A trick that works well too is to use the second larger bit in reverse. You won’t get the tear out.

A good idea, but I think that you will get a neater result if you drill the counter-bore first, then drill the clearance or pilot hole for your screw.

Useful

Use the lareger brad point bit before drilling the pilot hole, or use a twist bit afterwards. That way you always have a centre.
