It's been answered a few times but I'm going to pin this one. For those who don't get the Pearl Harbour joke - in English if something's described as being "a state" or "in a bit of a state", it means it's a mess.
So, Jingles, in response to Mic's joke here is one that I heard from some of my USN friends. Why is it that not that many Brits join American gangs? Because the last time Brits were in a Hood, the whole thing blew up.
@@timberwolf27 It is a tasteless joke. Keep in mind this was in the 90's Peral Harbor was the worst loss in US history at that point. It would be like making a Chernobyl joke in front a Ukranian.
I was on the USS Boxer (helicopter carrier) in Eilat in 2013. That country as a whole, and Jerusalem in particular is amazing. Eilat was aa lot of fun too. I hope one day to visit there again.
When I was in the Navy there was an old sea story about a couple of RN sailors who ran across a USN sailor at a bar. They started making fun of his dress blues. One of them asked what the two stars on the flap were for. Being slightly annoyed and probably a little drunk, the story goes that he looked them in the eyes, pointed to the first star and stated that the first one was for the first time we kicked their butts and the second was for the second time we kicked their butts. I'm not sure if the bar was still standing but pretty sure shore patrol had an interesting night if this sea story holds any truth to it. lol. Love your stories Jingles. Keep them coming.
When we made port in Cairo, the skiff came along ship and we lowered the bags of garbage down onto the skiffs. I've never seen poverty like that before, Egypt was awesome.
Jingles: It´s the autopilot trying this landing and i have an unjustified landing reputation Saltmineworkers: We all know it´s you but we´ll play along :)
Actually I see that aircraft fly over the runway. Seeking to line up with the centerline. The entire length. So I kind of get what the Ai is doing. I expected a competent AI to then execute a go around to gain control and try find the centerline again in a nice dogbone Maneuver. Instead it terminated it's flight. Why would the AI decide to stall in a steep turn. Why is that something they let their autopilot even DO? Or did Jingles decide to terminate the AI incompetent attempt before it could complete its maneuver. We may never know!
My father graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1960. He served in the Pacific. When his first ship docked in Guam he was assigned to be moral officer. He said this mostly entailed swapping the movies out for new ones. He was given a truck from the motor pool for this purpose. After he and another JR officer loaded up, one of his shipmates asked for a lift. Dad said sure but you owe us a beer. When they arrived at the bar the guy paid up. Then a couple of the ship’s company were leaving and wanted a lift to another place. This was repeated multiple time. Each time Dad and his partner were paid a beer for each passenger. When my dad returned the truck the Master Sargent in charge of the motor pool looked at the odometer and said, “Sir, I don’t know how you did it but you put on more miles then there are paved roads in Guam.”
Can't believe you missed the chance to visit Jerusalem. As a Brit serviceman you get to claim to do something Richard the Lionheart couldn't to do - "I went to a place in Israel where King Dick couldn't" - A Brit Major friend of mine once yelled that out (when drunk of course).
So I'm in the US Army National Guard and have been for the last thee years. And I'm getting a few good stories here and there, but hearing yours makes me think I should have joined the navy. Or active duty for that matter, just for the travel. Thank you so much for your stories Jingles, I can't wait to hear more!
I heard if you want to travel navy, followed by like marines who have the opportunity to be embassy guards wherever are good opportunities to really travel. Army is only good for Europe in my opinion, anything in the pacific or more exotic is usually marines.
Retired USN here. Yes, if you have the ability/opportunity to change branch of service, do so. Take every opportunity to get deployed overseas, or go active duty. I’ve been to Israel 🇮🇱 , Italy 🇮🇹, and Turkey 🇹🇷, just to name a few places, and enjoyed those port visits immensely. In fact, Israel and Italy are on my “bucket list” to see again once I retire from civilian employment.
Hi there, 21 year Guardsman myself.. Similar to the Army Reserves, which is not the Guards, but a federal funded branch without state ties. The Navy also has a reserve branch. You will probably have to reclass, but my advice is at the end of your contract look up a Navy recruiter, and enlist in their reserves. Of course it depends on what the Navy offers as reserves for your state. In my part of my state not only can you do the Army National Guard, you can also join one the Air National Guard (as you can imagine the Air Force branch of the guard) as well as Army and Navy Reserves. The Navy guys are SeaBees if I remember right. Good Luck Soldier! Oh you should be able to transfer straight to Active duty as long as you can get your current company and BN commander to release you. Go talk to a active duty recruiter they can help with the process.
