bigger tractor would be much more efficient for a grapple and lift capacity

I personally get very frustrated when people ask for my advice and then do the direct opposite. I'm guessing it's like you said that they were just looking to have what their own thoughts were validated. They're just looking for a "yes man". Very frustrating to me.

Two things a 4 ‘ mower requires 50% more time than a 5’ if it’s 40 hours with a 5’ mower it would take 60 hours with a 4’ or it’s a third less time ( 33-1/3 % less) to mow with a 5’ mower. Second I think he should go for something bigger than 5’. Once you pass the truck of the tree you are going to need to move over so you don’t leave a 6” strip of grass from one tree to the next so now you have no overlap and nobody is that good

I have personally mowed more than one 20 acre field. And when it comes to mowing 20 or more acres I wouldn't have anything less than a 40 horse tractor. The time and wear you will put on a tractor of 25 horses to mow 20 acres Will not compensate for having to buy a new tractor in a couple of years. In short you're going to destroy a 25 horse tractor regularly mowing 40 acres.

I would go so far as to suggest that he get a 72" bush hog so it is easier not to miss any strips.

I recently got a JD 4100 with a 19-20 HP engine. It came with a 60" 3pt mower. I'm not cutting any large fields and no real tall grass (12"+) and it seems to do OK. In the real world is that mower to big for the tractor?

No budget? I'd get a large compact or small utility with a bat wing and do each row in a single pass. If I had smaller spaces to mow as well, then I'd get a smaller tractor and cutter, but I wouldn't go less than a 5ft. Just doesn't make sense. 25hp is 25hp... and fuel use is based on hp demand for the work, so if you can run a 5ft cutter over a 4ft you'll probably save fuel via saved time even though the engine might be working a little harder. I have 23 pto hp on my tractor and run a 5ft cutter fine, but I wouldn't want less power than that, especially if working tall grass or driving up hill while mowing. 25hp tractors don't have 23+ pto hp... (except for maybe a gear drive tractor with transmission driven pto w/overrunning clutch... but I haven't seen any new 25hp tractor with that much pto hp)... so I think this guy is gonna find himself dissatisfied.

I haven’t figured out yet why some people act like they want advice but then just do what they originally want anyway. Is it seeking validation? But they didn’t get validated so I don’t understand that either. Some psychological thing going on there or something.
