First of all Thank you to Naults Powersports in Manchester NH.
I got to spend a half hour trying out a new 2018 Goldwing Tour DCT. I normally ride a 2014 FLHTK.
The Good: This bike was like riding an Acura. The suspenion, Engine, and transmission kept eliciting the word smooth. It soaked up the all but the largest of craters and slid through the gears like a late model luxury car.
The Bad: Storage, this isn't your father's Goldwing. I think this has enough storage for 1 person to spend a few days on the road. I think if you spend a lot of time 2 up for extended periods you may need to search out more laundrymats than you're used to.
Overall: As a motorcycle, this thing is an A+, as a touring motorcyle, an A-. (But an A average will still get you into the ivy leauge)
A few people have stated that I am moving my head too much. Sorry, but I was in an unfamiliar area, on an unfamiliar bike. so I was trying to learn the bike while navigating an area I had never ridden in, all the while trying to tell you what I thought of it. So there's more than the average amount of head bobbing and looking around. If this makes you seasick, there are plenty of other videos out there about this bike.
Thank you for watching.

We had an ‘08 M109R and my wife was cool with it. We stopped at a Honda dealer for some strange reason and she climbed up on the throne of a Goldwing. An hour later we were driving the Goldwing home. I just bought a brand new leftover 2018 last Saturday. I could not make myself go with the automatic. It was only $1,000 more, but I just couldn’t do it. Regarding storage, Corbin makes perfect match side and trunk covers.

How to sell a Harley - big ad campaigns, loads of playing on the heritage and made in America. How to sell a Honda - "here's the key - bring it back when you're ready to buy it".

Exactly... You can take away the braindead symptoms of simple people who have this die hard emotional attachment to a name brand Hardley bike. In comparison, just get on a Honda. It speaks volumes. You will never understand if you never ride it. VFR is a great bike. Honda has always left me impressed. ALWAYS smart and sensible and great and conservative and EXCELLENT. Honda blows away most all. Ducati is also awesome when I rode it. I would have both.

Anyone who can afford a new wing can afford a new Harley so you're making as much sense as the usual fanboys. I suppose next you will be telling us the rust on the bikes at the EICMA show adds character or that the now famous death wobble is something riders really want? Please go ahead and waste your money on a bike with inferior design and shoddy build - most of us have done it at least once. I love Harleys but only upto around the late 70's. Most stuff after that isn't much of an improvement and honestly it's largely cynical marketing rubbish to sucker in the mid life crisis brigade. Look at what the Harley name used to mean (some of the best bikes in the world) then look at what it's beceme (a marketing mans wet dream). It's disgusting they are taking such a name and defiling it by making overpriced, sub standard rubbish. Some are still nice but the majority fall short and dissapoint. This is why there are so few of the newer generation buying them. It's a shame but after the dyed in the wool fanboys like you have died out Harley will be struggling if they haven't got something special in the wings by then. It's even more frustrating because they have a massive brand andthe ability to throw more R&D at it than most but thanks to people kissing their butts they will keep churning outdated tat out until they get the same wake up call as the big three car makers in the US did a few years back. Better to be honest now than kiss their backside until they collapse.

I've been driving bikes for almost 65 years and didn't EVER have a reliable one until I bought a 1966 Honda Dream, which never gave me any trouble and ran like a modern car. That sold it for me, and have had Yamahas and Hondas ever since. Although the 2018/19 Wing is a superb bike, I haven't yet worn out my "old" one (2003 GL1800 with 123,000 kms). And since my riding days are coming to an end through old age, I won't consider myself truly OLD until I can no longer handle the Wing safely. Thank you Honda for building a full line of bikes from the 50cc up that are some of the best in the industry

