Most people don't even realize that they have a fixed mindset in regards to their mental health. A fixed mindset can keep you stuck feeling depressed or anxious. In this video you’re going to learn how to tell if you have a growth or a fixed mindset, how to develop a growth mindset in regards to mental health. And why having a growth mindset can completely change how you feel about your mental health.
Carol Dweck, the author of Mindset (which this video is based off of) said “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work - brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.”

The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.

I really wish you would (if you haven't already) do a video about elderly depression. Those of us in our elderly years have lives that are winding down due to degeneration of physical abilities, sometimes diminishing mental capabilities, and lower amounts of emotional energy. Some of us suffer from depression, loneliness, multiple illnesses, and sometimes poverty. When we're old and tired, what can we learn that will help us in the last years of our lives as they continue to narrow and wind down?

This is the perfect time for you to try and apply having a growth mindset. Knowing you are in this situation, what can you do to improve on your current state? What are the things you can do to be happier? How can you be productive emotionally and be happy even at an old age? I know it’s not easy but that’s how growth mindset works. Putting in effort to grow and improve even at an old age. I know a 90 year old who fell in love in painting and it makes him happy everyday knowing that he can still improve everyday 😊

Thanks for posting this comment, Helen! I've borne witness to some deterioration in the health of my parents and grandparents recently, and it makes me wonder about how to support them/other elderly around me in their old age, and has really made me aware of the mental health of our elderly. When I'm in the twilight years of my life, I want to know what I can do to help myself manage the associated life changes, be they philosophical, mental, physiological - or any of it/some combination! I want to know how to help my kids be prepared for my own experience, my parents' experience, and their experience as elderly people (assuming I ever have kids). These are things that were briefly mentioned when I was growing up (in the vein of elder discrimination), but never something discussed deeply (mental health and support of our elderly population), and it's still not something that gets discussed. This is such an important issue, and one that many or most of us will face. For the sake of our loved ones, I'm so glad you bring it up. I hope you're doing well - thank you again for your comment and for mentioning this really important topic.

There is an answer to your request. You can do it at home. Have you heard or searched for Neurographica? (Or lesser NeuroArt) There are many Neurographica courses offered RU-vid or online guided drawings. No art skills required to work through the issues you mentioned that have positive results. I highly recommend you give it a try and see what one session can help with

PSA- A growth mindset does NOT say that you're not allowed to deal with emotions. If you feel sad, you don't have to REPLACE it with an 'Oh, what can I learn from this?' mindset. Rather, you have to accept that you're feeling sad, move on, deal with it, and THEN ask yourself if you can learn anything from the situation that happened. And a BIG percentage of times, you can't learn anything from it, you can just move on. *TL;DR- Don't make your growth mindset a coping mechanism, deal with your emotions fully.*
@thatchapthere

Also, "get outside of your comfort zone" is pretty vague and some people interpret it as "don't process or accept your emotions"
@karenp144

Lots of wisdom here. We all process things differently and interpret things differently based on our life experience. Trauma is a huge filter to view the world through, that trauma needs to be dealt with before the world can be seen clearly.

Ironically, this creates both a positive and negative feedback loop. those with a fixed mindset will believe they are incapable of adopting the growth mindset, while those who have a growth mindset will have an easier time embracing the fact that growth with the right mindset is possible. It's taken me so long to break this negative feedback loop.

I've experienced anxiety and depression since I was 13 and I've always blamed and hated myself for it because its felt like there is something wrong with me. Recently I put together that I may have gotten some form of ptsd as a toddler after an incident happened and I was injured. In a study I read with a similar case study, a little boy ended up a little developmentally behind than his peers on the emotional front. I guess it dawned on me how little control we have on how our environment and experiences shaped our brains - now it's our present self who has to live with the effects of all the accumulated stuff...and though it is hard every day i am choosing to stay patient with myself and learn the art of self forgiveness, love and care. It's taken me a long time to even get to where I am today.

Thank you so much for referring to artists and painters as not just having "talent". My husband is a painter who dedicates 12 hours per day at times to draw and perfect his fine art. The problem is, most people become incredibly jealous that they cannot succeed in the same regard because they won't put that same amount of time in. It is so difficult for people to understand how much time and discipline that takes.

