Have you heard of a dragon whose tail releases a spray of explosive slime? Or a dragon that hunts with noxious fumes? Or one that vomits spires of super-heated glass? Across various myths and cultures, dragons have taken on many forms. But few are more fearsome than the terrors that lurk within the pages of the Dragonslayer Codex - a worldbuilding project from the brilliant imagination of artist Sawyer Lee.
The volume is written as a survival guide to the world’s most dangerous dragons, explaining their abilities, behavior, and how to slay them if necessary. But be warned: many of these scaly tyrants will not go down without a fight. So, for this entry into the archive, we’ll learn critical things about each species that can mean the difference between survival and searing flames.
Now, let’s dive into the burned pages, and discover the secrets of the Dragonslayer Codex…

@@alorianimz87 I think these designs are actually pretty reasonable by dragon standards. For one, I get the impression many of these dragons- particularly the heavier species- are primarily terrestrial. Like the hullbreaker is described as "gliding" rather than truly flying. The ones that do seem to rely heavily on flying are comparatively slim even by classic dragon standards. The exception to this is the Great Kinsbane, but most of their bulk seems to be in the chest and wings, which is where it will do the most good keeping them in the air. Something the size of a dragon would need extraordinary flight muscles anyway.

@ericward8459
@ericward8459 Год назад
Maybe they have them, but the dragons hides are too tough or thick for standard projectile weapons short of siege engines
@jeremybarrett3616
@jeremybarrett3616 Год назад
They do have them. They have records of a Great Kinsbane face tanking a cannonball. Judging by what is shown I'd say humans are presently in a period analogous to the Late Medieval to Early Renaissance. Dragons are clearly common enough that human cities are mentioned as being built underground. (In the Scarlet Lasher segment) And the dragons appear to be intelligent enough to learn from observation. Inferring they have a sense of object permanence. The main issue with fighting dragons would be that they have many advantages. 1. Flight. 2. Size,speed and strength. 3. Deadly breath weapons ranging from flash melts steel to rot shotgun or electric shock. 4. Thick scales and hide,with some cases being exceptionally so such as the Great Kinsbane and Hullbreaker. 5. Their intelligence. Dragons do get killed despite this,but the teams of slayers still tend to take heavy casualties. Any fight with a dragon is likely to end with death or maiming. While a dragon fighting humans can learn if it survives and is less likely to suffer significant injury. Most dragons will attack from above and besides a shield you don't have a whole lot of options. Attacking from range with a crossbow would be ideal,but you'll be shooting upwards and have to account for its speed,the range, the elevation and the power of the bow. Most shots won't connect at all or will have minimal effect past a certain range. Reloading a weapon good enough for the job will take too long. Around 30 seconds using a goats foot to winch a good war crossbow. Then you need to remove the goats foot,replace the bolt and ready the weapon again to aim. Ammo is also a limited resource. If you're in a fortified position you can hide and reload. But it can also leave or breathe fire into your hiding place. It won't just stick around to be plinked at. And some such as the Hullbreaker will likely come through the walls or roof to get you. Poison could work but you need a delivery method and they are both large and seemingly quite hardy creatures. If you're especially unlucky it may even figure it ate something bad and vomit it up. Or it could smell/taste the poison and just not eat it. Most methods to kill dragons would require a team of trained individuals armed and armoured,aware of the type of dragon,with a terrain advantage and a tactical advantage. Polearms,spears,crossbows,axes and warhammers would be wise. Shields would be very useful in most cases to at least take the brunt of the breath. With armour swinging between covering as much surface area as possible;to staying light and ideally wearing treated wool that's somewhat resistant to flames at minimum.