Riding since 1969 (Hondas, Kawazakis, MotoGuzzi), coming back from a 6-month cruise (all expenses paid, compliment of the US Navy) in 1996, I bought my first (and only) brand-new bike - a Harley Electra Glide Classic - loaded. I had it 9 months including 2 months of warranty-covered repair/convalescence (for the bike) time. Sadly and/or strangely enough, except for some electronic niceties, it rode worse than my 1982 Honda GoldWing (which I still have), the finish was not as fitting for such a pricey motorcycle; it had poor attention to details and a lot of the parts/pieces looked like "add-on" (i.e. did not seem to have been designed with/for the bike in the first place). It sat lower which I liked (I was 5' 9" then), vibrations on long cruises got old after a while (I was getting older, I understand), acceleration, cornering/maneuverability/braking was worse than my old GoldWing. My biggest gripe was having to "stay in touch" with my HD dealership (don't get me wrong - they were nice to me, Oceana/VA Beach, VA has a huge Navy presence!) but I did not expect a new motorcycle ordered while at sea to suffer several electrical failures (radios, gauges, front brake AND engine leaks!). I sold it and bought a used 1991 Anniversary Edition GoldWing (which I still have after 88, 000+ miles). Tastes are personal, and I respect my fellow bikers' choices. HD's are "different", I like tradition and "classic" vehicles like the best of some of us (still have my first Mustang, a 1970 convertible) but ... (engineer talking here), HD is "slightly" behind the times. Incidentally, my HD had cost me more than all my current used Honda classic bike collection (10 motorcycles)! You guys ride safe, Ciao, L

I've ridden Harleys since 2006. I owned a 2012 Goldwing. It was a nice bike, but I didn't have the leg room I was used too, my wife got more wind head buffering from the Goldwing passenger position, and for as big as the bike was it had less storage for luggage. It was an overall a good bike. We rode it for two years and went back to a harley. Its a preference. No need to be a harley hater.

I own a 28 yr old GL1500. All my friends own Harleys and Triumphs , and ya, i get alot of flak now and then. However, when the 2018 harley is in the shop getting ANOTHER charging system replaced....and my other friends 2017 Harley is getting electrical probs AND a wobble from the rear in corners.......not to mention dumping 4k every time you drive past a dealer ship.....i just smile...start my bike, and ride ride ride. I'll always love a Harley. But i dont think i would trade in my sewing machine for a new one. (shout out to MSFB there )

The first Wing I ever rode was around that era. That's a shame about your buddy's bikes. I think that's more the exception than the rule. Pretty much everybody I ride with has a Harley, I don't know anyone that has had regular problems with the newer bikes, and the older ones have normal high milage issues. If you get a chance, throw a leg over a 2018 Wing. They're expensive, but I think you'll find a way to trade in the 28 yr old one for a new one. They ride better than anything I've tried in the last couple of years. Thanks for watching and ride safe.

I calculated out the range based on the "miles to empty" feature. It may be down slightly, but is in the same ballpark as it's competition. I want to believe that the frontend technology from that bike trickled down (or up) to this style Goldwing. I've had my own shop for some time now. I kinda miss getting to ride all the new machines that come out in the new model year. I'm a Honda fan for life because of it.

I took a test ride on the same bike and I was instantly hooked. So much so that I worked to find a dealer that would take my 2018 BMW K1600GTL in on trade. I eventually found one that was willing and I LOVE the new Gold Wing. It's far and away the best bike I've ever ridden and I've owned a couple dozen different bikes and ridden even more. I got the 7 Speed DCT auto trans because I have arthritis that prevents me from riding very far on a bike with a conventional clutch. The Wing is definitely much more of a sport touring bike than earlier Gold Wings. It eats up miles with no effort and in Sport mode it's incredibly quick. I can't imagine ever buying another bike. I can't ride sport bikes but this thing is as quick as I'll ever need it to be. Try one if you're looking for a touring or sport touring bike. You won't be disappointed.

@ridingnewengland3192
@ridingnewengland3192 6 лет назад
I think you're right. I've done some 900-1100 mile days. I was never that far from a gas station, that a 30 mile difference in range would have been an issue, and at 200 miles I'm ready for a water and a short walk. On those rides, on ECONO mode, I think this bike would do just fine. My only concern with this bike would be the luggage. I would need to travel lighter on long trips. Those 900 mile trips are usually only once a year, so the luggage capicity and range would be of no concern for the other 51 weeks where I'm using my bike to get a burger and ice cream and only use the luggage to store my jacket when it gets hot.
@xxWtChocolatexx

Yeah it's going to be tight whenever I get some real miles under this thing. My wife is not the biggest fan of motorcycles but I think she likes this one which just adds another person to a road trip and more clothes. So we will see how that works out in the future. Being in South Dakota I would like to make it out to either side of the country never being either way on a bike. I will say a Harley does sound better. Not sure if goldwing is a bike you change the exhaust on either since it's so much a part of the look of the bike. Parents have a Harley trike and my step dad has a 98 or 99 Heritage Springer, which I would like to buy from him someday.