I served back in the 80's and in a german military bar, a squabble started...I used a great faulty towers line after a German marine screamed "you started it!" ..."no we didn't...you invaded Poland..." I was also banned :)
Monday's MWJ is going to be interesting, in good and bad ways. But overall, I have the strange feeling that it's going to mark the end of an era, in more ways than one. When I heard the news of LWM resigning yesterday, I had the premonition that this was the bridge too far, the final straw on the camel's back, for many people when it came to WG. Later on I heard iChase's resignation, and his statement that several other CC's would be doing the same. While it might linger on for a few more years, this has the feeling that from now on, WoWS will be little more than an also-ran, and slowly fade into obscurity - because no one wants to deal with WG. Just saying it now, no matter what your announcement on Monday, we've been here thru thick and thin, we're not going anywhere, and we've got your back. You do what you feel is the right thing, we'll be here for you.
Well, seeing how he jumped off WoT, straight into wows despite the fact that it's still a wg title, and did keep complaining while still playing, i kinda doubt he will drop bugger all. Remember, it's part of his income, and if it's solid and worth it enough, he won't be going anywhere. WG will be around for decades most likely, it's like blizzard and wow, they are too big to fail, at least in fast and spectacular manner. And while jingles is a very entertaining personality, considering youtube algorithms and how they also affect what viewers see at any given time, i personally have to plans to stay subscribed to a channel if it has no real content. Watching someone play flightsim is not exactly entertaining for a viewer, or income generating for the creator.
He will still do vids on warships and tanks cause that’s why people watch him he just doesn’t have to play them. It about time WG understands that people are pissed about the state of the games and that things need to change but I’m sure nothing will. Can’t wait till Monday
@@Bastacat WoWS may be a WG title but in the beginning they were actually pretty decent. So giving WoWS a chance made sense and the slower pace is more suited to him anyway. But in recent years... If you are only here for the WoWS content then too bad although pretty much none of Jingles' WoWS content relies on his CC status. He doesn't do previews of new ships so nothing will change if he quits the CC program unless he's pissed off enough to ban WoWS like he did with Warthunder for some time.
Actually Jingles, the AI copilot in Microsoft Flight Sim is not the autopilot. It's indeed hit and miss, depending on what you ask it to do, but the actual autopilot works a lot better, but it's a real and relatively complex system that you need to operate and not a simple toggle 😀 As usual, great video 😀
Didn’t you already tell the story with Djibouti in a previous MS flight sim video? Not only that, but you made the mistake of saying it’s in Ethiopia twice! Oh Jingles, never change XD
I was so happy to see my city in your video! Maybe after they manage to curb the plague you will want to come for a return visit, then we can go visit the places you missed on your previous visit, as well as visit other places worth seeing here in Israel
@diaa jobran it is my city, well at least as it is for all the residents here, and its real name starts with a letter that does not exist in English...
So iEarlGrey produced an epic rant that absolutely roasted WG in one day.....any bets on how salty Jingles' take on the LittleWhiteMouse situation will be on Monday with three days worth of time to get ready? Get yer popcorn ready, Mingles with Jingles will be good.
I was a peacekeeper on the border between Israel and Egypt. I wandered over the border one day to do some shopping and I was an immediate celebrity. The Israelis take foreign policy very seriously. I’m just an American in uniform trying to buy alcohol. The Israelis wouldn’t let me buy a damn thing. Everything was FREE. The average Israeli citizen was basically bombarding us with ways to show their appreciation
well, I mean you are the sole reason they exist, so it's understandable. Thanks for the protection money you pay us annually to leave them be BTW Love, from Egypt
@@mahmoodali5043 The sole reason they exist is God, and He don't need protection money to keep it that way, so really we're just giving you an annual incentive check because our country is run by globalists.