I love how alien the dragons look when compared to a lot of designs. Also, scientifically, how could you get a six-limbed dragon without bipassing tetrapod evolution entirely? I had an idea that they could develop wings via heat regulating sails that eventually become fully-functioning wings, but I'm not so sure.
@melkerahtagadatsoin-tsoin6016
I think I saw somewhere that a mutation would theoretically be possible to go from four limbs to six, but as far as I understand it would be highly unlikely. Unfortunately I can't remember where I found this information so it might not be accurate
@WeAreInYourWall
@WeAreInYourWall Год назад
It's not that unlikely or unusual there are many animal lineages with more than four limbs, it was only by chance our aqautic ancestors had less fins than average otherwise our lineage would have been six limbed , as it stands fish who stayed in the water are generally six or more limbed , the genes exist and there is a mutation other than absorbing a twin, that can cause multiple sets of limbs although usually non functional , there have been several recorded instances most recently I believe a duck between 2006-2016 had four fully functional legs and a set of wings, although it lost a leg in an accident whilst young.
@WeAreInYourWall
@WeAreInYourWall Год назад
@@melkerahtagadatsoin-tsoin6016 TLDR: there are several lineages on earth with six limbs, and multiple mutations which can cause functional duplicate limbs, genetic bottlenecks and mismatches could propogate them theoretically. (There was recently a fuck with four legs and wings)

1:26 As elegant as they are lethal, the Scarlet Lashers weave through the sky like malignant dancers. Legend says their tail can slice a bison in two, & many Slayers bear marks, amputated limbs, and deafness from fighting these wyrms- for the lashers can emit a sound so loud that it stuns victims and leaves their ears bleeding. Perhaps the most dreadful feature however is their intelligence. Lashers will build traps, pitfalls, and other entanglements to capture and toy with Slayers. Usually this ends with the victim being impaled on a branch of their corpse tree, used to impress mates. I would have to imagine this dragon as a dangerous bloodthirsty feared villain/predator in the Jungle and the Great Grass and given him an individual name "Khan" after the Tiger from Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. Like the tiger, the Scarlet Lasher Khan has two sworn enemies in my imaginative take on Kipling's story "Ruby Gillman" the Kraken protagonist raised by the various troll clans in the Jungle, and "Grimmel the Grisly" the overarching Genocidal Poacher from the Village.(plus he too is also an enemy of Ruby while during her time in the village)

I love world building projects like this. The dragon designs are awesome and I love how they share common features, suggesting there are evolutionary trees and such which is a cool detail. Plus the world building is done perfectly. It gives off how to train your dragon vibes (which is already a pretty good movie) but kinda takes it to a new and interesting level. Thanks for sharing this CA, your work does not go unnoticed!

This is basically How to Train Your Dragon if the Vikings were knights, and they never learned how to get along with these dragons, mostly because these ones are much more dangerous and meaner.

Veilwright move set for a game (that doesn’t exist): M1: Claw Combo: a three hit combo that does decent damage First ability: Smoke Screen: once used the Vielwright will produce a cloud of smoke that makes it impossible for anyone to see them, while using their superior senses to catch them off guard (lasts 15 seconds, you get beast-o-vision if you know what I mean) Ability two: Scavenge: the Veilwright scavenges for a myriad of poisonous plants, depending on what they find their First and third abilities will have a different special effect (Lone-wart: Disables one move randomly once they enter the fog Dead-leaf: once they enter the fog they will stunned for 2 seconds completely BUT the fog has a higher start up Throat oat: The fog now does very small continuous damage after entering and disable in game chat. Third ability: Smoke Dash: the Veilwright cloaks itself is smoke and dashes forward leaving a trail of smoke behind. (Retains affects of poison)

The creature design and world building is so amazing. I really like how horrifying the dragons seemed, imagine one breaking into your home. Also the fact that the dragons don’t take all of the spotlight is very nice. Having realistic adaptations In normal animals makes a lot of sense when they worry about being hunted by huge flying lizards

I've always really enjoyed the idea of mythical creatures redesigned as realistic animals that retain their fantastical abilities through weird biology. It's always really cool to see what solutions different people come up to stuff like how dragons would breathe fire or acid in real life.

Watching your videos has helped me come up with reasons for why the creatures that I've made have what they have and how they survive in their world. I think it'd be cool if you could do a video on the biology of the Monsterverse titans, especially the ones we've seen in the Hallow Earth so far.

Cool. Reminds me of this book I once had that was written like Darwin's naturalist notebook, with sketches from an adventuring naturalist describing all the life and dragons he encountered on his journeys. This was years ago, though, can't remember the name but it was probably published back in the early 2000's... Good video. I love putting this channel on and falling asleep.