Touch screens do not need to be on a motorcycle. That's about one of the worse ideas I ever heard of. It's bad enough they put them on cars, but they are not safe on a bike. Too many distractions on vehicles these days and people can't keep their minds on DRIVING like it should be. I see it everyday and it's getting dangerous to drive with all the distracted drivers out there.
@ridingnewengland3192
@ridingnewengland3192 6 лет назад
I like to be able to watch a movie, take a phone call, and do my taxes while I ride. I agree with the distractions issue, but I don't think the input method matters. There are times a touch screen is much quicker than going through a menu. Thanks for watching and the comment.

In this day and age where the cars, trucks, vehicles have so many safety devises built into them, It's just a way that they "Babysit" the driver, so no actual safety skills are learned and as a result, we have more dangerous drivers on our roads now. The smart phone is another one of the culprits that are ruining our roads also and should be band from being used while driving in my opinion. People just have too many distractions in vehicles today to keep them from being better drivers, FACT!

Are you aware, that the first time you put it in Sport mode, then cranked the throttle, the bike was still in Tour mode. If the "Sport" mode display is still blinking, its telling you that you have to let off the gas, then back on to change Modes. Once you do that, the blinking mode stops and the new mode is displayed solid (no blinking). So, when you discibed it as having more power.....it didn't. The second time you cranked it (when you exited the Hwy), that was the first time you experienced Sport mode and Yes,, it is a huge change over Tour mode.

Smoother than your Harley? Lol. A dump truck driving down the side of a glacier is smoother than a Harley. Not hating, fans, just saying. I learned to ride on my Father's 1972 Honda CB350. Very common bike. My first was a 1984 Honda Magna. Then I owned a 1998 Suzuki Intruder 1400 so I know what a big V-twin feels like over a Honda and even my Father's CB350 was very smooth. He used to show me things like putting a cigarette on the tank on end and revving the engine, and it wouldn't fall. My Intruder? At idle I couldn't make anything out on the mirrors they shook so bad. It's all in what you're looking for I guess. A goldwing? Dear God I'd love to own one, they're just too expensive for me.
@ridingnewengland3192
@ridingnewengland3192 6 лет назад
The newer Harleys are considered too smooth for the Harley faithful. I've ridden most of them, they are as smooth as almost anything on the market. The Wing brings it to an entirely new level. It feels electric. (damn, you're making me over use the word smooth again.)
@wingmanalive

Lol. Good stuff. Honda made a breakthrough in their V-4 engine design in the 80's. It was used in the Magna and Interceptor models for years. I LOVE that engine. Like I said I learned to ride in the mid 80's and at that time Harley's were HEAVY and LOUD. Also expensive and not that reliable. Seems they were always on the side of the road. Again not hating, it's just my opinion. I'd love to own one, sitting in my den next to my fireplace, but of all the bikes I've owned and ridden, Honda makes by far the best. Just my $.02.

I've ridden an 80s era Magna, and owned 2 Honda inline 4s. Do yourself a favor and check out a Harley Demo day. Go with an open mind, that's how I always try to evaluate an unfamiliar bike. Try the Fat Bob with the 114 engine. Or if your more into touring bikes, take an Ultra Limited out. The worse that can happen is you still won't like them. Also, Harley demo days usually have free food.
@wingmanalive
@wingmanalive 6 лет назад
"Free food". I'm there! On a side note the one thing I didn't like about my intruder was the cooling, there almost wasn't any. Because of the big V-twin it didn't make for a good commuter or city bike. It would overheat too easily and my clutch would fail. That meant 20 minutes on the side of the road. That and my pipes would discolor, like in my first 100 miles of riding. Water cooled bikes are great for that but more moving parts........ Anyway, I've ridden from 350 to 1400 and have found that you really don't need more than a 750 for a cruiser. It's a good middle ground for fuel economy and engine performance. Now, if you're 300 lbs and toting the misses at another 250 that's a different story.

