A Guide to Soaking and Sprouting with Registered Dietitian.

The purpose of soaking and sprouting is to decrease the amount of phytic acid found in beans, legumes, nuts, seeds, and grains. Plants produce phytic acid as a defense mechanism but when we consume large amounts of this plant compound it can interfere with important micronutrient absorption. Remember, we are what we absorb, not what we eat!

It’s been already 3 days they are soaking and I’m about to throw them out. I wonder if you have any tips for that. Also, do you keep your nuts and seeds in the fridge at all times? I've tried adding a little vinegar when I rinse them, which might prevent mold and it didn't kill my sprouts. You could also try refrigerating them. I'd suggest giving them at least a few hours at a warmer temperature to kickstart the seeds then putting them in the fridge while they grow. I was curious whether there is a list of seeds somewhere which indicates which seeds must be cooked or not and whether you need to "shell" them or not after sprouting ? I ask because I got pretty confused when I saw some videos of people using sprouted millet when previously I had found information indicating that millet must be hulled before consumption as the hull is not edible and as far as I understand you can't sprout a seed unless it is whole i.e. sprouted millet is with hull.
@AmandaLi
@AmandaLi 3 года назад
I'm not aware of any lists like that, but you are correct in that any grain/seed that has been hulled won't be able to be sprouted!
@dianebassett1930
@dianebassett1930 2 года назад
@@AmandaLi even if a seed has been hulled, meaning it cannot be sprouted (like, say, a hulled sunflower seed), does it benefit at all from the rinse/soak cycle? So if I buy hulled sunflower seeds, would I want to rinse/soak and then dehydrate? I think so but would appreciate your confirmation.
@blackmber
@blackmber 2 года назад
If you have some seeds already, I would suggest soaking a small amount to see if they will sprout. Some seeds (like split lentils) will begin to sprout even with the hulls removed, and sometimes gardeners will intentionally remove shells or hulls of seeds to make them sprout faster. You may also find that the hull softens or falls off after sprouting, and you will be able to rinse them off or eat them. Only if the seeds are roasted/toasted, crushed or ground they will definitely not sprout.
