The movie "Fire and Ice," (1983), by the late, great artist Frank Frazetta, also used rotoscoping. I guess the difference with "Take On Me," is that it transitions from animation to reality continually through the video.

You shouldn't. They like what they like. Just as you like what you like. I know because I come from a generation very likely before even yours. And 20 years from now, everyone will say that everything from 2020 was the best music and everything today was crap. And guess what? 20 years after that, those people from the future will be doing exactly the same thing. Like you, Alex, I was born in '93. I didn't get to experience the 80's in their full glory, HOWEVER, my mom recorded videos on MTV, we grew up watching videos on TV (back when they still showed music videos on TV), and always listened to this stuff. This is a classic one hit wonder. A few bands have covered this ditty (Weezer most recently) but no one holds a candle to A-ha. These guys absolutely kill this track. I love watching you do these classic reax, and hope this trend continues. The 70's/80's had some killer tunes and even better videos.

@ahkkariq7406
@ahkkariq7406 2 года назад
It is a whole package. Without the huge hit potential the record company would never have put all the effort (money) into making the video. I guess it is hard for younger generations to understand how strange this new sound was back then. That's what A-ha themselves ment about the claim that the song needed time to grow on you. It still is that way with A-ha's music - many of their songs needs you to listen more than once. Like this first song which needed to grow on the whole world - today their songs have to grow on each and one of us and eventually ends up becoming the music we love the most.

Found this comment on another reaction: Vader's Rage I was a production assistant on this video (the animation side of things). The animation effect was called Rotoscope which was invented/developed by Colossal Pictures/USFX in San Francisco. We did a ton of stuff for MTV as well as FX for movies like “The Right Stuff”, “Top Gun” and “The Running Man”. Also back then we did a multi-episode show called “Aeon Flux” done in an animae art style for MTV’s Liquid Television. All of MTV’s original “bumpers” (when they first went on the air) were done by us. Seeing your reaction had me grinning from ear to ear. Excellent vid!

Alex, I just found your station and I am impressed, love your comments and insight. I'm a 60's, 70's and 80's type of guy but if newer music sounds good, I'll listen. This video was so creative for being done in 1985. Read where it took 6 months to produce this video. It made it to number 1 in the United States in 1985 and stayed on the charts for 27 weeks. Keep the hits coming.

My favourite song! It took 2 artists 6 months to draw the pencil sketches over each frame of the video, printed out / cut out with a knife to allow the live action to come through the magic frame. In Ready Player One, there is a Take on Me tribute moment when the two main characters try to escape the bad guys (with a wrench) and they go to a hole in the wall but one of them sacrifices themselves for the other.

One of the great one hit wonders of the 80's! My wife and I sat around with our kids and their spouses (all in their 30s now) a couple of weeks ago and spent a couple of hours just watching one hit wonders on RU-vid. Most were from the 80's.