I served as an radio operator on a ship in the Israeli Navy at the very port you've shown here. (finished my service 2 years ago) If only I'd have been a little older, I would have welcomed you with open arms during your visit here :)
Jingles, I'm a US sailor and believe the grippo(?) thing is still a thing. I'm not 100% sure since I'm stationed in the Pacific (not Japan, sadly), but I'm glad you had a somewhat pleasant experience with us US Navy servicemembers. P.S. Sorry about your buddy, but ue kinda had it coming lmao
To be fair I didn't get the joke. Pearl Harbor doesn't start with PH and it wasn't a state in 1941. It was in a state in 1941. Still don't get what's upsetting about it.
@@jamesdarnell8568 Thank you. I always think of that as "in a state of...". Maybe it makes sense to native speakers to drop the "in". Still doesn't start with PH though?
@@kaltaron1284 This was in the 90s Pearl Harbor was at the time the worst loss of life on American soil joking about it is like joking about Hiroshima.
As for the grippo'd thing, yes, it still happens. My cousin is in the Navy, and his parents get terribly lonely now that the nest is empty, so they open their home to foreigners regularly. They've had sailors, pilots, and staff from all corners of the globe. The two that they really bonded with were a Mexican Marine NCO, who came up here to help after a hurricane, and a pilot, who was either Norwegian or Swedish, who agreed to go to the school my aunt teaches at for "World Culture Day" and sang songs in Norse. - Both of these men have been unofficially adopted, and receive Christmas and birthday cards every year. Being treated so special was, from what I saw, really incredible for them, and I wouldn't be surprised if they wind up visiting again.
Young and foolish... November 1989 and a bunch of MOD Scientists, myself included, were conducting an Instrumented Trial in what was then West Germany. On the 9th we had a break. On offer were trips to either the Inner German Border or Berlin. And the 25 year old MOD Civilian me chose the Inner German Border because it allowed more drinking time in the evening. 9th November 1989. The day the Berlin Wall came down. And my colleagues who had chosen less drinking time got to be there.
As an extra note, as a former Cold War Warrior (MOD Civilian Branch), walking through the Brandenburg Gate and down Unter den Linden a decade later was a seriously disorientating experience.
As a long-time fan of the mighty gnom from Jordan, I really didn't appreciate being called "not friendly" whatever that means. Not everyone in the middle east has bone to pick with Isreal. the vast majority of people just wanna live their lives in peace and don't really care about the conflict.
You are, of course, correct. This is true of most people, it would have been more accurate to refer to their governments rather than the people themselves. Sorry.
1990 Liberty Call in Haifa. Me, young strapping USN officer. Met a SMOKING HOT RED-HEADED MANCUSIAN who was an officer in the IDF NAVY. 6 days of.....FUN FUN FUN. Thank you ZAPORAH, wherever you are nowadays!!
I’m on a deployment in Djibouti right now with the US army and Even though the country is probably more developed then it was back in the 80s it’s still a shithole and I can’t wait to go back home
Many years ago, my family got a "grippo" (can I still call it that if we were civilian tourists?) from an old Bulgarian bartender called, and I'm not making this up, "Pissi", though I'm sure it wasn't spelled like that. We went to his house and his whole extended family was there (must have been 15 adults total), so the atmosphere was very festive. We watched the sun set over the vineyard as we ate amazing traditional food cooked by Pissi's wife. She looked exactly like the kind of woman you'd picture when you think of the word "Babushka" (but not Kate Bush), and she doted on us kids. 10/10 would recommend, absolutely the best evening of our holiday.
When I was a teen in the 90s I had the chance to go aboard the hms Birmingham and a guy my dad befriended named chappy showed us a good amount of hospitality. Its nice to know the USN is just as generous as you brits are
I feel compelled to comment since it the helo carrier you saw might have been one I was on while it was in Haifa. I did two MEU's in the late 90's. Late 1997 on the USS Guam, the oldest active ship in the Navy at the time. The second time was late 1999 on the USS Bataan, the newest helo carrier at the time. The Marines did annual or semi-annual training ops in Israel at the time.
Jingles the autopilot is not designed to land a plane , it is only to bring you to what is called minimums or about 500' when you have no visibility. Autoland will take you all the way down and land you but VERY few private aircraft have Autoland.
I remember going out to Santa Cruz in Tenerife to allow the Advance leave party on HMS Somerset to return home a few days before on of the junior sailors had a Captain's Table and we knew he was heading to Colchester for an extended visit to took him for a run ashore on the way out of the harbour a Northern lad called Geogre said let's got to the Budweiser machine and we where amazed to find a vending machine packed full of ice cold Bud just prior to leaving the harbour...needless to say we put quite a dent in it's stock!