Seen a lot of comments on Harley vs Japanese brands. Fact is Harley prices it's product to market where age 40 and above who are financially secure buy it as as a leisure ride. Honda and other Japanese brands have a wider product range that starts from 250 cc entry level to higher capacity bikes thanks appeal to a bigger market. In my country India, Enfield bullet is considered a modern classic, but Harley and other Japanese brands have made their presence in the smaller CC engines to grow the market. Being a motorcycle users myself, I personally own a Bajaj Avenger a small Cc Urban cruiser, an Enfield and my extended family owns old British motorcycles, I am not charmed by technology in motor vehicles. You cannot do roadside repair, parts are mostly replaced not repaired, and the vehicle is obsolete when software support for the control unit is stopped. That's why electrical and mechanical controls are better than electronic controls.

I'm sure you figured out by now that the transmission mode doesn't take effect until the mode name stops flashing. It's an instant change when you're are sitting still, but if you change the mode at speed, the transmission will look for a safe transition point and will let you know it is still working on the problem by flashing the mode change. As for the smaller tank, keep in mind that the engine went through a complete redesign for 2018 and is more efficient. Yes, the tank is a gallon smaller, but you're range is close to the same. I've owned three Harley's and two Indians and the 2018 Goldwing Tour DCT is, by far, the best thing I've ever ridden. If I ever choose to go back to a V-Twin, it would certainly be a heavyweight Indian. I would never go back to Harley. All three of my Harley's, two of which I bought new, were maintenance nightmares. One of my new Harley's simply went dark while accelerating into a busy intersection. It was like someone reached over and turned the ignition to Off. The central computer had fried. The bike, new, had about 250 miles on it.

The DCT is so smooth and it learns your habits over time too. Thanks again. Stay safe and Go Pats! I was a fan as a kid in the 70s when they were not good... I will always be a Pats fan.

Nodak81 Hardly. You must be new to GoldWings. The previous generations for over 20 years had more buttons. This newest generation GoldWing (2018) has been cleaned up and reduced in that area. Additionally everywhere else as well. A way more downsized technologically advanced motorcycle. A pure joy to experience.

Xin Shen Cars suck. This new GoldWing is far more fun to ride than a car. If you haven’t experienced it than why complain? Ride a naked bike without any technology. That’s fine too. But why complain.

I highly recommend getting out on one. Like the previous model Wing, it's more refined than the Vtwins and fast. Being that its in its first year of production,, I would presume that it will only get better. RSMF

If you think the Goldwing is fast you should try a sportsbike or a super naked. Regrettably riding Harley's doesn't give you any appreciation of what a motorcycle can do.
@ridingnewengland3192
@ridingnewengland3192 6 лет назад
You're presuming I've never owned anything else. I've owned and ridden 30k miles on two Liter bikes. I've ridden many other sport bikes dating back to an early 90s FZ all the way up to a 2017 R6, which I found to be slow for a sport bike. Speed is judged on the chassis that's delivering, it. This is a touring bike and built for taking 400lbs of humans and another 50 lbs of gear on the road for 1000 mile days. Think about doing 100mph in a Jeep then in a corvette, which 100 mph would feel faster. Ride safe.
@thehigh-octanetwenty-onehi5991
A sportbike or a super naked?! There are fast sportbikes and there are fast touring bikes. You're comparing apples and oranges. It's like saying, "If you think a Dodge Ram is fast, you should try a Mustang SVO."

No true, daily rider, long distance rider, finds thiis comparison even comparible. The harley is follow-the herd-only, 30 miles a weekend riding only....no true comparison in any realm of the game..price, nimbleness, speed, reliability. All a joke.

I just can't trust a bike with no clutch lever. I'm too used to having that safety net, and if anything happens to the engine I can pull in the clutch and try to lessen the damage to the motor (partial seizures or cam chain tensioner issues etc.) On a clutchless bike, ok, the ride with DCT might be super sweet, but no amount of computer controlled wizardry can tell it to pull in an internal release and stop the motor from locking up on you. I mean, how do you push the bike if it locks? At least with a clutch lever, you pull it in, and can (exhaustingly) push it forward onto a trailer or recovery. I'll stick to riding levered bikes, but would not say no to _just_ a test ride of the DCT for curiosity purposes. Regards. Dawg ( _*edited for spelling errors!_ )

