A Great Winter For The Deer, Not For The Sportsman | Maine Outdoor Enthusiast Podcast

The mild winter continues. This is great for the deer herd, but not so great for the winter sports enthusiast. Little snow and poor ice conditions are frustrating a lot of those who enjoy the outdoors. In this episode, we discuss northern Maine's ice conditions, how the ice fishing has been and then we delve into Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). Of interest to us, we compare and contrast CWD to some common human diseases which helps characterize exactly what CWD is. Enjoy!

I’ve heard countless conversations about CWD over the years but this is the first time I’ve heard someone explain it in this degree of detail. Very interesting!

😂 The devil is in the details. It's kind of what makes CWD so unique. Glad you found it interesting👍!

Only been on one ice fishing adventure! We went to MN Lake of the Woods, first time we drove out on the ice, as soon as we were totally on ice, my stomach FLIPPED! I looked over at my buddy and his did too! Didn't happen after that! Had FUN, came home with a limit of walleye, in the coldest temp I've ever been in! Great video!

The deer have had an exceptional winter. They look very healthy from the biggest bucks to the smallest fawns. I go through Allagash on a daily basis for work and besides a few bumped deer from logging trucks I’ve yet to see a single coyote killed deer on the rivers all winter and over half the deer that normally come to town are still in the woods.

That is fantastic to hear! (side note- I wish I went through the Allagash on a daily basis 😂) I'm already looking forward to next fall👍. Thanks for watching!

I’m a logger and we have deer on our job site over 15 miles from town. I haven’t seen a winter like this in a long time. This fall is going to be a great one. 👍

It’s definitely an odd year. Down in Mid-Coast Maine on the pond I’m fishing we’ve got a good 14 to 18 inches but a lake 20 minutes down the road is open and the only place you’ll see more then 2 inches of snow is where it’s been plowed up.

We have 8" on my local small pond. that isn't much ice for a small pond, I expect the larger lakes have less than that. Warms days longer days aren't building much ice now. Silly ice sinking theory, but the thermal switch is real. The other fun thing about water is it acts different than other things, when heated is contracts and cold it expands. Doe urine, etc what we use for lures. well I don't but many do. Deer farms are a great way to spread CWD.
@MaineOutdoorEnthusiast

You're correct👍. Yeah, deer farms tend to have the highest transmission rates for sure. Thanks for watching!

I think a lot of these deer diseases are being spread by all these food plot and deer baiting but hunters that bait and wait will say NO because they like the easy way of hunting have you ever read any of John Ford books he was a Maine game warden ?
@MaineOutdoorEnthusiast
@MaineOutdoorEnthusiast 7 месяцев назад
I see your logic, anything that congregates deer could definitely promote the spread. Oh yes, we have some of Johns books. Funny you mentioned him, just today I was talking with someone about a print I have of John Fords. Good stuff! Thanks for sharing 👍

The body is a complex topic. I have found something that is called earthing/grounding. Where our body is not grounded to earth. There is a lot of information on this topic on RU-vid. Maybe you can help me. Why am I always not subscribed to your RU-vid? I have to subscribe every time I get on here. Your RU-vid isn't the only one I have that problem with. Great show.

Great show. Weather affects us all when outside, but most realizes the things that will hit you fast and at extreme temps. Rarely do the think about hypothermia in the 70-80's. Water cools 27 times faster than air and those showers make difference when not dressed correctly. I won't get on the CWD thing because like Paul well lets just say i think too much. Love the outro.

CWD seems more prevalent around game farms which might or might not be due to testing bias. More questions than answers.