Visited Haifa in 1985 while in the USN. It is a beautiful city! As is Jerusalem!! Both are “must see” locations. Even more so is a tour that takes you down the Jordan River to the the Dead Sea, and the remains of Herod’s palace, Masada. Place these locations on your bucket list! ... Yeah, “jokes” about Pearl Harbour and 9/11 would not be well received.
Couple of years ago, i made a round trip of Jordan and Syria (situation was reasonably normal at that time, i particularly enjoyed Allepo). And yes, the Red Sea was part of the trip. A lot of guys from my group jumped straight in. I just walked along the shore. Where i saw sewage pipes sticking out of the sand and going into the water. Dumping a vicious looking white foam in the water, next to where a lot of guys were having so much fun. Following the pipes inland i saw that they originated from some "restaurants". The next day oner of the swimmers was só sick he couldn't even walk. Such fun.
1 day after posting and only 23k views, pls keep doing these stories m8. Hope people will find them in a while. Also wonder if its better suited for a different audience. But youre historie/anecdotes and experiences are so entertaining! Ive tried finding older ones you did, like the one with the russian fighting off a bear... im guessing those got deleted sadly. Hope you keep doing these great clips!
Nah it wasn't. It is kinda like making a joke about Hiroshima in Japan. This story was in the 90s before 9/11 Peral Harbor was the worst loss of life in US history.
In America we call it Adopt a Sailor, they offer to US Sailors as well. Took advantage of that when we pulled into Plymouth, MA they treated me for the whole weekend. Awesome Time
Jingles, I know this is off topic for this video, but given the shitstorm over WG behavior you have shown remarkable restraint, at least on YT, in regard to your rumored (and now confirmed on Twitter) withdrawal from the CC program. I hope you continue to do some WoWs content focused on outstanding games submitted by the fan base. I only have one thing to say, with all respect. From one naval veteran to another, (bosun's whistle) "Rear Admiral Jingles, departing". Fair winds and following seas.
Djibouti was about the same in the late '80s. I was a hole snipe on a Knox class frigate and we were supposed to go through the canal from the Red Sea back to the Med. Unfortunately, one of our boilers broke down and we were not allowed to transit the canal on just one boiler (Knox class had only 2 boilers + 1 main engine). So we were stuck sitting in Djibouti for about 3 weeks in August waiting for the tech reps to fix the other boiler. No shore power so we had to steam auxiliaries the whole time. It was over 90F in the air conditioned berthing compartments and 130F in the Fireroom and Aux 1 (where the SSTG's were located). 0/10, would not recommend. The most interesting event that I'm aware of happening while we were there was a friend of mine apparently got into some sort of disagreement with a local working girl which escalated to the point that some helpful French Legionaries had to rescue him and bring him back to the ship. He was basically an idiot... ;)
Did you go to any of the beaches in Haifa and see the IDF soldiers in swim trunks and full auto rifles slung over their backs, or within hands reach? All IDF personnel are required to carry their rifles everywhere. I know the USO club you are talking about. I visited Israel in the late 80s and picked up some stuff there. Damn funny joke though.
Liberty call in Djibouti is about 1000% better than liberty call in Mogadishu (have "visited" both ports in the USN, so I speak from personal experience).
Liberty call in Djibouti is about 1000% better than liberty call in Mogadishu (have "visited" both ports in the USN, so I speak from personal experience).
Jingles, if it was an LHA docked in Haifa, those weren't just any Naval personnel those were US Marines and Navy personnel, Do you by chance recall the ship number?
As an American. Well...Your welcome. Not that I served in the Navy, I wanted to. But in the end the American Citizens paid for it so your welcome. Oh and sry about the ruckus we cause everywhere we go.
OMG. I loved this My military stay I had the luck to be invited to an English home. Dinner and drink. Oh the desert, she was very kind ☺️☺️ Young and VERY lucky
The autopilot Jingles landing is actually an easter egg added by Microsoft since they've seen Jingles showing so many episodes of Flight Simulator whilst recounting his days in the RN. BTW, @giuseppe's gaming blah blah explanation notwithstanding, mine is a lot more entertaining whether or not it's true. Everyone knows a Jingles landing when they see one.