I was an art student early on in college, and I had a classmate who used to say this all the time. I doubted him, then, but the more I learn about how people work, the more I know he was right! Anxiety and depression can arise due to being in abusive (rape), dangerous (war) or exploited (poverty) situation. I wish the video acknowledged that it’s not just a growth mindset that is something we had wrong with our posture. The societies we live in are dysfunctional and abusive at so many levels. A person with a growth mindset believe he/she can learn at accomplish almost anything, however, This video ignores the struggles of having a growth mindset. If a person has a growth mindset and a life situation where the person is totally stuck (financially or through responsibilities), it can be very frustrating, the inner potential can feel trapped and life can feel limmited as the person do everything he/she can to progress in life while the actual progress is almost non exsistent.

When I want to get better at something, I pick a certain amount of minutes per day to work on it and I generally work on it around the same time of day (morning or evening) so that it's routine. Even if I don't feel like doing it that day I still do it, as long as its feasible. Four days a week minimum, but six days is preferable, depending on what it is. I keep this routine up for several months at least. Because growth doesn't happen in days or weeks. Problem in general is, when you spend your day at work, your time is limited, because you need to set aside time to relax and sleep as well. With those restraints, you can only pick one or two things to grow in at a time. So you really need to be decisive in the areas you want to grow. You can't do everything, and in fact, as one person you can only do very little. So you need to be decisive in what you want to do, realizing this limitation.

Yes, we are gifted with skills such as art, but we have to put in the work of becoming the best stewards we can be of that gift of talent. Otherwise a treasure we are given becomes trashed. Your videos are so helpful. And i just want to give you a HUGE thanks, i know you've done a lot of work and research about how the human brain works and everything that goes into it. It means a lot to people like me who need a bit of insight when we are lost on our journey. ❤

Emma I don't know if you would read this or not. But you have literally given me back my life. I have dreams and ambitions that i want to chase now. When i was depressed i had no will to live or do anything. And guess what i have unintentionally gained weight because i started eating more when i resolved some of my anxiety. I was underweight and now i eat well and am gaining weight. I didn't even notice it until i stood on a weight machine. Thank you so much for everything that you do 💜

@@stillnotstill I hope I didn't offend you. Sorry about my comment. Emma has helped me so much. I've spoken to many others and find her the most caring, calming of people. I meant the 'gorgeous ' as an all round thing. I will unsubscribe .

I'm challenged by how relationships are complicated by the mindsets of each of the people and their mindsets about the relationship itself. For example, I have the mindset that I am flexible and can change but my partner cannot. So then I take on the mindset that our relationship is doomed. I start to look for things that my partner does that prove he's an xzqx!?% which reinforces that the relationship is doomed. Being able to talk about the assumptions we have about one another, our relationship, and how we are seeing things takes time and practice, AND, like Emma said, you can learn to do this.

That is such an important topic! 💚 My motto is: Everyone can learn everything. Only time and motivation differs. In my childhood my parents alsways said, that I just don't have a talent for maths but I'm good at other things such as language. And this planted a fear of maths exams in my brain. So I failed and failed and faiied. And then stoped caring about my maths classes so I can push away my fear. I had to do 7th grade again because of my bad grades. But then I got good grades, I already knew the binomial formula and I began to have kind of fun. I made extra exercises and my teacher also supported me and gave me some books. But it was years later I understood that there is no such thing as talent. It all depends on motivation, fun, efford and time. Well, I wouldn't say, that my parents harmed me but it is sad that they just wanted to calm me and make me feel better and caused the exact opposit

Do you ever consider doing a mental health anonymous. Like a group therapy via zoom. Something where everyone can pay an amount for a session(basically based on a few hours) and then a link is sent to them for a zoom chat. In these times where fear is all over the place and our minds need to recuperate I think this would be very helpful. It’s like a therapy session for those who can’t afford the actual monthly costs of a therapist. Yet knowing others are out there just like them trying to regain their mental health.

I think a growth mindset is why sometimes people who struggle with something (like talking to people) can be motivated to do something like a challenge where you talk to as many people as you can. It's a challenge, so it's supposed to be difficult at first; it allows you to be okay with that initial difficulty and gives you an automatic frame to work through things. Without that frame of it being a "challenge," people expect that they should already be able to do "normal" things like talk to people so any difficulty means they failed.

I have a partial growth mindset; im not emotionally fixated or in a deep depression, but I can’t seem to find the motivation to do things. Even when I have the option to play a game or practice art or music, I can’t seem to find the “want” that will push me to the next level. Im so focused on the struggle of maintaining a livable lifestyle that I stopped planning ahead and live for my next paycheck. This is because life is proven to be unpredictable and in our current capitalist system aid will rarely find its way to me. I can’t live past tomorrow
