This is a review and demo of the Okiocam T, a small, inexpensive USB plug-and-play document camera for PC, Mac and Chromebook. I think it will really meet the needs of most educators looking for an easy, low-tech solution for remote teaching.

CORRECTION: There is NOT a microphone in this unit. The Chrome extension supports the ability to record audio, but not through the OKIOCAM itself. The extension allows users to choose the audio source, so they can use internal or external microphones.

I purchased one of these on Amazon for my remote classroom at home, (though mine was the s version) and have been extremely happy with it. It was very inexpensive as far as document cameras go, yet the quality rivals or exceeds that of the much more expensive camera in my classroom. It sets up quickly and is easy to throw in my bag when I've had to find another place to teach from (due to my lousy home internet service). If you're in the market for a document camera for your classroom, or a remote home classroom, and you don't have a ton of money to spend, I really don't think you can go wrong with this one. For the record, I bought my camera with my own money, and didn't receive anything from anyone to leave this comment. It's just a recommendation based on my personal experiences with the camera. I've spent so much of my own money on items for my classroom; it's great when you find products that work well, and are not a waste of our limited money.

WOW Thank you SOOOO much. I basically am stuck with choice of now have my classroom doc cam (not home office friendly) AND if I have a sub they will have zero access to a doc cam. Or nothing from district. I just wanted a no frills doc cam I could use to show documents and write on in real time to my students. All other reviews seem to peddle something more that I really don't need or want. This is real talk.

It depends on your internet connection and how you connect your iPad to the computer.

What you neglected to discuss was just how complicated it is to use the 'zoom' feature (only available through the Google app) while logged into Zoom meeting portal. Too many hoops to jump through to get the app to recognize the camera when attempting to project through screen share. If using the camera on Zoom you CANNOT access the zoom feature only available through the app.

It looks like this camera does not reverse or mirror the image??? Is this true? I have been trying another very popular camera and I cannot get it to stop mirroring if I use in Zoom. Thanks for your help :)

Yes it does - it's a choice you can select if you use the Chrome extension.

If you can't get a camera to reverse in zoom, you can try going into your zoom settings and changing it there for the document camera portion of the lesson. I'm not sure if that will work for you, but it is an option in Zoom.

You can plug it into your computer and project it like any other device in a classroom. If you don't have a computer in your classroom, then I'm afraid not.

I just bought OKIOCAM S USB 2-in-1 Webcam on amazon for $69. It looks like the same thing.

Yes, it looks good too: 3 megapixels instead of 5, max resolution of 1920x1440 instead of 2592x1944 and max shooting area of 9.6" x 12.8" instead of 13.7" x 18.9". Enjoy!!

@@Penguinprof I think that's the one I bought, and I've been very happy with it. The other one was not in stock at Amazon when I needed it, so I decided to give the S model a shot. Amazon is always good about returns for items that don't work well, so there was no downside.

It looks like it would be great to use the Okio Cam T, but it is not cheap, In amazon, they have it for $208.

Aaarrrrgggghhh... it was in stock for $84 on Amazon YESTERDAY. This is so frustrating and I am sorry. I would try to contact the company directly: sales@okiolabs.com. Tell them you saw my review and hopefully they can help. And let Amazon know as well. This price gouging behavior is horrendous. Stay on top of it... this unit is TOTALLY worth $84 - $100, but I wouldn't recommend it for more than that. THANK YOU for letting me know.

@@Penguinprof This happens in the woodworking community all the time. Some famous woodworker with a relatively large following recommends a specific tool and then the prices on that tool go through the roof for 2-3 weeks. Just look at it as a sign of your growing popularity! :P