Had a lot of good and bad moments ashore. Had an Italian family take me and a couple of liberty buddies into their home. Turns out their first born was in the Italian navy, and they missed him. We were there and they thought, why not. I have only been fed that much one other time, and it was also Italian food. But man, home cooked Italian food my 3 generations of Italian cooks?!? Heavenly. But i have also had some of the worst times in my life ashore, i'm looking at YOU Nice (France). And the absolute worst Italian food i ever ate was in Naples. Wasn't even as good as chef Boyardee. Thin, bright orange sauce and overcooked noodles. If you get shit pasta in Italy, it's a bad restaurant I mean pasta is their thing!
if you think Subways are great, next time you're in the US you've gotta try some Jersey Mike's Subs. It's a chain of sandwich shops largely along the US east coast. WAY better than Subway
Am I the only one that doesn’t get the Pearl harbor joke…? 1. Pearl Harbor doesn’t begin with a PH… it’s it’s initials? 2. what does he mean when he says it’s a “state” in 1941? Does he mean a state of war? Does he mean the sinking of the Arizona or even the Utah? I am totally confused?
@themightyjingles Great Gnomish Overlord, Flambass just had a whale of a time streaming Barbie online today August 14. You need to watch the last hours of his twitch stream!
Thank you sir from an American . It’s nice to hear every once in awhile we aren’t as bad as our liberal media outlets put on . We have very bad politicians and bureaucrats like every nation does . What our media and politicians showcase isn’t us . We are upset at the continued ignorance and blatant lies we get told daily and like all other nations have literally no way to fight back except a voting system that’s corrupt and broken . Kept propped up by people who have agendas and pocketbooks to fill . Again thank you for pointing out how generous we are,can be and have been . Like all media and political pundits ,look at them with what do they gain from saying outright lies ,then you get the crux of the matter . Take care sir and many thanks from a weary old viewer .
Show your evidence. you are protected by English law. I'm almost as old as you and worked Merchant marine for over a decade and if you think something is true show you evidence and stand with the the person but I don't like this trial by majority stuff. The seven year old shit is BS they cant get a credit card and if there parents are not looking after there credit cards not my fault. Opinions are like asshole, every one has got one but it does not mean I would like to meet it.
Hi jingles in all of your gnome abroad videos so far you say how you get to go ashore and enjoy the culture and the food etc... During your time in the navy did you have/carry bank cards or did your ship have a safe of money on board that would be your sort of personal back with which to withdraw from during shore leave? Always wondered how people in the navy pay for things during shore leave in foreign or home ports. Loving this series and find more out your navy days great stuff and look forward to the coming adventures
Speaking of the world of warship news many of you may know but incase you didn't I'm going to add a layer to the wows drama flambass the crazy lad running ships up the middle in twin brothers he has left the cc
Former ranger in the US Army, and the answer is yes, the US military is still as generous and friendly as you recall. The Navy is more so than the Army, but we love to party with our allies, and when the occasion happens, with our supposed enemies too. Sailors are sailors, soldiers are soldiers...its the governments that are total shit.
Grippo? Ghripo? I was raised to show people a good time. Jingles, if you come to Utah, I will show you a good time or grippo you, but that sounds creepy haha
I went to Israel in the late 90s, Haifa, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Masada on the Dead Sea and only ever saw Israeli soldiers with guns. Passed through the Westbank when it was still essentially a separate state and the Palestinian soldiers were in tracksuits and checked our coach at a checkpoint and they were really friendly
I dont get the Pearl harbor joke.....(english is not my native language). It has to do something with the attakc on Pearl Harbor but i still dont get it.
It's a bad joke. Even as a native English speaker, the use of state(in this instance) by the Limey's is not often used in the US. I'm not sure why the squids would have gotten so bent out of shape over that joke?
@@randycollins9698 Well they clearly got the very well delivered joke, cause they got mad about it. So I guess your joke comprehension is worth than a bunch of drunken sailors
Yeah, a lot of people don't realize just how good Subway used to be 25 years ago before all of their products became stale bread and salty processed meat.
If something is "in a state", it means it's wrecked, trashed .. so.. by leading them around to "Pearl Harbour isn't (in) a state", he goes "Well it was in 1941", i.e, when the japanese attacked it and got America involved in WW2