I WANT the clutch and gears ... that's half of the experience of riding for me
@WhosAGoodDogue
@WhosAGoodDogue 6 лет назад
- I agree that I'd prefer my riding experience to include clutch and gears. That's all part of physically working the bike and making it do what _you_ want it to do. It's what makes riding a motorcycle sometimes exhausting work. After a hard ride, I can come home physically drained. Automatic bikes are not a new idea, and I guess they will appeal to certain folk. At the end of the day, it's a giant twist n' go, but I'd never put anyone down who chooses to ride one - it's their choice, and the main thing is they are still riding on 2 wheels. My attitude towards the DCT with all the whistles and bells and spaceship dash is that, ''the more things it has, then the more can go wrong with it''. - But that's my paranoid old fashioned mechanical head ruling. I like to be able to fix stuff at the side of the road if possible. Imagine touring thousands of miles on this DCT, and it breaks down with a clutch issue? Who can fix it? Where do you go? As well as being an expensive recovery job! With a manual 'olde farty' clutch, you can either change a cable, re-solder a nipple, or take it to ANY bike shop and effect a repair. You can still ride a manual motorcycle through the gears without a clutch lever or a broken cable (just using the gear lever). Is there a ''disengage transmission'' on this DCT that allows you to at least freewheel the machine to allow being towed?
@MrDickBills
@MrDickBills 6 лет назад
I have a 1 litre Honda for a while now, and I have not yet had to rely on the clutch lever to do anything other than be a clutch. Maybe I have been lucky. My other half has an automatic 125. When the engine is off it is just in free wheels. Looks to me that you have found a serious problem that you will never encounter. Riding a bike is about the most dangerous activity there is. Worrying about stuff like this is pointless. How many motorcyclists are killed by automatic clutches, and how many are killed by cars pulling out on them, or by just riding much too fast?
@WhosAGoodDogue
@WhosAGoodDogue 6 лет назад
- Hello! - Yes, the majority of bike riders just pull the clutch lever and that's all that matters...it works and does the job it's meant to do. But, there are genuinely a few folk out there that have piston siezures, lock ups, or cam chain failures on modern bikes (myself included...on an inline 4 bike, and an old twin). The clutch lever then is a god-send for pulling in quickly and minimising the internal engine damage. I hope that the DCT isn't a serious problem if things go wrong on the road. Yup, riding a bike (any size of bike) is potential suicide on a daily basis, and you take your life in your hands evertime you saddle up. A T-shirt I have says: _''Definition of a motorcyclist: A person who is willing to take a container of flammable liquid, place it on top of a hot engine, and then puts the lot between their legs''._ So, with that in mind, I guess you're right: worrying about a clutch failing is the least of our worries! Have a good weekend Mr Bills. Best. Dawg.

When I retire I will absolutely have a Goldwing to tour on. My last bike was a Honda ST1300...their true sport tourer. Brilliant bike. That said....I'm also a huge fan of the BMW K1600 GTL...basically BMW's version of a Goldwing. That said....the BMW has gobs more power...but a Wing is hard to beat for an all around ultra touring bike.

Ahh, a comment from the great HDR. I'm not switching bikes just yet, but you could do a lot worse than this Wing. Ride safe buddy.

Using the "miles to empty" feature I calculated a range of just about 230 miles, although this is slightly lower than the other bikes in its class the difference is minimal. It absolutely wouldn't be a deal killer for me. I get between 240 and 290 on my Ultra, depending on how I ride it. I doubt 2 extra gas stops a month would be a problem. Ride safe.

I thought the same way, too, but it's actually quite convenient and nice, and I would totally spring for it on a commuter bike if I could also still have a fun, sportier bike for the mountain roads and such. If I only get to have one bike though (as I currently do with my financial situation), manual it shall remain.

It seems like you would have familiarized yourself more with the bike before taking it out! Even I know where most of the controls are and how to use them! Kudos to the dealership for letting you test drive one. Our Tucson dealer salesman told my wife "don't touch that!" At which time she walked out! I still haven't found a dealer that will let me drive one. News flash! A Honda, built in Ohio, has more American parts (100%) than a Harley Davidson! This I know from working for the Japanese company (sunstar) who made their brakes until '07.
@ridingnewengland3192
@ridingnewengland3192 4 года назад
Given the number of different bikes I've ridden over the years, most of the basic controls were pretty self explanatory. Although I still don't know why it was beeping at me. I hope all those in New England who are interested in this bike appreciate what the dealership did and will go to Naults for all of their motorsports needs. They were extremely accommodating and when I actually purchased an item they were great to work with. Also, I'm almost certain the Honda plant in Ohio has been closed since 2009. Thanks for watching.
