I'm not even kidding, I was listening to your advice in my car and stopped for gas, and while my car was filling up, I got out my sketchbook and began trying the silhouette technique you mentioned. I will remember this...
This has probably been the most informative character design video I've found on RU-vid so far. I've watched lots of them, and most of them are just, "Circles are for good characters. Triangles are for evil characters. Squares are for everything else. Now mix those together and go make stuff." This one actually had a lot of stuff that I never heard of before for character design which really helped, thanks
While I do think the whole shape language thing is helpful. Like making a strong character broad and square. And having a shy or sweet character be round and squishy. It gets repetitive after a while. Like I want them to tell me something I already don’t know. Their not helping by repeating the same advice over and over. (I’m not talking about this video by the way.)
This was honestly the most helpful video on character design I’ve ever seen. Normally people just say “ Pick good colors” and “Make your silhouette different” but you actually told us how. Many thanks to you
Same this is my first vid and her voice is so much fun, silly, and joyful🔥 also I do wanna hear her on something like an episode of adventure time would be perfect💯
Good thing I'm a writer, hehe but I have to make my character good and entertaining to read with a unique personality that is important and consistent and uhhhhh
I feel you, I'm an artist and a writer, I prefer art because it's easier to make a character, but you also can't really tell a story with art (I mean I guess you can but i'm not good at it.)
This was really helpful! I really want to start developing a comic, but I'm having a really hard time with creating unique characters for my stories. Thank you!! Also, I was the 420th like. ;)
In the colours palette thing when you make a comic taking place in Alternia where blood Colour is a big role in their society and you can only wear your blood Colour, white, black, and/or Candy red. So it's hard to convey things like what you mentioned when given a limitation but it really pushes me to make character designs with these colours!
You have no idea how much I love this!! Almost every character design video I've watched has always been the very straightforward "Go simple, flashy = bad" And this was actually very helpful!! I love the attitude and how you actually gave websites and insight + the first "Flashy = good" I've ever seen! Thank you so much for this, it was really intuitive and helpful :)
Ok I've been wondering about this is many artist's works, but when you make the lines jiggle like that, did you actually trace over the same frame and you are looping those 2 frames? Or is there some sort of distort tool in flash that can alter the outline ever so slightly, so i don't have to hand trace the whole thing again?
It's something called boiling, I think. I learned how to do it from Oney when he was making all those flash tutorials. You just take the image and smooth them once, make a new frame and smooth again, making 3 looping frames..so like..original>smooth>smoother loop. I hope that makes sense LOL
Who is your character? What does your character wants most in his/her life? How will you obstruct your character from getting it? These things can make story better. Loved your video please make more videos about character creation. I am currently doing my bachelor in Multimedia and in my second semester I have to come up with my own character with distinctive features from its heights to age to its origin along with a storyboard.
Ok I’ve never watched any of your videos before, but I officially love you. Seriously I SUCK at making characters in every way possible and all tutorials and guides don’t help me. Thank you so much!!
I am always lurking through the illustration tutorials on youtube to learn more, and I havent laughed this hard in quite some time. Thanks! Keep up the hard work!!
I've been in such a funk for MONTHS with my art style and characters and honestly? No exaggeration this video and BaM's made me excited about art and character design again, I'm going on a design revamp spree! I love the way you explain & describe things, and the way you draw your sona is super precious and fun. Lots of giggles had. Subscribing :^)
had a bad day but your video made me feel better. your voice is really sweet, i love your personality, and your art style coloring and animation is cheerful and interesting! thank you, i'm gonna go through your videos now
YES! Joopis! Brilliant, funny and on point. I hope you get an awesome job in character design for some gaming company or something soon. You have amazing talent. :) ^^
omg I l o v e you. I've been watching tutorials for 2 days and yours is the first one I didn't have to skip through, for fear of stabbing myself just to end the pain of terrible/obnoxious presentation and serious "does not do what it says on the box" syndrome. Off to watch the rest!
I don't remember when I subscribed to you, I also don't remember watching any of your videos but you were in my sub feed. So I went through your catalogue of videos, you put up a lot of great content! keep up the good work.
5:19 I love how you included the Seekers from Transformers as they were, essentially, re-colors of each other. There's also a joke in the series: Seeker 1 "Oh yeah? Well at least I'm not as ugly as you!" Seeker 2 "Ugly? We look the same!" While the other two were similar (one purple and grey, the other teal and grey) Starscream, the leader of the seekers, stood out in that he had bright red, black and blue over the silver/grey. He stood out while looking similar enough to the others. Don't get me started on Rumble/Frenzy, the entire fandom has been confused since the beginning.
I love making characters one of em have blue skin and a longass finger growing out of his head lmao,,, I love giving weird limbs and colourshdhwj and i LOVE looking at fashion :00
Hey Joop! Thanks for the help with this. I am drawing my own short comic right now, and it will mostly be in black and white, so knowing how important silhouette is will be really helpful. Keep doing what yah do :)
I just stumbled upon your channel, and i just loved this video! You actually did teach us something and i love your humor and style especially. Its so charming and entertaining, it aint boring! Other videos that have a similar subject about character design (by other people) i ussualy can click away but your just fun!
Immensely helpful. I wish the audio didn’t jump up and down in amplitude so frequently, but you have some very good advice on offer nonetheless! Keep it up Joopis!!!
Thanks for the advice! I'm on my way to creating the "perfect" backstory and design for my main character! this advice really helps because I need to get better at picking color palettes for my Oc's.
I think the best example of colors showing how characters are different is the wind tribe from zelda: minish cap. Link himself is a good example, as the very interesting choice of green shows things such as how hes different, or how he fits in but somthings off. The wind tribe, however, wears blue and red, different from normal hyrulean coloring
0:56 Pokemon does a similar thing, where the pokemon's image is split up into four squares, rotated so it doesn't make sense, and you have to guess the pokemon before it rotates back around and reveals it.
